9 September 2026 at 20:16

Vulnerability giving attackers full control of Macs is under active exploitation

14 August 2026 at 19:32

Dutch officials have warned that a high-severity macOS vulnerability that allows attackers to execute malicious code is under active exploitation.

β€œThe NCSC has received a notification indicating that active abuse of this vulnerability has been observed on multiple systems on which port 5900 was accessible from the Internet,” the Netherlands National Cyber Security Centrum warned earlier this week. β€œIn all these cases, root had been accessed on the affected system and a Monero crypto miner had been placed.”

Do you know if your screen sharing is on?

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-65400, received a patch from Apple last week for macOS Tahoe, Sequoia, and Sonoma. The vulnerability, with a severity rating of 7.1 out of 10, stems from a bug in the macOS screen sharing capability, which allows a remote party to view the screen and control the keyboard and mouse while a machine is turned on. A flaw in the β€œstate management,” which keeps track of preceding events, user interactions, variables, and other system states, is the underlying cause.

Restoring a Macintosh Plus and Convincing It to Work With BlueSCSI

8 August 2026 at 17:12

Many more years ago than I care to admit, I took a C programming class in college. The computers in the university labs were all Macintosh Pluses, and nearly all of them had a single floppy drive. Back from the Low End Mac mailbag is a heavily customized Dual 800 Quicksilver G4, which looks like a custom B&W G3 on the outside. This community member also swapped out or modified some of the plastic pieces up front, added a gauge cluster, made the colors match, and threw in some upgrades. They write: […]

20 years of Intel Macs: Why Apple switched, and why it switched again

15 June 2026 at 17:32

The release of macOS 27 later this fall won't quite close the book on the Intel Mac. The last handful of models that could run macOS 26 Tahoe will be eligible for security and Safari updates for two more years, and elements of the Rosetta compatibility layer for running Intel code on Apple Silicon Macs will be with us in some form for some indeterminate amount of time after that.

But macOS 26 is definitely the last chapter of the Intel Mac story. Anything that happens after this is a coda or an epilogue.

Most of our WWDC coverage has been forward-looking, so indulge us if you will in a look backward at the full history of the Intel Mac, a partnership between two companies that made Macs dramatically better, until it started making them worse.
