Além de Scott Thomas e Oldman, o elenco inclui Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, Samuel West, Ruth Bradley, Hugo Weaving, Lenny Rush, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, James Callis, Tom Brooke, Jonathan Pryce e Olivia Cooke.

Mirror publisher to cut 220 editorial jobs as readers turn to AI summaries

Reach, which also owns Express, makes decision because of ‘mammoth shift’ in how audiences seek out content

The publisher of the Mirror and Express newspapers is to cut a further 220 editorial jobs as it adapts to a dramatic fall in online traffic while readers increasingly turn to summaries generated by artificial intelligence.

Reach, which also owns scores of online brands and regional titles including the Manchester Evening News, the Birmingham Mail and the Liverpool Echo, said the latest cuts were necessary to cope with a “mammoth shift” in how audiences seek out content.

Update do Steady

We just released a very nice update across all platforms. The new version is ready for OS 27, features support for Siri AI, and introduces a fully customizable toolbar on macOS.

The update is available now. You can find the release notes on our website.https://t.co/TO7PFbVjGt

— Ulysses Help (@ulyssesapp) September 15, 2026

Apple TV renews award-winning spy drama ‘Slow Horses’ for eighth season

Apple TV announces an eighth season of the Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning spy drama “Slow Horses,” starring Academy Award winner Sir Gary Oldman.
Apple TV announces an eighth season of the Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning spy drama “Slow Horses,” starring Academy Award winner Sir Gary Oldman.

Apple TV announced a season eight for Emmy- and BAFTA Award-winning, darkly comedic spy drama “Slow Horses.” The six-episode eighth season is adapted from “Clown Town,” the ninth novel in Mick Herron’s “Slough House” book series, and stars Academy Award winner Sir Gary Oldman, who has been honored with Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA Award nominations for his outstanding performance as the beloved, irascible Jackson Lamb. The complete first five seasons of “Slow Horses” are now streaming on Apple TV, with the premiere of season six slated for September 16, 2026, and season seven announced last year.

“‘Slow Horses’ continues to charm audiences all around the world and I’m delighted that Jackson Lamb and his gang of lovable misfits will be back for an eighth season,” said Jay Hunt, creative director, International, Apple TV. “Their acerbic take on the high-octane world of espionage is completely unique.”

“Slow Horses” has been hailed as “one of the best, if not the best, series on TV,” a “gripping spy drama” that delivers a “story that is a masterful balance of tension, intelligence and a character-driven narrative.” With its “layered intrigue, relentless pacing and satirical tone,” the “standout” series features “stellar performances, a tight screenplay and its signature dark humor.” All five seasons of the “infinitely watchable,” “thrilling” and “riveting” series hold a Certified Fresh score, with two seasons receiving a rare, perfect 100% critics’ score, and season four hailed as the number one series of 2024 on Rotten Tomatoes. “Slow Horses” has won three Emmy Awards, including two for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and one for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, alongside five BAFTA Television Awards, including Writer, Drama and two consecutive wins each for Editing, Fiction and Sound, Fiction, as the series continues to receive global accolades from critics and fans alike.

Season eight sees Jackson Lamb and Diana Taverner face off in their most explosive confrontation yet. When a botched attempt to blackmail the Park puts Taverner on the offensive, it is up to Lamb to unravel one of MI5’s darkest secrets and put an end to it once and for all.

“Slow Horses” is a darkly humorous espionage drama that follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House. Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but cantankerous leader of the spies, who end up in Slough House due to their career-ending mistakes and who frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world.

The series is produced for Apple TV by See-Saw Films, with Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Douglas Urbanski, Adam Randall, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Gail Mutrux, Billy Bowring, Helen Gregory, Mick Herron and Oldman serving as executive producers. Season eight is adapted for television and executive produced by Ben Vanstone, with Randall set to return as director. See-Saw Films is part of the Mediawan group.

Apple TV offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment, and is available to watch across all of a user’s favorite screens. After its launch on 1 November, 2019, Apple TV became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world, and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service in its debut. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have been honored with 917 wins and 3,827 award nominations and counting, including multi-Emmy Award-winning and history-making comedies “The Studio” and “Ted Lasso,” global cultural phenomenon “Severance,” Apple’s most-viewed drama “Pluribus,” Academy Award Best Picture winner “CODA” and Academy Award winner “F1,” the highest-grossing sports feature of all time.

MacDailyNews Take: Richly deserved! If you haven’t yet watched “Slow Horses,” you’re in for a treat. The season one finale is positively amazing and you’ll be ready to go from there for seven more seasons and countig!

MacDailyNews Note: Apple TV is available on the Apple TV app in over 100 countries and regions, on over 1 billion screens, including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV 4K, Apple Vision Pro, Mac, popular smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, VIZIO, TCL and others, Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation and Xbox gaming consoles, and at tv.apple.com, for $14.99 per month with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers. It’s almost time to airdrop rabies vaccines again

Despite major strides in education and conservation efforts, rabies remains a serious public health issue. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates around 90 percent of cases occur in wildlife, but their consequences still reverberate across ecosystems and routinely endanger humans. Combating the viral disease costs the United States over $300 million every year, but the hefty price tag is justified. Contracting one of the oldest known diseases invariably causes severe symptoms like abnormal sensations, violent movements, hydrophobia, and loss of consciousness. Rabies is fatal in virtually every documented case, and still kills around 59,000 people around the world each year.

Once primarily associated with dogs, rabies has since spread to wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes—making the issue much more difficult to track and control. Since 1995, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has overseen a National Rabies Management Program in cooperation with state and federal departments, university researchers, and other organizations. After over 30 years of work, one of the most preferred mitigation methods is regularly placing oral rabies vaccine (ORV) bait in strategically selected wildlife areas. The easiest way to spread millions of bait blocks across thousands of square miles? Airdrops.

The bait isn’t toxic, but the USDA recommends using gloves to handle it. Credit: USDA

Next month, the USDA will once again begin tossing fishmeal-coated ORV packets from planes throughout the Southeastern states of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. These tiny edibles are specifically crafted to target the most prominent rabies variants seen in raccoons, coyotes, and gray foxes.

“The goal is to prevent westward spread of raccoon rabies by creating a continuous vaccine barrier that stays in front of rabies occurrence on the landscape,” a USDA spokesperson recently told FOX Carolina News. The representative added that although the distribution’s scope doesn’t currently include South Carolina, they are “very close to establishing an ORV area in South Carolina counties bordering North Carolina and Georgia in the next few years.”

If all goes as planned, the National Rabies Management Program’s geographic scope will shrink over time as the disease is regionally eliminated. Until then, anyone who accidentally comes into contact with an ORV bait brick shouldn’t worry about contracting the disease. The vaccine inside each brick is proven safe for over 60 animal species, including cats and dogs. If you happen to locate one in a residential area, the USDA recommends to either simply leave it alone, or use gloves to move it to a more remote location for its intended recipients. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling ORV bait—and try to ignore the pungent odor of fishmeal.

Additionally, “Widow’s Bay” breaks records with the most Emmy wins for performances out of any other series this year, as director and executive producer Hiro Murai becomes the first Asian ever to win in the comedy directing category.

“Reaching milestones like these feels incredibly special for all of us at Apple, but what makes it especially meaningful is what it represents: the extraordinary storytellers we have the privilege of working alongside,” said Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming, in a statement. “There is nothing like the power of a great story to capture our imaginations, surprise us in unexpected ways, and remind us of what connects us. Widow’s Bay, Pluribus, and Slow Horses have done exactly that. Congratulations to all of the artists honored and thank you to the Television Academy.”

PostgreSQL 19 graph queries fail the 'would you ship this?' test

PostgreSQL developers have pulled planned graph query support from version 19 over concerns that unresolved bugs could haunt the release. The feature, SQL Property Graph Queries (SQL/PGQ), became part of the SQL standard in 2023. It provides syntax for exploring relationships between nodes connected by edges. PostgreSQL's implementation was removed over unresolved issues, while version 19's release date remains unconfirmed. A fourth beta is scheduled for September 24. Longtime PostgreSQL contributor Tom Lane warned: "At this point I'd be willing to bet dinner that if we ship it in v19 there will be post-release bug discoveries that are unfixable until v20." Tom Kincaid, senior vice president of software engineering at PostgreSQL support and development company EDB, confirmed that PGQ will not be part of PostgreSQL 19. "The community wanted to work through a few more things before releasing it," he said. Database administrators still have something to look forward to, though: reclaiming disk space without shutting everyone out of a table for the duration. VACUUM FULL rewrites a table to reclaim space occupied by obsolete row versions and return it to the operating system. It holds an exclusive table lock throughout, blocking other reads and writes. Kincaid told The Register that the resulting interruption makes administrators reluctant to run it. "Middle-of-the-night calls have been a result of somebody doing a VACUUM FULL, and their customers can't get access to the data or someone wants to know why this is running," he said. The new REPACK command offers a CONCURRENTLY option that lets other transactions access the table during most of the operation. It still needs an exclusive lock when swapping the rewritten table and index files into place, but that lock is typically held only briefly. Ordinary REPACK holds the exclusive lock throughout. For admins hoping to avoid another midnight call, CONCURRENTLY is the important part. ®

Oracle celebrates banner quarter with another round of layoffs

Oracle posted record revenue during its latest quarter, but that hasn't stopped the company from chopping more employees. Reports began appearing on social media early Monday that staff were having trouble accessing corporate systems such as email and Slack, which essentially served as a sign that they had lost their jobs. According to a number of now-ex Oracle employees posting in a LinkedIn thread, layoff emails weren’t sent to personal email addresses, leaving a good number of people unsure what was happening outside of calls to supervisors, prior heads-up that they were on the chopping block, and the like. It seems some employees did manage to access their accounts and view the layoff email, as a copy was shared with Business Insider, which published it in its coverage of this latest round of job cuts. “After careful consideration of Oracle's current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change,” the email read. “As a result, today is your last working day.” While the message didn’t indicate what sort of severance agreement Oracle was offering those whose jobs were cut, other reports indicate that those caught up in the layoffs were being offered four weeks of pay, plus an additional week for each year of employment. Some of those who claimed on LinkedIn they were part of the layoffs had been at Oracle for 20 years. Oracle has been undertaking a large-scale restructuring of its workforce and business over the past year, with some 21,000 jobs vanishing amid efforts to adjust the company’s trajectory to align with its new AI datacenter buildout mission. It’s not clear how many employees were laid off as part of this latest wave of cuts, but it could be a lot based on Oracle’s accounting. Oracle’s latest quarterly SEC filing, submitted to the federal government at the end of last week, indicates it’s increasing its restructuring budget for 2026 by an additional $700 million. Prior to the end of the quarter, Oracle’s 2026 restructuring plan was expected to cost up to $2.1 billion, primarily due to employee severance, contract termination costs, and other exit expenses, the filing indicated. That’s a fraction of Oracle’s $19.3 billion in revenue in Q1 FY27, ended August 31. Oracle also reported $4.76 billion in net income. Revenue was up about 30 percent year over year. In other words, Oracle’s big bet on AI infrastructure investments has started paying off for it. As is often the case when such investments start paying dividends, the employees who helped make that possible end up being cast into the wind. Oracle didn’t respond to questions for this story. ®
