A brief history of AI executives calling for regulation

16 September 2026 at 13:00
H.A.L.-style glowing red digital eye over a textured digital backdrop.

Over the past few days, a lot of people who stand to make a lot of money from AI all publicly agreed that it's time to make everyone slow down before we lose control - including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind cofounder Demis Hassabis, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and X CEO Elon Musk.

When people who profit from something declare that it's dangerous and needs to be regulated, there's always reason to be skeptical. But whatever their reason, this is far from the first time AI thought leaders have sounded the alarm.

Charles Darwin's theory of evolution prompted author Samuel Butler to warn about intelligen …

Nintendo opens up Fire Emblem with the gigantic Fortune’s Weave

16 September 2026 at 13:00

Nintendo has gotten quite good at making open-ended games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild upended the idea of what a Zelda game could be by giving the player free rein to tackle any part of the map, a philosophy iterated upon with Tears of the Kingdom. On the Switch 2 this idea expanded to Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. Now, Nintendo has brought this philosophy to Fire Emblem with Fortune's Weave. It works really well; with its many ways to progress through the game and tailor teams to your liking, Fortune's Weave has become my favorite game on the Switch 2 so far.

Fortune's Weave's structure is a big reason why it feels …

The iPhone 18 Pro’s big camera update is all about the small gains

Last week, Apple announced an iPhone unlike any it has made in the past. An iPhone that has seemingly already led several other phone manufacturers to pursue entirely different designs for their flagship products. A remarkably distinct device with the kind of "I can't believe they did that" software touches that Apple sometimes pulls off when it's at the top of its game.

That phone is not the iPhone 18 Pro.

The 18 Pro and Pro Max are in the unusual position of being the second-most interesting iPhones that Apple is launching this year. The foldable iPhone Duo stole the show at Apple's launch event, but it's not arriving until next month. …

Meta is reportedly ready to launch less pervy smart glasses

16 September 2026 at 09:54
And illustration of Meta smart glasses recording a couple arguing

Meta may be ready to reveal a new pair of smart glasses with no camera at all, amid a PR crisis for the company caused by the video recording capabilities of its flagship smart glasses. A new report from The Information claims the camera-free glasses, codenamed Luna, could be revealed as soon as the Meta Connect event next week.

Instead of a camera, the Luna glasses will reportedly include six microphones that allow users to chat to Meta AI and the new Muse AI agent, along with speakers for audio playback. Stripping the camera out has apparently made it possible to make the glasses' arms smaller, and closer to ordinary frames. Meta is repor …

The Boox Palma 3 gets stylus support and a sleek redesign

16 September 2026 at 03:00
Two Boox Palma 3 e-readers side by side showing off the front and back of the devices.

Nearly two years after the last update to Boox's smartphone-sized black-and-white e-reader, the company announced the Palma 3 with a sleek redesign, new functionality, and a handful of other small updates that may justify its significant price bump depending on how you plan to use it. While the Palma 2 launched in 2024 for $279.99, the Palma 3 will be $339.99 and is expected to be "available soon."

The most obvious upgrade for the Palma 3 is the hardware itself. It still features the same 6.13-inch, 300ppi E Ink Carta screen as its predecessor (which is now quite a few years old), but it's wrapped in a new anodized aluminum frame with a pap …

The EOS R8 Mark II is Canon’s lightest full-frame camera with stabilization

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II with a lens attached against a green background.

Canon announced the second-generation of its EOS R8 with a new retro-inspired redesign and the addition of in-body stabilization. That feature was one of the most notable omissions from the original R8 that launched in 2023 as a smaller, cheaper, and more accessible alternative to the Canon R6 Mark II for photographers wanting a larger full-frame shooter. While the new EOS R8 Mark II is slightly heavier than its predecessor at 1.2 pounds thanks to the additional stabilization functionality, it's lighter and cheaper than last year's EOS R6 Mark III.

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II is expected to be available sometime in late October for $1,899 for …

AI and data centers are incredibly unpopular in every poll

16 September 2026 at 00:34
Graphic image of a data center.

Poll data released Tuesday by The New York Times and Siena University confirms what we've already been seeing, and what politicians are responding to - AI and data centers are incredibly unpopular. Asked if they support or oppose the construction of data centers to power AI tech, 61 percent of the 1,503 likely voters surveyed in early September (ahead of the recent AI safety slowdown discussion) said they were opposed, with only 14 percent saying they strongly support. The split was about even among 2024 Donald Trump voters, at 49 percent support to 45 percent oppose, while people who had voted for Kamala Harris or who didn't vote leaned opp …

Microsoft announces Windows and Surface event for October 7th

Windows logo on black background

It's been more than two years since the last major Windows event, so Microsoft is heading to San Francisco next month to outline the future of Windows and Surface devices. At an event on October 7th, the company says it will host a "conversation on how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will be in attendance, alongside Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri. Even Nvidia CEO Jensen Huangβ€―will be appearing at the event, which suggests that RTX Spark PCs could be the main focus of this event. If that's the case, don't be surprised to hear more about the Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra pricing and avai …

What if social media isn’t hurting kids?

15 September 2026 at 21:13
Child using social media on a cell phone on a graphic green background.

Two years ago, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt released his New York Times bestseller The Anxious Generation. The book posits that the rise of social media and smartphone use is largely to blame for the prominent decline in teen mental health since 2010. It quickly became a central rallying cry of the social media backlash. Haidt has been credited with helping inspire Australia's nationwide teen social media ban. He has joined forces with bereaved parents who are fighting tech companies in court. His name comes up unprompted in conversations with people in power who say his book opened their eyes to an online crisis.

Haidt's theory has …

Kia’s electric van lineup is getting more interesting with reveal of PV7

15 September 2026 at 19:39
Kia PV7 electric van

You may not know it, but minivans are making a comeback in the US. Look around, and you'll start to notice an uptick in these breadboxes on wheels. Sales were up 21 percent in 2025, suggesting that the humble minivan is shaking off its "uncool" stigma and finding new fans among an SUV-weary public. I'm here for it.

One of the companies currently carrying the torch for minivans is Kia, which has sold its popular Carnival minivan here since 2021. Kia is also one of the few automakers making all-electric vans. This week, the Korean automaker rolled out its new PV7 at IAA Transportation in Germany. This is the second electric van from Kia's Pla …

Insta360 launches a single-lens Osmo Pocket rival you can actually buy in the US

11 September 2026 at 12:07
I saw the Luna Pro briefly at the IFA trade show, and it looks and feels a lot like the Ultra. | Photo: Dominic Preston / The Verge

Insta360's first compact steadicam, the Luna Ultra, made a splash this year by beating DJI to launch with two lenses. Now it's followed the Ultra with a slightly stripped back Pro model, which drops to one lens but has a unique advantage: it can shoot vertical video in 4K. Plus, unlike DJI's Osmo Pocket 4, you can buy it in the US.

At its heart, the Luna Pro is mostly an Ultra with the telephoto lens stripped out. It uses the same 1-inch-type 8K sensor as the Ultra's main camera, has a similar design including the detachable 2-inch touchscreen that doubles as a remote, and the same four-hour battery life and NFC tag for quicker file transfe …

Apple addresses iPhone Duo copycats

Apple was far from the first company to announce a passport-shaped folding phone this year, but that doesn't mean it wasn't copied. As my colleague Dom Preston already explained, it's almost impossible to keep product development secret when Apple and its competitors all share the same global suppliers.

Apple's new CEO John Ternus and head of marketing Greg 'Joz' Joswiak addressed the topic during an interview with TechRadar's Lance Ulanoff and Mark Spoonauer of Tom's Guide.

"People knew through leaks that we were working on a foldable," said Joz. "Unfortunately, they got the aspect ratio, and a lot of coincidental instances of people fin …

Slack can now vibe-code interactive charts and reports inside chats

An image of Slack Surfaces

A new feature coming to Slack will allow you to build interactive reports, polls, dashboards, presentations, microsites, and other tools directly inside a chat. With Slackforce Surfaces, you can describe to Slackbot what you need, and it will use AI to gather information from relevant conversations and connected apps, like Google Drive or Salesforce, to create it.

Once Slackbot creates a Surface, you can share it with colleagues and pin it to channels, allowing other people to view it, interact with it, and leave comments. In one example shared by Slack, a user asks Slackbot for help creating an arcade-themed visualization of AI token usage …

Schools are catching on to Big Tech’s playbook

10 September 2026 at 20:44
laptop with an apple on a stack of books

It's the hot new thing in tech, and it's where all the jobs are. Students who don't learn to use it fall behind. And to help them catch up in time, its creators are graciously providing the resources and curriculum for learning it, often pro bono.

That's the narrative AI companies are pitching schools on right now, but according to New York Times education technology reporter Natasha Singer, it's also how the tech industry has built its influence in classrooms for the past 15 years.

In a new book, Coding Kids, Singer details how tech companies took a central role in promoting computers and coding skills in education, promising computer sci …

While this is the 2023 model, it’s functionally identical (and also has the same specs) to the current Fire TV Stick 4K Plus that costs considerably more. Electric air taxis get the green light for test flights in Texas

10 September 2026 at 17:00
Joby Aviation

A new federal program to test the feasibility of electric, hybrid-electric, and autonomous aircraft kicks off today in Texas - before the rules governing this new technology have even been finalized.

Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration's Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) selected eight state-led projects to serve as some of the first public tests of these new aircraft. The first one kicks off today in Texas, featuring three eVTOL companies: Joby, Beta, and Wisk.

Where to preorder the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4

10 September 2026 at 16:00

The iPhone Duo was the unequivocal star of Apple's "Surprise and shine" event, but not for people who were mostly paying attention for news on wearables. Thankfully, Apple had a lot to share about its new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. There's no update to the SE model for 2026, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (the SE 3 rules). Also, no price changes either, which can't be said for the entire iPhone lineup.

While both new watches look similar to their predecessors, there are a number of updates under the hood that might intrigue some people enough to warrant a preorder. My colleague Victoria Song got hands-on with both smartwatches …

Wolverine on the PS5 goes back to a simpler (and bloodier) style of action game

10 September 2026 at 16:00
A screenshot from the video game Wolverine.

Marvel's Wolverine captures just how angry its lead character is. The latest PS5 exclusive from Spider-Man developer Insomniac, Wolverine is a straightforward action game that is at its best when you're (literally) slicing through enemies or thrust into a sequence pulled from a blockbuster movie, like climbing the fuselage of a plane as it careens toward land or racing a motorcycle across rain-slicked city streets. It's the kind of game that can really get your heart rate rising, and keeping Logan mad is a key part of the strategy. In many ways, it's a throwback to straightforward action titles of the past - and it's a refreshing change of p …

Meta’s Muse AI works and creeps me out

Meta has launched its new Muse assistant, marking the company's first real foray into AI-powered productivity tools. The company says its AI agent can "take the busywork off your plate" by helping you with online shopping, emails, trip-planning, and more. I decided to try out the new tool and see how well it performed - especially from a company that previously prioritized entertainment over productivity. Though the AI assistant generally worked as I expected it to, the unnerving amount of information it autonomously gleaned about me largely overshadowed my experience.

One of the first tasks I assigned Muse, which carries out actions using …
