Forget Prime Day right now — all of my favorite Dell laptops are even cheaper directly from Dell, including $499.99 for a Ryzen 7

The refreshed lineup of Dell laptops has turned out to be even better than many of us hoped for, including the return of the XPS line — and right now, Dell's 'Days of Deals' sale is offering even better pricing than the Amazon Prime Day laptop deals I've been seeing.

Right off the top, you have the new Dell 16 Laptop for $499.99 (originally $1029.99), which is a better price for a Windows 11 Home laptop than just about any other model on Amazon that doesn't come with junk hardware inside. Instead, you get an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 250 processor, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD, far better than most sub-$500 laptops on sale for Prime Day.

The Alienware 15 gaming laptop is also just $999.99 for a decently specced sub-$1,000 laptop with updated hardware, something that is very hard to find on Amazon right now.

There's more to explore at Dell.com, and I encourage you to check out their sale if you're in the market for new computer hardware, but I've pulled together my favorite laptop picks and configurations from the sale to help make it easier to find what you're looking for.

Amazon's Prime Day sale in the US - quick links

I'm using the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake as an excuse to deck out my gaming station with the best Nintendo Switch 2 Lego, accessories and merch — here are my top picks as a super-fan

My love of all things Zelda is no secret to my colleagues, friends, and family. In fact, when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (OoT) remake was first announced, our Global Editor-in-Chief, Marc McLaren, immediately messaged me to ask if I intended to take time off to play it (I do).

When the 40th anniversary of the franchise rolled around earlier this year, I was a little blue to see little-to-no news of a new game or remake, but my long-read ode to the lasting impact of Link's adventures through Hyrule at least gave me a distraction. Now, however, with months to go until I finally make my grand return to the Kokiri forest, my hype has reached new heights.

To pass the time, I plan to spend my money on, you guessed it, even more Zelda merchandise and Switch 2 accessories to accommodate my upcoming increase in playtime. In the current Amazon Prime Day deals, there's a wide selection of cases, storage, merchandise, and more to shop; I've included some of the best below, as well as the essential gear my gaming station will be decked with come OoT's release later this year. Not everything I've linked below is on sale, so look for the percentage-off badge if you're only looking for good deals.

Laptop prices suck these days, but here are 25 Prime Day deals that help a little

A rear-view of the 15-inch MacBook Air M5.

The RAM, storage, and component crunch has come for new laptop prices. Plenty of models have gone up in price after being on the market for months, and so have those that’ve been on shelves for over a year. Plus, many new models are releasing at higher prices than the previous generation. So, it really isn’t the best time to buy a new laptop. But what if you need one or really want one now, and you prefer to shop new?

Well, I’m not here to tell you that Amazon’s Prime Day makes everything better. But the discounts certainly don’t hurt.

As usual, we’re doing our best to surface the best Prime Day tech deals. And here, we’ve pulled together the biggest discounts happening not just on laptops, but also on keyboards, mice, webcams, or other worthwhile PC accessories. And since Prime Day has counter-deals running at other retailers like Best Buy (and its Tech Fest Sale), there are also laptop deals for non-Amazon shoppers alike.

The best deals on MacBooks

  • The days of multi-hundred-dollar discounts on MacBooks are behind us for now, but the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 chip for $1,549 ($150 off) at Amazon and Best Buy is still a solid deal. It’s powerful enough for the average content creator, comes with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and has lots of ports. Read our review.

Apple MacBook Air (M5)

Apple’s 2026 MacBook Air has an M5 chip and starts with 512GB of storage that’s significantly faster than previous generations. It’s still as excellent as ever despite a higher base price. Read our review.

Where to Buy:

  • The 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip (15-core CPU / 16-core GPU), 24GB of memory, and 1TB of storage is $2,034 (around $165 off) at Amazon and $2,049 at Best Buy. It’s a pretty nice step-up model from the standard M5 MacBook Pro, with a bit more RAM, a more powerful chip, and faster Thunderbolt 5 ports.

The best deals on Windows laptops

Microsoft Surface Laptop, 13-inch

Microsoft’s slightly smaller, entry-level Surface Laptop trims some of the size and a few features from its bigger 13.8-inch counterpart, but it maintains excellent battery life and solid performance. It’s just a shame it’s price went up. Read our review.

Where to Buy:

Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch

Microsoft’s latest Surface Pro is smaller, with a new design and updated keyboard. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Arm64 Snapdragon X Plus chip. Read our review.

Where to Buy:

  • The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x was one of the laptops I tested against the MacBook Neo and… it got smoked. But a 512GB config for $449 ($251 off) at Walmart? Not bad. The speakers are an assault on your ears and the trackpad ain’t great, but if you can live with those shortcomings, you get a decent laptop with a competent Snapdragon X processor and marathon battery life. Just read our review and be aware of its shortcomings.
  • Like the Lenovo above, the Acer Aspire 14 AI is another MacBook Neo contender I tested that’s on sale. It’s $589.99 (about $288 off) at Amazon, exclusively for Prime members. Best Buy has it for anyone, sold via Acer, for $599.99. Let me set your expectations: The screen on this laptop is pretty washed out, the speakers are tinny, and the build quality feels cheap. But what you’re getting a deal on is a great Intel Core Ultra 7 256V “Lunar Lake” processor that’s a solid performer while also being quite power efficient. It also has plenty of ports (including Thunderbolt 4) and can even do some light gaming.
  • For a higher-end Acer offering, the Swift X 14 AI is selling for a new low of $1,559.99 ($140 off) at Amazon for Prime members. The 14-inch laptop has a 2880 x 1800 / 120Hz OLED, AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 CPU, RTX 5060 discreet graphics, 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD. It even has a haptic trackpad that should be a nice upgrade over Acer’s mechanical ones that can be a bit basic.

Asus Zenbook A14

Asus’s Zenbook A14 is a bit of a MacBook Air wannabe, but it’s a compelling alternative if you value a superlight Windows laptop with long battery life. The last-gen 2025 model sports an Arm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus chip, a nice 14-inch OLED display, and a sleek textured beige finish.

Where to Buy:

The best deals on gaming laptops

2025 Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

Asus’ ROG Zephyrus G14 is the go-to choice for a portable gaming machine that’s great at regular laptop duties. It’s got a lovely OLED display, great keyboard and trackpad, and solid battery life. There’s a new Intel model that’s much pricier, but the 2025 version with AMD chips is still a great choice.

Where to Buy:

  • The 2025 Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is $1,574.99 ($575 off) at Best Buy. The larger version of the Zephyrus twins sports a 240Hz OLED display and a thin profile to make it travel friendly. This configuration includes an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H CPU, RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD.
  • HP’s Omen 16 gaming laptop from last year is $1,619.99 ($600 off) at Best Buy through a third-party seller. The 16-inch laptop is configured with an AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX processor, RTX 5060 graphics, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD. Not bad for around $1,500, but while its screen’s 144Hz refresh is nice, the resolution is only 1920 x 1200.
  • For a little more money, you can get a Lenovo Legion 5i at Walmart for $1,589 ($261 off). This 15-inch Legion has an Intel Core i9 14900HX CPU, RTX 5070 GPU (the 8GB VRAM version), 16GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD. You’re getting less RAM than the HP Omen deal, but in exchange it’s got a better GPU and 2560 x 1600 OLED display with 165Hz refresh rate.

Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI (2025)

An affordable mid-ranger from Acer running RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti graphics, a 16-inch 240Hz display, and lots of ports.

Where to Buy:

  • Acer’s Nitro V 16S AI gaming laptop is selling for $1,099.99 ($300 off) at Amazon, exclusively for Prime members. It’s got an AMD Ryzen 7 260 CPU, RTX 5060 GPU, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD. The specs are close to the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 deal above, but it’s much chunkier, has more RAM, and its display is larger but a lower-res LCD.

The best deals on keyboards, mice, and other PC peripherals

  • Moft has a variety of deals on its origami-style cases and stands. You can get its folding 2-in-1 Laptop Carry Sleeve, a sleek laptop case that doubles as a portable stand, for $51.96 ($13 off) at Amazon in four sizes and up to 11 different colors. Or, if you don’t mind some adhesive, the Moft Laptop Stand in select colors is $19.99 ($5 off) at Amazon. The super thin attachment sticks to the bottom of your laptop to give you a fold-out stand anywhere you go.

Logitech MX Master 3S

The MX Master 3S is a favorite among many Verge staff members because of its comfort and customization. It can connect via Bluetooth, via its included 2.4GHz receiver, or wired with its USB-C cable.

Where to Buy:

  • The fairly new Keychron V5 Ultra mechanical keyboard with Silk POM red linear switches is $107.99 ($12 off) at Amazon. The near-full-size 96-percent layout board has an incredibly long battery life thanks to its ZMK-based firmware, and it supports a fast 8,000Hz polling rate via its 2.4GHz wireless connection. Its plastic case isn’t as nice as ones with a metal chassis, but it’s a great no-nonsense keyboard for the money. Read our review.
  • Ugreen’s Dock and Stand for the Mac Mini M4 / M4 Pro is $49.99 ($40 off) at Amazon, exclusively for Prime members. The dock sits below your Mac Mini and plugs in to a rear USB-C port, dramatically expanding the port offerings of your tiny desktop and making your power button more accessible with a tiny lever. It has SD / microSD card slots and two USB-A ports on the front, and three USB-C and three USB-A ports on the rear. Plus, inside is an M.2 SSD slot for extra built-in storage. (You’ll have to BYO SSD.)
  • LG’s 32-inch UltraGear 32GX850A-B OLED gaming monitor is $684.50 ($600 off MSRP) at Amazon, exclusively for Prime members. LG also has it for anyone for a slightly higher $699.99. The dual mode 4K OLED supports a fairly high 165Hz refresh rate but can dip down to 1920 x 1080 resolution to output a super fast 330Hz for specialized uses like competitive gaming.
  • For a much more affordable and down to Earth OLED, check out the 27-inch Acer Predator Gaming Monitor X27U, selling for $314.99 ($235 off) at Amazon, exclusively for Prime members. It’s a sweet spot of 2560 x 1440 resolution that isn’t as demanding on games while supporting a high 240Hz refresh.

Elgato Stream Deck MK. 2

The MK.2 version of the standard Stream Deck comes with 15 programmable buttons, a swappable faceplate, and a detachable stand.

Where to Buy:

Asus ROG Falcata

A unique Hall effect gaming keyboard that actually takes ergonomics into account. Read our review.

Where to Buy:

8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard (Xbox Edition)

Philips Hue’s smart lights are getting a connectivity upgrade

Hue’s latest smart bulbs will be able to run Zigbee and Thread concurrently. | Photo by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy / The Verge

Philips Hue has announced a connectivity upgrade for its Matter-over-Thread-enabled smart bulbs that will allow them to run both Thread and Zigbee at the same time. The change means you can connect compatible Hue bulbs and fixtures directly to a Matter ecosystem - Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home - while keeping them linked to a Hue Bridge and the Hue ecosystem.

"Today you cannot have Zigbee and Thread running at the same time, so when you commission it, you have to choose," Philips Hue CTO George Yianni told The Verge. "If you want to then later switch, you have to reset it."

The same is true of dual-protocol products from compan …

We got a sneak peek of the final space shuttle set to go on public display

24 June 2026 at 15:04

There are some sights in this world that no photograph can truly capture.

Think of the rolling ribbons of the aurora in the northern and southern skies, the depth and breadth of the Grand Canyon, or the sense of immersion when diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Astronauts will tell you that not even large-format cameras can truly capture the blackness of outer space or the majesty that is our planet as seen from orbit or beyond.

It's not every day that a new one of those sights debuts. But such will be the case on Friday, November 13, when the California Science Center in Los Angeles finally reveals the launch-pad-like display of the space shuttle Endeavor inside the new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.

SAVE $490: As of June 24, the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2025) is down to $2,099.99 at Amazon. That’s $490.01 off a high-end gaming laptop built for serious gaming and heavy workloads.

$2,590 Save $490.01

Prime Day is officially here, and if you've been waiting for the right moment to upgrade your gaming laptop, this might be it. Amazon has cut the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2025) to $2,099.99, knocking nearly $500 off the regular price and bringing the high-performance gaming laptop down to its lowest price this year.

This is a high-end gaming laptop built for people who want serious speed without waiting around for things to load. It runs on Intel’s Core Ultra 9 processor paired with NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti graphics, which basically means it can handle demanding games, creative work, and heavy multitasking without slowing down. You also get 32GB of memory and a 1TB solid-state drive, so apps open quickly, and there’s plenty of space for a full game library.

On the experience side, the 16-inch display is designed for fast, smooth gameplay, which helps keep motion clear in fast-moving games. It also has an advanced cooling system designed to maintain steady performance during long gaming sessions instead of throttling under pressure.

The RGB lighting is mostly for looks and customization, but you can switch it off or tone it down if you want a more simple, work-friendly setup.

Grab the ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2025) on Amazon before your laptop starts charging emotional damage fees.

With GTA 6 closer than ever, these are all the other Grand Theft Auto games you can play before it arrives

With Grand Theft Auto 6 dropping in November, time is running out if you want to play the previous games in the series before diving in. If you own a modern console, there aren't that many to catch up on, as only a few of the older ones have been ported.

Still, you can play through the whole of Grand Theft Auto 5, the previous entry, and dive into Grand Theft Auto Online, which has its own narrative content and is included free of charge. They're not the most accomplished remasters on the planet, but given that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which shares a setting with the upcoming GTA 6, I would consider it an essential play before the new game arrives.

Prime Day is officially here (yes, Amazon bumped the official sale up to June this year), and it's my pleasure, as well as journalistic duty, to give you the deets on where to find the best sex toy deals.

As I've noted in years past, buying sex toys on Amazon is a gamble. If you don't know what to look for, you could end up with something that does more harm than good (think porous jelly materials or chemical-laden vibrators). On top of that, Amazon isn't allowed to promote sex toys on Prime Day the way it does for TVs and air fryers, which means you have to dig to find the discounts.

Luckily, you have me to do the research for you. To be transparent, while the official sale is live, the best sex toy deals right now aren't actually on Amazon — they're hiding at competing sales from trusted retailers and brands like Lovehoney, LELO, Bellesa Boutique, and Hello Nancy.

Happy shopping!

Best Amazon Prime Day sex toy deal so far

$29.99 at Amazon
$39.99 Save $10.00

Why we like it

This year, the pickings on Amazon are slim, but Tracy's Dog is almost always marked down. It's one of my favorite sex toy brands for people who crave intense clitoral stimulation but aren't willing to pay more than $50. This is one of the only times I feel confident saying you'll get more bang for your buck.

Right now, you can get Tracy's Dog OG Lick (also known as the Juicy Clitoral Licking Vibrator) for $29.99 at Amazon. It doesn't have a "Prime Day deal" badge or even a "discount" listed, but $29.99 is a good deal. For context, it normally retails for $45.99 on the official Tracy's Dog website, so you're saving 35% by grabbing it on Amazon instead.

The OG Lick includes a remote and has seven licking modes and 10 vibration patterns. It's also waterproof and super easy to use hands-free (I actually love using mine while I'm giving my partner head; it's fun for everyone involved). Note: This is a "licking" vibrator; if you want suction, I recommend buying the OG Sucking Vibrator (which isn't available on Amazon for some reason).

Anybody who pre-orders or buys the game before November 20 will also receive the Vintage Vice City Pack, described as "a collection of items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest."

Now you've got the info, let's get to it. I've got those quick links again first, and then lots more detail about the editions and links to retailers for each below that.

Should I pre-order GTA 6?

Folks often discuss or ask me personally whether something is worth pre-ordering or not. That usually comes down to people balancing whether to go early or to wait for launch day stock, or even deals at a later date.

However, this is GTA 6 and my advice is as categorical as ever: this will be the most in-demand video game of all time; you absolutely should pre-order if you are willing and able to do so. I'd still say that, despite physical boxes being 'code in a box' affairs and without disks — there will still likely be a finite number of GTA 6 game boxes with retailers so it might genuinely sell out. If you want the most physical preorder for GTA 6, then still go for it, despite the digital game code within, is my advice.

I really, wholeheartedly recommend a GTA 6 pre-order if you can, just to secure your unit and know that it'll be in your hands on day one.

GTA 6 pre-orders — what's in each edition?

With two GTA 6 pre-order editions and options, there are a few extras and differences to be aware of. If you're looking for a quick overview to inform your choice, then we've got you covered.

Starting off simply, if you pre-order the GTA 6 standard edition, you will get the following:

  • The base game as a digital code in a physical box
  • Vintage Vice City Pack — "a collection of items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest."
  • The ability to preload from November 12

The Ultimate Edition gets you a few more digital bonuses on top of what's in the standard edition, though Rockstar's description is a little vague still.

  • The base game as a digital code in a physical box
  • Vintage Vice City Pack — "a collection of items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest."
  • Digital bonuses — "An exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story."
  • The ability to preload from November 12

Live updates

It's finally happening — GTA 6 pre-orders are here

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of GTA 6 pre-orders. It's an incredibly exciting time and I've made it my mission to present you the best information, latest details, and all the best retailer links to pre-order Rockstar's latest and greatest as soon as they go live.

Strap in, it's going to be a heck of a ride!

Pricing information finally arrived

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia

The huge news to come today, just ahead of pre-orders going live at midnight local time, June 25, was the pricing - at least some of it. Rockstar confirmed that the standard edition of the game will cost $79.99 and the ultimate edition of the game will cost $99.99.

What does that mean for other territories? No idea, really — a UK price could be the same numbers but in GBP, but we just don't know yet.

Read our full story here: We finally know the official GTA 6 price ahead of pre-orders — it's expensive, but not as bad as some expected

Folks in New Zealand can pre-order right now!

Because Rockstar has opted for a midnight local time launch for pre-orders around the world, we're already seeing folks place their orders and see it on official storefronts.

Fans in New Zealand can currently head over to the PS Store and snag their pre-order! How exciting!

Will you be pre-ordering?

Pre-ordering games is always a bit of debate among fans, but GTA 6 might be the one that transcends all concerns about pre-ordering a game.

Will you be placing a pre-order? Take our poll below, and we'll see how many folks are keen, and how many might be holding back.

Pre-orders in Australia should be live very soon

GTA 6

We'll soon have another country going live with pre-order time arriving for fans in Australia very soon. I've only seen the PS Store and Xbox store live with links or listings so far though - no actual retailers, which I'm curious about.

A collector's POV

I'm a little bit of a gaming gear and games collector — nothing huge by any means, but certainly my most favorite or anticipated things, for sure — and I'm a bit disappointed about the physical editions just being a code in a box. I would have loved to have placed a pre-order knowing I was getting a full physical edition with box, disk, and anything else.

A saving grace may be that there's some cool art or a map, or something else inside the boxes alongside the code — but equally, Rockstar would surely have detailed those bits in order to paint a full picture and sell the editions. Anyway, I live in hope...

Australian pre-orders are live at the PlayStation and Xbox stores!

As expected, Australians can now get in on the GTA 6 pre-order action by placing digital pre-orders on the game on either of the major console storefronts right now!

First physical copies I've seen at a retailer

JB HiFI in Australia and New Zealand are the best retailer to go live with listings as far as I can tell, and gives us a first (predictable) look at how shops and online retailers will be selling the game!

The only thing really of note in the description though is that "A disc will not be included in the box."

Don't make a big mistake when choosing editions

GTA 6

Gaming Editor Dashiell Wood has some timely advice for those choosing which edition to buy:
"Don't bank on Rockstar Games offering an upgrade to the Ultimate Edition if you only buy the standard version. I was caught out back when I bought the standard edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 and soon discovered that I wouldn't be able to access that game's Ultimate Edition goodies unless I bought a whole new copy.

Choose your edition of GTA 6 carefully. If you think you want any of the content from the Ultimate Edition, then it's the one to go for. An extra $20 now could save you from feeling like you missed out in future. I'm not making the same mistake twice."

It's a crime these Lego Star Wars sets are being retired but you can save big before they go

24 June 2026 at 13:42

Lego is amazing, and Lego Star Wars in particular. The fact that you can spend $1000 on a gigantic Death Star set is a clear sign it's not just for kids.

But there's a catch; Lego retires sets, meaning that, unless you're willing to pay silly prices on eBay, they're forever out of your reach. Oh, sure, Lego might need space for new sets, and stores likewise, but that's no excuse to rob builders of the best Lego Star Wars sets, especially with Star Wars' 50th anniversary next year.

I've rounded up the best deals on retired or retiring Lego sets. Some of these sets have been this price before Prime Day but don't count on them sticking around much longer.

24 June 2026 at 13:12

Vale a pena jogar Star Fox?

The House of the Dead.

24 June 2026 at 12:52

*Marcelo Crespo

iPhone 18 news, leaks, and rumors: Release date, iPhone 18 Pro details, more.

24 June 2026 at 12:02
An iPhone Pro model in front of a dark background with the number 18 next to it

Apple's flagship smartphone hasn't taken a year off from its updates since 2007, and barring a massive surprise, 2026 won't be any different.

The Cupertino-based tech giant is widely expected to launch a new lineup of iPhones later this year, including the new iPhone 18, the 18 Pro, and the rumored iPhone Ultra, the company's first-ever foldable.

As we await the iPhone 18 — and its updated operating system, iOS 27 — tidbits of news and rumors continue to trickle out. While we won't see any of the new Apple phones in the wild for months, we can at least bring you the most substantiated and most likely updates in one place.

Want to learn more about getting the best out of your tech? Sign up for Mashable's Top Stories and Deals newsletters today.

iPhone 18 release date and pricing

If you're in the market for a new iPhone, you should circle September in your calendar. That has been the month for Apple's big showcase event for a very long time, and there's no reason to believe Apple will change that in 2026. Expect to see new Apple CEO John Ternus take the stage to introduce it; his term of office officially begins Sept. 1.

What he'll be introducing, alas, may put more of a dent in your wallet. Thanks to the ongoing RAM shortage caused by the AI industry (also known as RAMageddon), tons of smartphones, laptops, and gaming consoles are seeing huge price hikes. Experts who've spoken to Mashable say that trend isn't going to stop anytime soon.

As the world's number one smartphone maker, Apple has some advantages over its rivals, but a price increase is definitely coming. We had hoped otherwise — Apple raised prices on its new MacBooks earlier this year, while also introducing a low-cost $599 laptop that put big pressure on its Windows rivals.

But then outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook took the unusual step of preparing us for a pricier iPhone. "Price increases are unavoidable," Cook told the Wall Street Journal in an interview. The Journal quoted an analysis showing that the memory chip components in the iPhone 18 Pro will cost Apple $150 more than those in the iPhone 17 Pro.

So should you expect the phones to cost just $150 more than their predecessors (see the iPhone 17 prices here)? You wish. There's the pesky fact that Apple is a for-profit company, and the iPhone is the #1 smartphone in the world for a reason, even though it's already pricier than Samsung's.

How much of an increase will Apple fans bear? We may be about to find out, but the Journal estimated $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro ($200 more than last year).

iPhone 18 models

Barring a huge turn under Ternus, Apple will release a base iPhone 18, an iPhone 18 Pro, and an iPhone 18 Pro Max in late September or early October. One thing that might be a surprise (depending on how much tech news you follow) is that Apple may launch or announce a foldable iPhone alongside the normal iPhone 18 models.

That phone is rumored to be called the iPhone Fold, or iPhone Fold Ultra. It's not strictly a member of the iPhone 18 family, at least by name, so head to our hub for all things iPhone Fold/Ultra to read more about it.

iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro design

Again, Apple has not released any official teasers or other imagery for the iPhone 18 lineup yet, so anything reported to date could be wrong. Still, from the sum total of all reports, it sounds like Apple isn't really reinventing the wheel, design-wise. But Ternus, a hardware guy, is reportedly bringing the company's industrial design group into the center of the Apple fold.

Looking further into the future, the iPhone 20 is said to bring big changes, including a curved waterfall display.

Per our friends at CNET (Mashable and CNET are both owned by Ziff Davis), the display sizes will be roughly the same as last year:

  • iPhone 18: 6.3 inches

  • iPhone 18 Pro: 6.3 inches

  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: 6.9 inches

However, the display quality might be a little different this year. Prominent leaker Instant Digital shared on Chinese social media that Apple's brightness demands are unusually high this year, so it would be reasonable to expect much brighter displays than in previous years.

The base iPhone 18 could also have a smaller camera bump compared to previous models. There are reports of a slightly redesigned Dynamic Island on the screen itself, with the pill-shaped notification hub potentially being made smaller in the iPhone 18 models. One alleged leaked image purports to show an iPhone 18 Pro with a downsized Dynamic Island cutout.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Wondering about the iPhone 18 color options? For the iPhone 18 Pro, at least, it seems the color options have already leaked. Previous rumors indicated Apple was experimenting with a "deep red" color for the iPhone 18 Pro, and a new report from MacWorld backs that up. According to their reporting, the color lineup for the iPhone 18 Pro will be silver, gray, light blue, and a color called "dark cherry" — likely the deep red previously reported.

Sadly, we think fans of black iPhones are out of luck again.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

iPhone 18: rumored hardware features

So we know the software the iPhone 18 will run: iOS 27, introduced at WWDC 2026. Time to start talking about some of the internal hardware changes Apple is reportedly making to the iPhone 18 lineup.

For starters, it sounds like the lineup will have a standardized 12GB RAM count across the board. In previous years, the Pro models had 12GB of RAM, while the base model had only 8GB. According to Korean outlet The Bell, Apple will be upgrading the base model so that it matches the Pro models in that regard. It's also widely expected that Apple will adopt new A20 and A20 Pro chips for the base and Pro models, respectively.

It's also expected that the new iPhones will have a new C2 modem for improved cellular connectivity, and they may also have 5G satellite support. Also reported: a new N2 chip for better WiFi performance.

Latest iPhone 18 Pro rumors

For the iPhone 18 Pro, the current expectation is that Apple will improve the battery size in the premium iPhone 18 models this year. Leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo reported that the batteries could exceed 5,000mAh, which would be an improvement over the iPhone 17 Pro.

In addition, the smaller camera cutout reportedly applies only to the base model. It's expected that Apple will retain the bigger plateau seen on the iPhone 17 Pro last year for the iPhone 18 Pro.

Instant Digital posted in a separate Weibo leak that the back glass of the iPhone 18 Pro has been altered, resulting in a new unified look, as opposed to the two-tone look of the iPhone 17 Pro. Whether that change will affect durability (or if it's just an aesthetic difference) remains to be seen.

iPhone 18 camera rumors

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a source of many spot-on iPhone reports, says the iPhone 18 Pro, in particular, will have "some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup's history."

Why? First, the telephoto camera has a larger aperture. But more important is the variable aperture.

First reported by Digital Chat Station on Weibo, variable aperture is a huge deal. It would let the iPhone 18 Pro camera capture different amounts of light for different situations — potentially leading to a huge leap in photo quality, if you know what you're doing.

For instance, the bokeh effect famously associated with portrait mode on iPhones would be possible in-camera rather than through software processing, resulting in more natural and generally better-looking shots.

What about AI Siri?

Of course, one of the first things many users will want to know about the iPhone 18 when they get their hands on one: what is the new, revamped, AI-upgraded Siri experience like?

We've been waiting for the answer for some time. Apple first promised users a newer, smarter, Apple Intelligence-powered Siri two years ago, and the company has since faced lawsuits after it failed to deliver. (The company settled a class action suit related to these claims for $250 million.)

Well, post-WWDC, we know a lot more about Apple Intelligence in general. We know Siri will understand what's on your screen. We know Siri will be smarter in general, powered by Gemini. And as Apple daddy Craig Federighi has been at pains to point out, AI Siri will not try to suck you into conversations and be your friend.

"Siri really wants to say, 'I can help you get things done. I can help you learn about the world," Federighi said. "But if you try to engage Siri as a romantic partner, Siri's not up for that. Siri's 100 percent not into that."

What do the IPOs for SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic mean for Microsoft?

24 June 2026 at 12:00

The AI IPO tsunami on the stock market has only recently gotten under way, with SpaceX’s more-than-$2 trillion IPO likely to be followed in several months by OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s IPOs — each of which is likely to hit $1 trillion.

That will mint three new trillion-dollar AI companies in a matter of months, all of which compete with Microsoft.

Wall Street has never seen anything like it. Previously, the most money raised by all IPOs in a single year was $671 billion in 2021. It took 38,644 deals to get to that figure. Compare that to three deals this year that by themselves will likely total $4 trillion.

The numbers are eye-popping.

For Microsoft though, it’s not the numbers themselves that are important. It’s what will happen to the company once it as three newly minted trillion-dollar AI competitors. Until recently, when it came to AI, Microsoft was king of the hill. But can it keep that place?

Microsoft’s weakened position

The IPOs come at a particularly fraught time for Microsoft. At one point, it was the most valuable AI company in the world, with a big head start on the tech industry.

No longer. Microsoft’s stock price has tanked in the past 12 months, even as the S&P index has soared. In the last year, Microsoft’s stock price has dropped 24%, while the S&P has jumped 24%. The two were pretty much in sync until last fall..

Microsoft has fared even worse against its most powerful AI competitor, Google. In June 2025, Google’s total value was $2.1 trillion, well behind Microsoft’s  $3.57 trillion. By  mid-June this year Google was worth $4.5 trillion, Microsoft, $2.8 trillion. That’s entirely due to Google’s AI push and Microsoft’s failure to improve Copilot significantly.

Matt Vellosso, who worked for Microsoft for 14 years — including four as technical advisor to CEO Satya Nadella and then as Partner Director for fostering AI innovation in Windows before leaving in 2023 — is scathing about what he views as Microsoft’s AI failures.

He warned: “Microsoft missed the internet wave, the mobile wave and now it missed the AI wave.”

Show me the money

The most immediate likely impact on Microsoft after the three massive IPOs take place will be on the company’s stock price, which could well take another hit. Investors don’t want to miss out on the AI boom, and until now, there’s been a relatively small number of companies in which they could. When Anthropic and OpenAI join SpaceX as publicly traded companies, investors will have three more choices than they did only a few months ago. That could make it tougher for Microsoft to attract AI-focused investors. And that, in turn, could knock down its stock price.

A lower stock price means the company will have a harder time raising money when it needs it. In addition, Microsoft won’t be able to as easily buy other companies in stock-only deals, because the value of its stock will be less.

Still, the IPOs are not all bad news for Microsoft’s stock position. It does, after all, own 27% of OpenAI. So if OpenAI is valued at $1 trillion after its IPO, Microsoft has a $270 billion stake in it.

Thumbs up for increased Azure revenue

One area where these mega IPOs should be unalloyed good news for Microsoft is in Azure revenue, which should significantly. Microsoft’s final divorce settlement with OpenAI requires the latter to buy $250 billion in Azure services through 2030. And its  estimated trillion-dollar valuation ensures the company will be around for the long term, meaning Microsoft can count on that revenue — and possibly more on an ongoing basis.

Microsoft will likely also get tens of billions of dollars from Anthropic for Azure cloud services. Anthropic might spend $43 billion annually on Azure cloud services by 2030, according to estimates by HSBC, one of the world’s largest banking and financial services companies.

Thumbs down for the effect on Copilot

Although Azure use will boom thanks to the IPOs, Microsoft’s own Copilot could face significant competition at a time when it’s having serious problems gaining traction. In its April 2026 earnings call, the company said Microsoft 365 Copilot had 20 million paid seats. That’s up from 15 million paid seats as of January, but still a minuscule number, considering Microsoft has 450 million Microsoft 365 commercial subscribers. That means only about 4% of the company’s business customers have been willing to pay for it since its launch in late 2023.

Beyond that, developers have been leaving GitHub Copilot and turning to Anthropic’s Claude Code and SpaceX’s recently purchased Cursor. A survey by the software development company JetBrains of more than 10,000 developers found that 29% used GitHub Copilot, 18% used Cursor and 18% used Claude Code.

Early in 2025, GitHub Copilot had a commanding 67% market share.

More downside than up from the IPOs

Although the IPOs do have some upside for Microsoft — dramatically increased Azure revenue and several hundred billion dollars in OpenAI stock holdings — mostly, they’re bad news thanks to increased competition.

Unless Microsoft significantly improves Copilot for businesses, developers and consumers, the company’s one-time AI dominance will erode even further.

Entry-level AI workers now need ‘senior-level’ skills, PwC says

24 June 2026 at 12:00

AI has created a tough job environment for entry-level workers and things aren’t getting better anytime soon — even those with AI capabilities now need “senior-level” skills to land a job.

“AI-exposed entry-level roles are seven times more likely to require traditionally senior-level skills such as judgement and leadership,” consulting firm PwC said in a study released this month.

That’s because AI is changing the traditional career ladder. Companies are increasingly looking for candidates that use the cutting-edge tools and services to amplify their performance and grow faster. “Organizations must rethink how they mentor and train junior staff, helping them step up to complex decision-making much earlier in their careers,” PwC said.

Entry-level job seekers with or without AI skills are already dealing with stagnant wages,  layoffs, and stalled hiring.

(The PwC findings echo similar concerns raised late last year in McKinsey’s State of AI report. Many companies are reducing headcount by deploying AI agents to take over entry-level jobs.)

Early-career AI job postings “have flatlined in highly AI exposed sectors,” and listings for junior roles with mid-career or senior-level skills have grown 35% since 2019, PwC said.  The consulting firm largely discounted the notion that AI is taking jobs away, though other studies point in the opposite direction.

By the end of May, AI-driven job cuts had reached 87,174 for 2026, already outpacing the total of around 54,836 in 2025, according to figures released by Challenger, Gray and Christmas earlier this month.

The AI-driven layoffs haven’t reached the “jobpocalypse” stage yet, and workers are more productive with it, said Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer at Challenger, Gray and Christmas. But companies are rethinking hiring and long-term operational strategies as AI becomes a routine component in daily workflows and processes, he said.

Businesses are “restructuring aggressively as they reposition for an AI-driven economy,” he said.

That’s putting downward pressure on entry-level hiring as AI tools absorb more routine work, said Kye Mitchell, head of Experis US, a part of ManpowerGroup. “That doesn’t remove opportunity, but it changes the expectations. Employers now expect candidates to come in with hands-on experience, AI familiarity, and the ability to contribute faster,” Mitchell said.

Compensation remains strong for specialized, in-demand skills, while more commoditized roles such as customer service, helpdesk, and some entry-level positions  are flattening. “The shift overall is toward skills-based hiring, where demonstrable capability matters more than credentials alone,” Mitchell said.

Graduates who combine technical fundamentals with practical experience, AI fluency and strong communication skills stand out quickly. Job candidates can’t rely solely on academic credentials.

“Employers are moving away from ‘train-from-scratch’ hiring and looking for talent that can contribute earlier and continue to adapt,” Mitchell said.

The PwC study also focused on the productivity gap between companies that have invested heavily in AI and companies lagging in adoption.

Since ChatGPT showed up in 2022, AI-exposed companies have seen productivity gains of 40% versus other companies. “The companies achieving the biggest productivity gains from AI are not using it only to cut costs,” PwC said.

AI-forward firms are also raising headcounts and wages. “Far from being a job killer, AI may actually be a job expander when used to unlock growth and enter new markets,” PwC said.

Workers who use their domain expertise to supplement AI tools can advance, with AI-exposed roles “2.5 times more likely to rely on skills like empathy, judgement, and creativity that become even more valuable as AI absorbs some routine work,” PwC said.

The Android dark mode power-pack: 5 secrets for a smarter screen setup

24 June 2026 at 10:45

Few things are as delightfully divisive as Android’s dark mode.

Some phones now ship with Android’s darker-style interface activated by default. Most reasonably recent devices offer it as a swift ‘n’ simple toggle. And most people, in my experience, have amusingly strong preferences about which approach they prefer — the standard Android “light” mode, in which screens tend to be bright and with shades of white as a foundation, and the dark mode (a.k.a. “dark theme”), where black and dark gray dominate and everything is much more muted and muddy.

It really is a night and day difference, so to speak — but no matter where you fall on the light vs. dark preference spectrum, it’s well worth your while to noddle over two pertinent points:

  1. Android’s dark mode doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing decision. With the right setup, you can use it as a dynamically activated sometimes switch that enables itself automatically based on different variables and gives you a darker, less glary motif when conditions call for it while leaving you with the lighter, brighter look the rest of the time.
  2. Regardless of how often you’re using dark mode, a few easy adjustments will make it meaningfully more complete and effective as an end-to-end interface style for whatever you’re doing on your device.

It occurred to me recently that we’ve gone over several smart Android dark mode enhancements over the past weeks and months — and that, put together into a single power-pack bundle, these small-seeming items can add up to create a pretty dramatic difference in your Android-using experience, whether you’re a full-fledged dark mode convert or a more light-preferring vampire skeptic.

Here, specifically, are five easy ways to make Android’s dark mode meaningfully better for you.

[Keep the nerdy knowledge coming with my free Android Intelligence newsletter — something new and useful in your inbox every Friday!]

Android dark mode power-up #1: The app expansion

Up first is a feature that arose as part of our Android 17 discussion and sparked the entire idea for this collection — and that’s the one-tap switch in the latest Android version that forces every app on your phone to follow your dark mode preference, whether the program technically supports such a setting or not.

In Android 17, finding and flipping that switch will make every app turn dark whenever the system-wide dark mode is active. It eliminates the irksome exceptions that’ve traditionally stayed stubbornly light (due to developer laziness) even when your dark theme is on.

If you’ve got Android 17 on your phone already, it couldn’t be much easier to make it happen. Just look in the Display section of your system settings, tap the words “Dark theme,” then change the setting that shows up next from “Standard” to “Expanded.”

Android 17 dark theme expanded
Android’s new “Expanded” option lets you force apps into dark mode compliance, even if they aren’t designed to do it on their own.

JR Raphael, Foundry

No Android 17? No problem: On devices with reasonably recent pre-Android-17 system software, you can actually find a switch buried deep in some developer settings that’ll let you enable the exact same option without any waiting.

Follow these instructions and enjoy your new universally consistent darkened dynamic.

Android dark mode power-up #2: A darkened web

That first trick fixes the issue of certain apps not following your dark mode preference — but what about the web? Most of us spend a fair amount of time in our browsers these days, and most websites won’t follow a dark mode setting and adjust their interfaces accordingly.

They absotively can, though. With the flip of a single switch buried within your browser’s bowels, you can force every website into a darkened motif whenever your system-level dark mode is up and running.

See?

Android dark mode - Chrome web
Viewing a website in Chrome normally, at left, and with dark-mode-associated web darkening, at right.

JR Raphael, Foundry

Here’s the secret:

  • Open up Chrome on whatever Android device you’re using. (And note that this will also work with any Chromium-based Chrome alternative, like Brave, Edge, or Vivaldi.)
  • Type chrome:flags into the address bar.
  • Type darken into the search box at the top of the screen that comes up next.
  • See the line labeled “Darken websites checkbox in themes setting”? Tap the “Default” box beneath it, and change its setting to “Enabled.”
  • Tap the blue “Relaunch” button at the bottom of the screen.

Now, when Chrome comes back a second or so later…

  • Tap the three-dot menu icon in its upper-right corner.
  • Tap “Settings” in the next menu.
  • Scroll down until you see “Appearance.” Tap it, then tap “Theme.”
  • Make sure the newly added box for “Apply dark theme to sites, when possible” — which we just magically made appear via our last little modification — is checked and active.
Android dark mode - Chrome web setting
Chrome’s web-darkening option appears only after you’ve enabled an out-of-the-way flag.

JR Raphael, Foundry

And that’s it: From that moment onward, whenever your Android device is switched into its dark mode, any website you’re viewing within Chrome will automatically follow suit. Nothing more to it, and no further thought or action ever required on your part.

Not bad, eh?!

Android dark mode power-up #3: A dark mode schedule

Even as someone who isn’t into dark mode as a 24/7 sort of thing, I can definitely appreciate the presence of a dimmer, less glary look on my device in certain specific scenarios.

It’s incredibly easy to overlook or forget, but Google’s actually got a way to handle that for you. In fact, it’s been built into Android itself since 2020’s Android 11 release.

Just look in the Display section of your system settings and tap the line for either “Dark theme” or “Dark mode settings.” If you see a toggle alongside that line, make sure you’re tapping the actual words next to it — not the toggle itself.

Then look for the option to create a schedule.

Android dark mode schedule
An Android dark mode schedule, as seen in Google’s standard Android interface (at left) and in Samsung’s Android style (right).

JR Raphael, Foundry

You can create a time-based rule for when your device’s dark mode turns on and back off again, or — more intelligent yet — you can set it to automatically activate at sunset, wherever you are at any given moment, and then turn itself back off and switch you back over to light mode at sunrise.

You can also integrate dark mode into Android’s rarely noticed Bedtime Mode so that the screen getting dimmer is part of your pre-sleep winddown routine, if you really wanna get wild.

Or — ahem…

Android dark mode power-up #4: Contextual dark mode

A dark mode schedule is pretty forkin’ sensible. But the reality is that even with a time-based setup or a sunset-driven activation approach, you’ll still be using your phone in bright rooms with dark mode active and vice-versa.

And if you want Android’s dark theme present only when you’re actually in a dark room — as makes the most sense in my mind — there’s an even more intelligent option.

It comes our way via a handy little free app called Adaptive Theme. That app does one thing and only thing only: It automatically adjusts your device’s dark mode setting based on the actual ambient light around you, using your phone’s sensors rather than an arbitrary time or a not-always-relevant sunset status as a guide. It makes so much sense, you’ll find yourself wondering why your phone didn’t just work that way from the get-go.

The app does unavoidably have a slightly complex one-time setup, which I outline step-by-step here. It’s perfectly safe to do, though, and it shouldn’t take you more than a couple minutes to pull off.

And once you’ve done that, your Android dark mode will just work for you — flipping on when the lighting around you is dim (to your exact specifications) and flipping back off when you’re in brighter surroundings.

Android dark mode: Adaptive Theme settings
Adaptive Theme lets you take total control of how and when Android’s dark mode activates based on your environment.

JR Raphael, Foundry

Yes, please — and thank you. Last but not least…

Android dark mode power-up #5: The wallpaper wizard

Superficial as it may seem, the one piece of the puzzle we haven’t yet addressed — that isn’t ordinarily affected by Android’s dark mode setting — is your home screen wallpaper.

By default, whatever wallpaper you set at the system level stays the same even as your interface moves between its dark and light states — and when you’re anglin’ for a dimmer, less glary look in dark environments, that can be pretty darn jarring.

An app called, rather aptly, Dark/Light Wallpaper Scheduler is the answer you never knew you needed. It’s pretty self-explanatory — you tell it which wallpaper you want when your phone is in dark mode and light mode, then it automatically switches ’em out for you based on that status — but I wrote about it in detail here, if you’re interested in reading more about how exactly it works and how you can make the most of it.

And with that, my fellow Android-appreciating animal, your dark mode power-pack is complete. Now, would someone please turn off the lights? I don’t know about you, but all this talk of darkness has me hankering for a nap.

Prime Day is in full swing, and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025) has already dropped to a new low. Right now it’s $357.24 on Amazon, down from $649.99 — its lowest price yet.

This smartwatch sits at the higher end of Samsung’s lineup and focuses on longer battery life, fitness tracking, and outdoor use. It can run for multiple days on a single charge, depending on usage, which makes it good for travel or training than most standard smartwatches.

It tracks sleep, workouts, and heart rate, then turns that data into simple summaries of your activity and recovery, so you can see patterns over time rather than just raw numbers. The running features adjust guidance based on your pace and heart rate, giving you feedback during workouts.

For outdoor use, it offers strong water resistance, a titanium case, and accurate GPS tracking to maintain location accuracy in areas where the signal can be unreliable, such as busy streets or hiking trails.

All color options are discounted, with prices ranging from $348.27 to $434.99, depending on the finish. Titanium White is the lowest at $348.27, and both Titanium Gray and Titanium Silver are priced at $434.99.

Grab the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025) at Amazon, before your “I’ll start tomorrow” becomes the new normal.

Using Visual Studio Code’s ‘air-gapped’ AI model mode

24 June 2026 at 10:00

Microsoft has been pushing hard to make Visual Studio Code a major way to consume its AI services, mostly in the form of GitHub Copilot. GitHub Copilot’s deep integration with VS Code brings many conveniences — inline autocomplete, for instance — but it’s frustrating for those, like me, who would rather use another model provider, or even a locally hosted LLM, for those functions.

Visual Studio Code 1.122 introduced a new feature, “Use BYOK [Bring Your Own Key] without a GitHub sign-in,” that allows you to “use chat, tools, and MCP servers in air-gapped or restricted environments where GitHub sign-in isn’t possible.” More importantly, it “enables fully offline workflows with local models like Ollama.”

In other words, you can now use locally hosted LLMs for chat, tools, and Model Context Protocol servers inside Visual Studio Code. The one thing you still can’t do is use a local LLM for inline and next-edit suggestions — at least, not without additional tooling.

Choosing a model for BYOK mode

If you want to use a local LLM with VS Code’s bring-your-own-model system, the first thing you need is a way to host the model. VS Code lacks a model-hosting mechanism of its own, although it’s conceivable that a VS Code extension may offer something like that in the future. That said, hosting models is complicated enough that a dedicated app is really needed for the job.

One easy way to host models is via a product like LM Studio, a convenient GUI for standing up, serving, and managing LLMs on one’s own hardware. The model host does not have to be the same system you run VS Code on, either. It can be on a server box you control, or on a cloud instance.

The choice of model is also important. Many models are powerful but won’t run well on commodity hardware because they’re simply too big. A good rule of thumb is to choose a model that fits into existing VRAM, along with the memory needed for a sizable token context (the more, the better). Also, the model should be suited to coding and development work. Some models in this vein that fit comfortably into 8GB VRAM include:

Setting up BYOK mode in VS Code

Once you have a model up and running, you can integrate it with Visual Studio Code. If you’ve disabled VS Code’s AI features, you will need to turn them on. Make sure the setting chat.disableAIFeatures is turned off. You can find it in Settings | Chat | Miscellaneous.

Third-party language models are managed through Visual Studio Code’s language model list. Press Ctrl-Shift-P and type Manage Language Models to open the list of existing language models.

First you will see a list of the built-in models, which are all externally hosted. To add a new model, select Add Models at the top right and select Custom Endpoint.

You’ll then get a series of prompts:

  • Group Name: This is “Custom Endpoint” by default, but you can choose any name you want. The name is strictly for organizing the model list and doesn’t affect things like model recognition or connectivity.
  • API Key: If you’ve configured LM Studio to use an API key for serving models, provide it here. If you’re hosting the model locally and you haven’t explicitly set up API keys, you can leave this blank.
  • API Type: The options here are Chat Completions, Responses, and Messages. Most of the time you’ll want to use Responses, as it’s the most general-purpose option of the three.

Once you finish providing those answers, you’ll be dropped into a modal editor for a JSON file that holds the details about the endpoint you’re configuring.

A newly created custom endpoint for a locally hosted model. The ID, name, and URL still need to be defined for this model to be useful.

You’ll need to provide a few more details by typing them into the labeled fields:

  • id: A text field that uniquely identifies this particular entry. The choice of ID is pretty much arbitrary; if you’re using only a single model, the ID could be the model name.
  • name: The name of the model that is used to identify it on the model server. In LM Studio, you can get this name by clicking on My Models in the main interface, then selecting the three-dot icon for the model in question and clicking Copy Default Identifier. For Qwen 2.5, for instance, name might be something like qwen2.5-coder-7b-instruct.
  • url: The URL to the server’s endpoint. On LM Studio, this defaults to something like http://127.0.0.1:1234/v1. The /v1 at the end is important because that endpoint is used for autodiscovery of models and their capabilities.

The other fields generally don’t need editing. Most models have tool calling functionality. If you know for a fact that the model you’re using doesn’t have vision support, then set vision to false.

Once you have these fields filled in, you can close the modal editor to save the changes. If you reload the Manage Language Models page, you’ll now see your new endpoint:

You should now be able to launch the chat window and use the defined model for conversation and utilities:

One current, and major, limitation of Visual Studio Code’s BYOK functionality is that it only works for chat and utility tasks. It doesn’t allow you to use a local model for inline suggestions or code completions. The only way to take advantage of local models for expanded functionality with VS Code is to use a third-party tool like Continue.

It isn’t clear if Microsoft will eventually lift this restriction. GitHub Copilot integration in VS Code is a large part of how Copilot as a service reaches its target audience. For the time being, you can certainly use third-party and local models for a significant part of your AI-assisted development work in VS Code, and you can close the functionality gap with additional tooling.
