Apple in China occupies a position unlike the company’s presence in any other country. China is simultaneously a major consumer market, a critical manufacturing center, an extensive developer economy and the home of Apple’s most determined hardware competitors.
That combination creates an opportunity few technology companies can ignore. China has hundreds of millions of affluent mobile users, a strong appetite for premium devices and a digital economy built around smartphones.
It also creates unusual complexity. Apple must compete with Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo while satisfying Chinese regulations, navigating tensions between Beijing and Washington and reducing its manufacturing dependence without damaging the supplier network that helped make the iPhone possible.
The latest market figures show why Apple cannot treat China as a business it has already lost. IDC estimated that Apple captured 18.1 percent of Chinese smartphone shipments during the second quarter of 2026, placing it second behind Huawei at 22.6 percent.
Apple’s shipments increased by 24.4 percent from the previous year even as the wider Chinese smartphone market contracted. The recovery demonstrated that Chinese demand for the iPhone remains substantial when product design, storage, performance and pricing align with consumer expectations.
The same figures also show why the position can never be considered secure. Huawei remains ahead, local brands respond quickly and a few percentage points can separate several major vendors.
China is already one of Apple’s largest markets, but its scale means that even established product categories contain room for expansion.
The country has a large premium smartphone segment, extensive 5G coverage and consumers accustomed to using mobile devices for communication, payments, shopping, entertainment, transport and work.
An iPhone purchase can also lead to AirPods, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, iCloud storage and paid applications. The commercial opportunity is therefore larger than the initial handset transaction.
Apple’s strongest advantage is its integrated ecosystem. An iPhone can share passwords, photographs, messages and files with a Mac or iPad, while AirPods and Apple Watch extend the experience without requiring separate accounts and setup systems.
That continuity becomes more valuable as households accumulate devices. Replacing one iPhone is relatively easy. Leaving an ecosystem containing several products, purchased applications, cloud storage and shared family services involves greater friction.
Apple also benefits from a premium identity that remains recognizable in China. Local manufacturers now produce sophisticated flagship phones, but the iPhone continues to operate as both a personal computer and a luxury consumer product.
The importance of that status should not be exaggerated. Chinese buyers are technically informed and increasingly willing to support domestic brands. Brand recognition can attract attention, but it does not excuse weak features or an uncompetitive product cycle.
![]()
Apple’s 2026 recovery offers a useful example of how quickly its position can improve.
China’s smartphone shipments fell 4.3 percent during the second quarter as memory and component costs pushed several manufacturers toward higher prices. Apple and Huawei held prices more stable, giving buyers a reason to purchase while competing brands became more expensive.
The iPhone 17 generation also addressed several areas where Apple’s standard models had appeared conservative beside Chinese flagships. Stronger base specifications made the regular iPhone more competitive without requiring every customer to move into the Pro tier.
This matters in a market where consumers compare display technology, camera systems, storage, battery life, charging and AI features closely. Apple cannot depend entirely on iOS loyalty when domestic companies introduce visible hardware improvements at several price levels.
The rebound does not establish a permanent trend. Smartphone demand in China remains affected by economic confidence, upgrade cycles, government incentives and the timing of major shopping festivals.
Apple’s position can also look different according to the research firm and whether a report measures shipments or consumer sales. Quarterly rankings should be treated as evidence of momentum rather than a final judgment on the market.
The important signal is that Chinese consumers have not broadly rejected the iPhone. Demand can return rapidly when the product and price create a convincing upgrade.
Huawei gives Apple a competitor with advantages unavailable to most global smartphone manufacturers.
The company combines strong national recognition with advanced cameras, communications technology, custom chips, local services and an expanding HarmonyOS ecosystem. Its return to premium smartphones removed the opening Apple had gained when U.S. restrictions disrupted Huawei’s access to important components.
Huawei can also position its products as part of China’s technological self-reliance. That message carries commercial and political weight beyond a conventional comparison between two phones.
Apple must therefore compete against product quality and national sentiment simultaneously. An iPhone can offer strong performance and still lose a purchase to a domestic flagship viewed as technically capable and strategically important.
Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo add different pressures. They move quickly across price categories, experiment with folding designs, adopt larger batteries and provide features adapted to local applications and buying habits.
Chinese phone makers also operate inside a retail and software environment they understand directly. They can build relationships with local platforms, carriers and commerce services without translating a global strategy into Chinese requirements.
Apple follows a more centralized product model. That consistency protects the identity of the iPhone, but it can make the company slower to answer features gaining popularity inside one country.

Apple in China is not only an iPhone business. The installed device base creates demand for applications, cloud storage, entertainment, subscriptions and digital purchases.
China has an enormous developer community producing games, commerce platforms, social services, education tools and productivity software. The App Store connects those developers with high-value iPhone and iPad customers.
The relationship is commercially important but politically complicated. Apple must operate the mainland App Store according to Chinese law, including rules affecting games, generative AI, communications services and content.
Applications available elsewhere may be absent from the Chinese storefront. Developers may also need licenses or regulatory approval before distributing certain categories of software.
Apple changed commission rates and related policies for the mainland China storefront in March 2026. The company described the adjustments as part of maintaining a strong business opportunity for Chinese developers.
Regulatory and developer pressure has not disappeared. Complaints involving commissions, distribution restrictions and payment policies continue to challenge Apple’s control of the platform.
The company cannot simply copy its response from another region. European rules focus heavily on alternative marketplaces and interoperability, while China combines competition concerns with content regulation, data localization and licensing requirements.
Every concession must therefore be designed for a distinct legal environment without fragmenting iOS into an unmanageable collection of regional systems.
Apple’s relationship with China extends far beyond the devices sold there.
For more than two decades, Apple and its manufacturing partners built a dense network of factories, component suppliers, engineers, logistics operators and toolmakers across the country.
That network does more than provide low-cost labor. It can place specialists from several suppliers near an assembly site, modify production lines quickly and increase output to enormous volumes during a product launch.
China’s infrastructure also supports the less visible stages of manufacturing. Components require precision tooling, testing equipment, chemicals, packaging, subassemblies and experienced quality-control teams before final assembly begins.
Apple has expanded iPhone production in India and moved parts of its Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods supply chains to countries including Vietnam. It is also increasing semiconductor and component commitments in the United States.
Those investments reduce the danger of relying on one country, but they do not recreate China’s complete manufacturing environment immediately.
A factory in another region may assemble an iPhone while still depending on Chinese machinery, materials, subcomponents or engineering support. Production diversification is therefore a gradual redistribution of individual stages rather than a clean departure.
Apple must reduce concentration risk without weakening the manufacturing system responsible for its product quality, scale and launch schedules.

The same China supply chain that provides Apple with extraordinary efficiency also exposes the company to political decisions outside its control.
Tariffs can raise the cost of devices exported from Chinese factories. Export restrictions can limit access to materials or production equipment, while sanctions may affect suppliers and technology partners.
Chinese government policies can influence the use of foreign devices inside state agencies and companies. U.S. rules can restrict the technologies available to Chinese firms that also participate in Apple’s supplier network.
Apple cannot solve these problems through product design alone. It must maintain relationships with two governments whose technology policies increasingly emphasize security, domestic production and strategic independence.
Moving more assembly to India gives Apple additional flexibility, particularly for iPhones destined for the United States. China nevertheless remains important as a production center and consumer market.
An aggressive withdrawal could damage supplier relationships and local sales. Moving too slowly could leave Apple vulnerable to another trade disruption.
The company is trying to preserve Chinese capabilities while creating enough capacity elsewhere to keep a political dispute from becoming a worldwide product shortage.
Apple’s physical stores remain an important advantage in China because they give the company direct contact with customers.
The stores allow buyers to compare models, receive technical support, attend educational sessions and enter the ecosystem without depending entirely on a carrier or reseller.
That experience is particularly valuable for premium products. A customer considering a Mac, Apple Vision Pro or high-end iPhone may need more explanation than someone replacing an inexpensive handset.
Retail locations also communicate long-term commitment. A prominent store represents more than a sales channel; it signals that Apple intends to remain part of the local technology market.
Online commerce is equally important. Chinese consumers are accustomed to large shopping festivals, aggressive promotions and rapid delivery through domestic platforms.
Apple must balance its controlled global pricing with a market where discounts can change quarterly rankings. Too little flexibility makes the iPhone appear expensive, while frequent reductions can train customers to delay purchases and weaken its premium image.
The strongest 2026 performance came partly from avoiding price increases while component costs were forcing rivals to reconsider their pricing. That advantage may disappear when competitors adjust their supply chains or launch another cycle of promotions.
China is often discussed as a sales problem for Apple, but it also functions as a demanding test of the iPhone.
Domestic flagship phones compete through larger batteries, rapid charging, advanced camera hardware, folding displays and deep integration with local digital services.
Features considered experimental elsewhere can become established expectations more quickly in China. Apple’s slower adoption cycle may look disciplined in one market and conservative in another.
The company must decide which expectations represent durable improvements and which are temporary specification contests. Copying every local feature would weaken Apple’s focused product strategy, but ignoring major changes creates openings for rivals.
This pressure can benefit Apple globally. Competition in China forces the company to defend the value of its standard iPhone, improve battery efficiency, strengthen cameras and make software features more useful outside English-speaking markets.
The opportunity is therefore not limited to selling more devices. China can reveal where Apple’s global assumptions no longer match the most competitive part of the smartphone industry.

Japan earthquake relief efforts will receive financial support from Apple following the powerful earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu.
CEO Tim Cook announced the donation through social media on July 30. He expressed concern for people facing the earthquake and continuing aftershocks while thanking the first responders helping affected communities.
“Japan has a very special place in my heart.”
Cook wrote before confirming that Apple was making a donation to support relief work.
Apple did not disclose the amount, recipient organizations or whether its contribution would support the immediate emergency response, longer-term reconstruction or both. The company frequently keeps disaster donation amounts private, even when Cook publicly confirms its participation.
The announcement came as rescue teams continued searching damaged homes, industrial facilities and the remains of a shopping center. Survivors were dealing with water shortages, disrupted transportation, damaged buildings and dangerous summer temperatures.

The earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Tuesday, July 28. Japanese reporting and international agencies have described it as a magnitude 7.1 event, while the U.S. Geological Survey measured it at magnitude 6.8. Differences can occur because agencies use different measurement methods and datasets.
The earthquake reached the highest level on Japan’s seismic intensity scale in parts of Kumamoto. Strong shaking damaged roads, houses and public infrastructure across communities near the epicenter.
The confirmed death toll had risen to 34 by Friday, according to Kumamoto prefectural authorities. Additional people were injured or remained missing as emergency workers entered the period when the likelihood of finding survivors beneath collapsed structures begins to decline sharply.
One of the most severe incidents involved an explosion and partial collapse at a shopping center. The earthquake also toppled a large chimney at a paper factory, damaged traditional homes and caused another section of the stone walls at Kumamoto Castle to collapse.
The historic castle was undergoing extensive restoration after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. Damage to rebuilt or partially restored areas illustrates how recovery from one major disaster can remain unfinished when another arrives.
Aftershocks continued during the rescue operation, increasing the danger for emergency personnel entering unstable buildings. They also discouraged residents from returning to damaged homes, even when those structures remained standing.
Thousands of survivors moved into public shelters or slept inside vehicles. Some families chose cars because evacuation centers were crowded, while others feared that another strong tremor could collapse weakened buildings.
Extreme heat added another emergency. High summer temperatures can quickly create dehydration, heat exhaustion and medical complications, particularly for older people, children and residents sleeping in vehicles without reliable cooling.
The Apple donation places the company among several technology and entertainment businesses providing money for Japan earthquake relief and reconstruction.
The Pokémon Company announced a contribution of 100 million yen to Kumamoto Prefecture, the Japanese Red Cross and other support organizations. The funding is intended to assist people affected by the earthquake and support restoration across damaged areas.
Sony committed 50 million yen and began collecting additional employee donations that the company will match. Its contribution is being directed toward the Japanese Red Cross and an emergency fund operated with Save the Children.
Sony has a direct industrial connection to Kumamoto through its semiconductor operations. The company described the prefecture as a community with which it has developed deep ties since establishing the Kumamoto Technology Center in 2001.
Apple also maintains substantial commercial and cultural connections with Japan through its retail stores, developer community, suppliers and customers. Cook has visited the country repeatedly and has met Japanese developers, musicians, educators and manufacturing partners during previous trips.
The amount behind Apple’s latest commitment may never be made public. The absence of a disclosed figure prevents direct comparison with other corporate donations, and it also leaves unanswered which organizations will distribute the money.
Relief contributions can support several different stages of a disaster response. Immediate funding may pay for water, food, temporary shelter, medical care and emergency equipment. Later funding can help repair homes, restore community services and assist families whose employment disappeared with damaged businesses.
The timing of Apple’s donation places it during the immediate emergency rather than after the complete scale of destruction has been calculated. Recovery costs will continue changing as inspectors determine which buildings can be repaired and which must be demolished.

Kumamoto experienced a destructive sequence of earthquakes in April 2016. Those events killed dozens of people, damaged or destroyed more than 100,000 buildings and displaced large numbers of residents.
Apple responded at the time by allowing customers to send donations to the Japanese Red Cross through iTunes. The system offered preset contribution amounts that were transferred without Apple retaining a percentage.
The company has used similar responses after earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and wildfires in several countries. Cook usually announces the commitment publicly while leaving the amount and distribution arrangements private.
Apple has previously contributed directly to relief organizations and has sometimes provided matching programs for employee donations. It has not announced whether employee matching or a customer donation channel will accompany the current Japan earthquake relief commitment.
The 2026 disaster presents different immediate pressures from the 2016 earthquakes because it arrived during intense summer heat. Shelter capacity alone does not solve the problem when buildings lack sufficient cooling, water or private areas for medically vulnerable residents.
Japanese authorities deployed Self-Defense Force personnel and emergency teams to support local rescuers. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed agencies to prioritize the protection of life, collect information quickly and coordinate assistance across national and local government.
Electricity had been restored by Friday evening, according to the local power company, but water remained a serious concern. Kumamoto authorities said nearly 80,000 homes were still without running water, creating demand for bottled supplies, mobile water stations and sanitation support.
A water interruption affects more than drinking. Hospitals, shelters, restaurants and homes need reliable supplies for hygiene, food preparation and medical care. Restoration can take longer than electricity because ruptured pipes must be located, isolated and repaired across damaged roads and neighborhoods.
Apple’s announcement communicates support without defining how the money will be used. The effectiveness of the contribution will depend on the recipient, timing and ability to direct funding toward needs that remain after the first wave of public attention passes.
Immediate rescue work receives the greatest visibility, but rebuilding homes and local businesses can continue for years. Families may need temporary housing long after shelters close, while damaged schools, transportation routes and medical facilities require larger reconstruction programs.
Private donations cannot replace government disaster funding. They can provide additional flexibility for relief groups that need to purchase supplies quickly or reach people whose circumstances do not fit standard assistance programs.
The continuing aftershocks also make damage assessments provisional. A building considered stable after the first inspection may require another examination, while rain or additional shaking can affect weakened slopes and structures.
Apple has not indicated whether it will open a public donation channel through the App Store or another service. Its current response is limited to the corporate contribution confirmed by Cook.
The next stage of Japan earthquake relief will move from search operations toward shelter support, structural inspections and temporary housing. In Kumamoto, the most urgent calculation is already measured beyond financial totals: nearly 80,000 homes need running water restored while residents endure the hottest weeks of the Japanese summer.

Safari web apps give frequently used websites many of the qualities normally associated with installed software. A site can receive its own icon, open outside the regular Safari tab interface and appear alongside native apps on supported Apple devices.
The feature is useful for services that do not offer an App Store download, websites used throughout the workday and online tools that feel crowded when surrounded by unrelated browser tabs.
A Safari web app remains a website rather than becoming native Apple software. Its capabilities, interface and offline behavior depend on how the site was developed. Safari supplies the app-like container, while the website continues providing the actual service.
The experience also differs across Apple devices. iPhone and iPad place web apps on the Home Screen, while Mac saves them as separate applications that can open from the Dock, Spotlight or Applications folder.

A traditional bookmark saves an address inside Safari. Selecting it opens the page in a normal browser tab with the rest of the browsing session.
A Safari web app creates a more focused entry point. Its icon appears with installed apps, and opening it produces a separate app window or full-screen interface without the usual collection of Safari tabs.
This distinction is particularly valuable for communication tools, project dashboards, streaming services, publications and business systems. A user can switch to the website through the App Switcher, Dock or Spotlight instead of locating the correct Safari window and tab.
Web apps can also support notifications and icon badges when the website provides those features. On iPhone and iPad, supported notifications can appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center and on a paired Apple Watch.
The site still controls the quality of the experience. A website designed as a progressive web app may include responsive navigation, offline resources, custom icons and carefully defined window behavior. A basic website may simply open inside a cleaner Safari frame.
Current iPhone software includes an Open as Web App option when adding a website to the Home Screen.
The new icon appears on the iPhone Home Screen. Selecting it opens the site separately from the main Safari interface, and the web app can be closed through the App Switcher like other iPhone apps.
If Add to Home Screen is missing from the Share menu, scroll to the bottom, select Edit Actions and add it to the available actions.
The chosen name should be short enough to remain recognizable below the icon. Safari may use an icon supplied by the website. When a suitable image is unavailable, the generated icon may use a simplified site image or monogram.
The iPad process is similar, although the Share menu reflects the larger Safari interface.
Open the desired website, select Share, choose More if required and tap Add to Home Screen. Turn on Open as Web App before selecting Add.
The resulting icon appears on the iPad where it was created. It can be organized into Home Screen folders and opened through iPad search like other applications.
An iPad web app can be especially useful for browser-based writing tools, office systems, inventory dashboards and educational platforms. Removing the tab bar gives the website more room and makes it easier to use beside another app.
Whether the web app supports multiple windows, external displays or advanced iPad multitasking depends on its design and the capabilities exposed through Safari. Installing a website does not automatically give it every feature available to a native iPad app.
Apple introduced its current Mac web app system with macOS Sonoma 14. Any webpage can be saved as a web app without requiring the website developer to distribute a Mac application.
To create one, open the page in Safari and choose File > Add to Dock. The same command is available through Safari’s Share button.
Safari displays the proposed name and icon before saving the app. After confirmation, the web app appears in the Dock and Spotlight Applications. Its application file is placed inside the Applications folder located in the user’s Home folder.
A Mac web app receives its own window and menu-bar identity. It uses a simplified toolbar containing navigation and sharing controls rather than Safari’s complete tab and bookmark interface.
The web app can remain in the Dock, run automatically as a login item and participate in normal macOS window management. It can also be opened through Spotlight without launching a visible Safari window first.

A Mac web app operates independently from ordinary Safari browsing. Apple says it does not share ongoing browsing history, cookies, website data or settings with Safari.
When the web app is first created, Safari can preserve an existing website sign-in in many cases. Activity after that point remains inside the web app’s separate data container.
This separation resembles using a dedicated Safari profile, but the web app is even more focused. Searching, following links and changing accounts inside it do not add those pages to the normal Safari history.
The arrangement can be helpful when the same service is used for work and personal accounts. Separate web apps can create clearer boundaries, although account behavior still depends on the website.
Isolation can also explain an unexpected sign-in request. A person may already be authenticated in Safari but encounter a separate session after creating, resetting or reinstalling the web app.
Mac web apps include settings that are unavailable to ordinary Home Screen bookmarks.
Open the web app, select its name in the menu bar and choose Settings. The application name, starting address and icon can be changed without recreating the app.
Navigation controls can be shown or hidden. Hiding them creates a cleaner appearance for a dashboard that rarely leaves its main page, while displaying them makes sense for sites with deeper navigation.
The title bar can adopt colors supplied by the website. This helps distinguish several installed services but can be disabled when a consistent Mac appearance is preferred.
The Privacy section controls access to the camera, microphone, screen and location. Website data can also be cleared from this area without deleting normal Safari data.
Compatible Safari extensions can be enabled separately for the web app. This prevents every active Safari extension from automatically affecting a focused work tool.
A supported website can request notification permission after it becomes a web app.
On iPhone and iPad, web push notifications use Apple’s notification system. They can appear on the Lock Screen, inside Notification Center and on a paired Apple Watch. They also respond to Focus settings.
Websites must request permission after a direct user action, such as selecting a notification or subscription button. Simply adding a site to the Home Screen does not automatically authorize alerts.
Supported sites can place a count on the Home Screen icon through web badging. This may represent unread messages, pending tasks or new articles, depending on the service.
Mac web apps can send notifications and display unread badges on their Dock icons. Permission should be granted from inside the web app rather than through the same site in Safari if the alerts are intended to belong to the installed app.
Each web app appears by its chosen name in Apple’s notification settings. Alerts, sounds, badges and preview behavior can then be controlled much like those of downloaded software.
An installed icon does not mean the website has been downloaded completely.
Most web apps continue to require an internet connection because their pages, account data and services remain on remote servers. If the connection disappears, the app may show an error or only display information already stored temporarily.
Websites designed for offline use can cache interface elements and selected content through supported web technologies. The developer decides what remains available without a connection and how changes synchronize later.
This makes offline behavior inconsistent between sites. One writing service may continue editing disconnected documents, while another cannot move beyond its sign-in page.
Anyone depending on a web app during travel should test it in Airplane Mode before assuming that important information will remain accessible.
Links belonging to the same website usually remain inside the web app when they fall within its intended navigation area.
External links may open in Safari because they lead beyond the web app’s domain or configured scope. Authentication systems, payment providers and support pages can also move temporarily into a browser window.
This behavior protects the focused identity of the web app. A project-management tool does not need to become a complete browser simply because a task contains a news link.
A poorly configured website may open more links externally than expected. That behavior is generally controlled by the site rather than by a Safari setting available to the user.

A web app icon appears only on the Apple device where it was created.
Adding a website to an iPhone Home Screen does not install the same web app on an iPad or Mac, even when every device uses the same Apple Account. Each installation must be created separately.
Safari bookmarks, Reading List items and open tabs can synchronize through iCloud, but web app installations remain local. Mac settings and custom icons also do not automatically transfer to another Mac.
This local behavior allows each device to maintain a different collection. A detailed analytics dashboard may belong on a Mac and iPad, while a compact travel service may only need an iPhone icon.
On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the web app icon and select the removal option. Deleting the icon does not cancel the website account or remove the service from the internet.
A Mac web app can be deleted by opening the Applications folder inside the user’s Home folder and moving the app to the Trash. Removing it from the Dock alone only removes the shortcut.
Website data may remain until it is cleared through the web app’s privacy settings or removed with the app, depending on the platform and current software behavior.
Saved documents stored exclusively by the online service remain subject to that service’s account and retention policies. Removing the web app should not be treated as deleting information held by the website.
Safari on Apple Vision Pro can open multiple spatial windows, synchronize bookmarks and tabs through iCloud, save pages to Reading List and place separate browser windows around the user’s space.
Apple’s current Vision Pro guide does not provide the same Add to Home Screen or Add to Dock installation process documented for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
A website can still feel application-like inside its own Safari window, particularly when positioned as a persistent part of a workspace. That does not make it an installed Home View app.
Apple Watch also does not provide a general Safari web app installation system. It can, however, display supported notifications sent by an iPhone Home Screen web app.
A Safari web app opens from a defined starting address, making the selected page important.
Installing a service from its general homepage may produce an app that repeatedly opens promotional content or a sign-in screen. Creating it while viewing an inbox, dashboard, calendar or project page can provide a faster route to the area used every day.
Mac users can change the Application URL later through the web app settings or use Set to Current Page after navigating to a better starting location.
The most effective Safari web apps begin where the work actually happens. A publication can open directly to its latest articles, a company tool can start on its task board and a cloud service can lead to the folder used most often.
That small choice determines whether the icon functions as another website shortcut or becomes an app-like destination that removes several steps from a repeated Apple device workflow.

OpenAI family of devices plans are no longer limited to an experimental gadget hidden inside a design studio. OpenAI President Greg Brockman has confirmed that the company’s first consumer device will begin a broader series intended to reconsider how people interact with artificial intelligence.
The confirmation gives OpenAI’s hardware strategy a clearer shape without revealing the first product itself. Brockman said the company is not ready to discuss the device in detail, but described it as the first in a series that will rethink what devices should be when AI can understand language, observe context and complete tasks.
That ambition extends well beyond placing the ChatGPT app on another piece of hardware. OpenAI wants to reduce the menus, buttons, model selectors and separate applications that currently stand between a person and an AI assistant.
For Apple, Google and other established platform owners, the implication is significant. ChatGPT currently reaches consumers through devices and operating systems controlled by other companies. An OpenAI-designed product would give the company direct control over the microphones, cameras, sensors, interface and account experience through which its models interact with people. 56000
OpenAI’s move into consumer hardware accelerated in 2025 when it acquired io Products in a transaction valued at approximately $6.5 billion.
The startup had been founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive alongside Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan. Its team included hardware engineers, designers, manufacturing specialists and product developers, many of whom had spent years working together at Apple.
OpenAI and Ive had already been collaborating before the acquisition. Their early ideas developed into physical designs, convincing the partners that they needed a dedicated company capable of engineering and manufacturing complete products rather than another software prototype.
The io team officially merged with OpenAI in July 2025. Ive and his design collective LoveFrom remained independent while assuming extensive design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI.
The structure combines OpenAI’s models and software research with a group experienced in turning new interface concepts into mass-produced consumer products. Ive’s previous work helped shape the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and other devices that established Apple’s modern design identity.
OpenAI has continued recruiting hardware expertise from Apple. Paul Meade, who led hardware development for Apple Vision Pro and worked on the company’s smart-glasses efforts, reportedly joined OpenAI’s hardware organization in 2026.
OpenAI also placed product-development veteran Peter Welinder in a leadership role connected to the io division. The resulting organization is not structured like a small accessory project. It is being assembled to develop products, create manufacturing relationships and support more than one form factor.

OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the name, appearance, price or specifications of its first device. It has also not presented the product as a smartphone, pair of glasses, wearable pin or conventional smart speaker.
Recent reporting describes a portable, screen-free device designed primarily for use inside the home. The reported product resembles a compact speaker but includes a rechargeable battery, allowing it to move between rooms rather than remain attached to one location.
A camera and additional sensors would help the device understand its surroundings. Mechanical elements could allow parts of it to move, creating a more expressive physical presence than a stationary speaker waiting for a wake word.
The reported design would rely heavily on OpenAI’s latest voice technology. Instead of requiring a person to wait for the assistant to finish speaking, the system could listen and respond more naturally during overlapping conversation. Access to personal information, including messages or email when authorized, could give it enough context to handle requests rather than merely answer questions.
These details remain reported plans rather than announced specifications. OpenAI could change the hardware, features or release schedule before introducing the product.
The company is reportedly targeting a presentation during 2026 and a commercial release in 2027. Fortune separately reported that the initial design has been finalized, although development of the larger product family continues.
ChatGPT already operates across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and Windows devices. That wide distribution gives OpenAI access to an enormous audience without requiring it to manufacture screens, batteries or processors.
It also leaves crucial parts of the experience under the control of Apple, Google and Microsoft.
An operating system determines when ChatGPT can use a microphone, whether it can run continuously, how notifications appear and which applications it can control. Platform owners can limit background access, change default-assistant rules or promote their own AI systems more prominently.
Those restrictions matter more as ChatGPT develops from a chatbot into an agent. Answering a question inside an app requires relatively little control over the device. Completing a task across messages, calendars, files, cameras and connected appliances requires deeper access.
OpenAI hardware could be designed around those capabilities from the beginning. The assistant would not need to behave like one application among dozens because it could become the primary interface.
Brockman has described the current ChatGPT interface as too complicated, particularly as new models and tools add more controls. OpenAI’s objective is to make much of that interface disappear.
A successful device could allow someone to describe an outcome instead of opening several applications and completing each step manually. The user might ask the assistant to reorganize a day after a delayed flight, contact the relevant people and adjust reservations. The interface would be the request and the resulting confirmation rather than a sequence of taps.
Calling the project a family of devices changes the strategy. One experimental product would need to prove its value independently. A coordinated group could distribute different sensors and functions across the places where people already live and work.
A home device could provide shared access in kitchens and living spaces. A personal wearable could preserve private conversations while moving outside. A future mobile product could handle visual information, navigation and communication without reproducing the application grid of a smartphone.
OpenAI is reportedly developing approximately five hardware concepts, with the screen-free home companion receiving priority. The company has also explored wearables and home robotics, although none of those later products has been announced.
The devices would become more useful if they shared the same ChatGPT identity, memory controls and task history. A request started at home could continue through another product without requiring the user to repeat the people involved, the desired result or the decisions already made.
That continuity is one of the strongest advantages Apple currently receives from controlling a complete ecosystem. An iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and HomePod can exchange information because Apple designs the devices, operating systems and cloud services together.
OpenAI appears to be pursuing a different center of gravity. Instead of making the operating system coordinate applications, it could make the AI assistant coordinate specialized devices.

OpenAI’s hardware work does not mean the company intends to reserve ChatGPT for its own products.
Brockman has said OpenAI is interested in deeper integrations with smart glasses, wearables and other devices through its application programming interfaces. The company wants ChatGPT to become an interface available across hardware categories, including products manufactured by third parties.
That creates a two-track strategy. OpenAI can use its own devices to demonstrate the experience it considers ideal while allowing other manufacturers to connect their cameras, microphones and sensors to ChatGPT.
Third-party distribution would help OpenAI reach consumers who do not want another dedicated device. It would also reduce the risk of depending entirely on the success of one hardware launch.
The difficult part will be keeping those experiences consistent. A wearable may have limited battery capacity, a camera may require visible privacy controls, and a speaker may depend on cloud processing when a connection is available. OpenAI will need to define what its assistant can do reliably across products with very different technical limits.
The first generation of dedicated AI gadgets established a warning for every company entering this market.
Humane’s AI Pin and the Rabbit R1 attracted attention by promising an alternative to application-based computing. Their launches also exposed problems involving response delays, battery life, incomplete features and tasks that remained easier on a smartphone.
Those products demonstrated that access to a language model does not automatically justify a new object. Consumers need to understand why they should carry, charge and maintain another device when ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants already operate on phones.
OpenAI has several advantages those earlier companies lacked. It controls one of the most widely used AI services, operates the models behind the interface and has the resources to improve the software after launch. The io acquisition gives it experienced design and manufacturing leadership rather than requiring it to assemble a hardware organization gradually.
The standard will consequently be higher. A well-designed enclosure and natural voice will not be enough if the device cannot complete dependable tasks more efficiently than an iPhone or Android phone.
OpenAI’s expansion beyond Apple devices has also produced a direct legal confrontation with Apple.
Apple filed a federal lawsuit in July 2026 accusing OpenAI, io and former Apple employees of misappropriating confidential hardware information. The complaint alleges that trade secrets connected to unreleased products, engineering processes and suppliers were taken for the benefit of OpenAI’s hardware business.
OpenAI has denied having any interest in Apple’s trade secrets and said it was unaware of evidence giving the complaint merit. The allegations have not been decided by a court.
Apple is seeking restrictions on the use of its confidential information, along with the return of materials and financial damages. The case could require OpenAI to separate employees from parts of the project, replace suppliers or repeat engineering work if disputed information is found inside the development process.
It does not automatically establish that OpenAI’s reported product copies an Apple device. The first OpenAI design is described as substantially different from Apple’s current hardware, but the legal dispute could still affect when it can be manufactured or sold.
The most important details at OpenAI’s eventual hardware presentation may have little to do with the object’s shape.
A camera-equipped device that learns from activity inside a home will need unmistakable recording indicators, understandable data-retention controls and a simple method for temporarily disabling its sensors. Owners will need to know which information remains on the device, what reaches OpenAI’s servers and which memories can be reviewed or deleted.
OpenAI will also have to explain whether the product requires a paid ChatGPT subscription, how much it can do without an internet connection and whether multiple members of a household receive separate identities. Those choices will determine whether it behaves like a personal assistant, a shared appliance or a new subscription terminal.
Support for messages, calendars, music and connected appliances will require cooperation from outside companies. A device cannot replace frequent phone interactions if it remains unable to enter the services where those interactions occur.
The first model will therefore establish more than OpenAI’s industrial-design language. It will set the privacy, account, subscription and developer rules that every later member of the OpenAI family of devices inherits.

Operando optical microscopy shows avalanche-like lithium deintercalation (intercalation) processes as the dilute stages of graphite are emptied (filled), showing how local disorder governs phase-transition dynamics and ion transport in lithium-ion battery electrodes.Elon Musk has promised that before the year is out, his AI tool Grok Imagine will produce a full-length film of Homer’s Odyssey that is, in his words, “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer”.
The claim, posted on X in July alongside a three-minute AI-generated scene, arrived days after Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster version reached cinemas worldwide – a film Musk has spent months attacking for being “woke”.
Set aside, for a moment, that The Odyssey is a 2,800-year-old poem that includes a witch who turns men into pigs and a one-eyed giant shepherd, to ask a simpler question: accurate to what?
There are no photographs of ancient Ithaca. There is no footage of the Trojan shore. What we have is stories, poems, pottery and paint, and, more recently, a century of films that imagined the ancient world for us. That is the only material a generative model has ever seen.
So when Grok Imagine – the AI image generator developed by Musk’s xAI company – renders antiquity, it is not reaching back into history. It is reaching for the centre of every image already made about it – the most probable ancient warrior, assembled from Gladiator, Troy and 300 and a hundred years of sword-and-sandal cinema. The result will not look like the past. It will look like other films about the past, averaged out by AI.
And here is the part that should give anyone bandying about the word “accurate” pause. A machine that reaches for the most probable image does not correct our clichés about antiquity. It concentrates them. Ask it for a classical statue and it will hand you gleaming white marble, because that is how we picture the ancient world.
Except the ancient world did not look like that. Greek and Roman sculpture was painted in strong colours – the pristine white marble in our heads is a later idealisation, not the thing itself. An AI model trained on our pictures of the past will reproduce our mistakes about the past – confidently – and give them back to us labelled as truth. That is the opposite of accuracy. It is our own error, upscaled.
This is why “historically accurate” is not really a script problem. It is an image problem. Accuracy on screen is delivered through light, lens, skin, texture, cloth and grain – the hundred deliberate decisions a director of photography agonises over in every frame.
A machine makes those decisions too, but it makes them by consensus, by defaulting to the most probable choice. Research on generative AI has already found that it makes individual work feel more creative while making the whole field more similar, everything drifting toward the same middle. The same regression to the mean that flattens prose will flatten the picture. You do not get the accurate past, and you do not get the thrilling lie. You get the average, and the average is where nothing memorable lives.
Which brings me to escapism, and to a tension in my own work I am happy to admit. I research and teach sustainable, naturalistic image-making – stripping away artifice, working with available light. But I have also argued, including in a TED talk, that escapism matters, and that realism is often its enemy.
Take everything excessive and dangerous out of James Bond and you remove the reason anyone watches. Nolan’s Odyssey is not trying to be accurate. It is trying to be exciting – and excitement is a decision. It is a point of view, a piece of the filmmaker put deliberately on the screen.
Heightening is a choice about what to exaggerate, and a choice is exactly what an average cannot make. A machine that lives at the mean can smooth, but it cannot heighten. So the “exciting” AI blockbuster arrives with the one quality excitement depends on already removed.
There is a reason the AI clips flooding our feeds feel flavourless even when they are technically clean. It is not that the tools are young and will improve. It is that averaging is what they do. Watch a real performer and you are watching a human being decide – take a risk, make a choice you might not have made – in front of you.
That is the thing we actually go to films for, and it is precisely the thing an average has no way to contain. Whether audiences keep noticing is the open question. The appetite to make this work is real, because it is cheap. The appetite to watch it is the thing nobody has tested yet. And the unease many people already feel watching AI slop and struggling to say why it repels them, is not naivety. It is a correct response to work that no one made decisions about.
So what is the endgame? Not, I think, simply proving it can be done. If you only wanted to prove a technical point you would not reach for the word accurate – least of all for a poem, where accuracy means nothing. Reaching for accurate is reaching for authority: the right to say what is true.
Musk is a man who publicly objected to the casting of a black actor as Helen of Troy and a trans actor as a Greek warrior. A man who operates within a wider political project about who gets to tell the national story, now claiming that a tool he owns can portray the past as it truly was. Follow that to its end. If his machine decides what is historically accurate, then he decides what the past looked like. And whoever is trusted to author the past is well placed to author the future.
So watch this one with scepticism – not because AI cannot make images, it plainly can, but because “historically accurate” is a claim about truth. And truth is exactly what a machine trained on the average of everything cannot give you. It is also exactly, in this case, what its owner would most like to define.

MacBook Neo helped Apple move against the global PC market in the second quarter of 2026, delivering double-digit Mac shipment growth while most leading computer manufacturers sold fewer units than a year earlier.
Preliminary data from IDC estimates that Apple shipped 6.7 million Macs during the quarter, up 10.1% from 6.1 million in Q2 2025. Its worldwide market share rose from 8.5% to 9.9%, placing the company within a fraction of the 10% threshold.
The rest of the industry moved in the opposite direction. Global shipments fell 4.9% year over year to 68.2 million units, ending nine consecutive quarters of growth. A separate Omdia estimate placed the decline at 3.6% and Apple growth at 15.9%, but both research groups identified the same pattern: the Mac gained ground while established Windows PC vendors contracted or remained flat.
IDC directly connected the Apple increase with the arrival of its lowest-priced notebook. MacBook Neo began shipping in March, giving the model its first complete quarter of retail availability between April and June.
MacBook Neo entered the market as an alternative for buyers previously priced out of the Mac lineup.
The 13-inch notebook launched at $599 with an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, a Liquid Retina display and up to 16 hours of video playback. It also brought macOS, Apple Intelligence and integration with the iPhone ecosystem into a price range commonly occupied by mainstream Windows laptops and Chromebooks.
That positioning attracted students, families and first-time Mac customers who did not need the performance or display technology of a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. The four-color aluminum design also gave the entry model a more recognizable identity than the older Mac notebooks that frequently remained on sale through discounts.
IDC had already identified the computer as an unusual source of strength when it revised its notebook forecast earlier in 2026. Demand exceeded initial expectations in several markets, and reported inventory shortages appeared shortly after the March launch.
The effect became much more visible in Q2. MacBook Neo was available for the entire three-month period, allowing Apple to increase production, expand retail distribution and serve customers who could not obtain the computer during its first weeks.
The entry model also widened the Mac lineup without replacing the MacBook Air. Buyers seeking more memory, faster ports, longer wireless web use or additional external-display support could continue moving toward the M5-powered Air, while the less expensive machine handled education, office work, web browsing and communication.
That separation allowed Apple to reach lower price points without reducing the value of its premium notebooks.

Apple remained the fourth-largest traditional PC vendor, but its performance contrasted sharply with the companies above it.
Lenovo retained first place with 16.6 million units and 24.4% market share. Its shipments declined 2.1% from the previous year.
HP experienced the steepest drop among the top five, falling 9% to 13 million units. Dell shipped 9.3 million computers, representing a 5% decline. Asus remained nearly flat at 5 million units, up only 0.2%.
Manufacturers outside the five largest brands collectively suffered a 10.5% contraction, indicating that weaker demand and component inflation placed even more pressure on smaller companies.
The figures measure shipments into distribution channels or directly to end users, not confirmed retail purchases by individual consumers. A manufacturer can therefore record shipment growth while some inventory remains unsold in stores or warehouses.
MacBook Neo demand appears to have been strong enough to support Apple production increases rather than simply filling channels. The company reportedly doubled its annual production target after the initial response, although later quarters will reveal how much of Q2 reflected lasting demand rather than launch-period enthusiasm.
Apple also benefits from operating at a scale that provides leverage with memory, storage and semiconductor suppliers. Smaller PC brands face greater difficulty securing components at competitive prices when shortages intensify.
The Q2 contraction arrived after manufacturers and commercial customers accelerated purchases during late 2025 and early 2026.
Buyers expected memory and storage prices to rise, encouraging some businesses to replace computers earlier than planned. Vendors also increased inventories while components remained available.
That activity supported nine quarters of market growth but borrowed demand from later periods. Once the early purchases were completed, the industry faced a more difficult combination of expensive components, cautious consumers and elevated retail prices.
The memory shortage is closely connected to the AI infrastructure boom. Chipmakers are dedicating more production capacity to high-bandwidth memory used by data center accelerators, limiting the supply of conventional DRAM needed for personal computers.
IDC expects little relief before the end of 2027 or early 2028. The research company forecasts an 11.3% decline in worldwide PC shipments across 2026, with the fourth quarter potentially falling 20% from the previous year.
Computer revenue may not decline at the same pace. Manufacturers have raised prices faster than shipments have fallen, allowing them to collect more money from fewer units.
That strategy creates another problem. Retailers and distributors can become trapped with expensive inventory if customers refuse the new prices, forcing promotions or production reductions later.
MacBook Neo initially softened that pressure by giving Apple a new product near the bottom of the notebook market. Its original $599 price made the Mac competitive with midrange Windows machines at the moment many rivals were becoming more expensive.

The strongest Q2 MacBook Neo shipments were recorded while most customers could still buy the computer at its introductory price.
Apple raised the U.S. starting price to $699 in late June as memory and storage costs affected the Mac and iPad lineups. The education price remained at $599, preserving the original offer for eligible students and educators.
A $100 increase changes the comparison with discounted Windows notebooks and places the entry model closer to older MacBook Air configurations available through third-party retailers.
Apple must now determine whether the appeal came primarily from the low launch price or from the combination of macOS, battery life, design and iPhone integration.
The company remains better positioned than many rivals to absorb supply disruption, negotiate long-term component agreements and promote several notebooks at different prices. MacBook Neo also uses an iPhone-class A18 Pro processor rather than an M-series chip, providing another way to manage silicon costs and production capacity.
IDC expects the full PC market to deteriorate during the second half of 2026. Apple will enter that period with almost 10% worldwide share, but the September quarter will be the first to measure MacBook Neo demand almost entirely at the higher $699 retail price.

ChatGPT Health is returning with substantially wider access, giving more iPhone users the option to connect information from Apple Health directly to the AI assistant.
The expansion follows a limited test introduced in January. OpenAI is now gradually making the dedicated Health experience available to eligible ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro users in the United States who are at least 18 years old.
Despite the close Apple connection, this is not a feature created by Apple or built directly into the Health app. OpenAI operates the service through ChatGPT, while Apple Health serves as one of the sources users can voluntarily connect.
Once permission is granted, ChatGPT can examine selected health and fitness information stored on iPhone, including activity, sleep, workouts and other measurements collected by compatible apps and devices. Users can then ask questions about changes over time without manually exporting records or uploading screenshots during every conversation.

ChatGPT Health originally appeared as a limited early-access experience for a small group of testers. The expanded rollout replaces that narrow availability with support for eligible adult users across the United States, although OpenAI says access may take several weeks to reach every account.
The feature works on the ChatGPT website and iOS app, but connecting Apple Health requires an iPhone. Users also need a recent version of the ChatGPT app before the Health option appears in the sidebar or More menu.
Apple Health is only one part of the system. ChatGPT can also connect to supported medical-record portals, One Medical and Function Health. Bringing those sources together allows the assistant to answer questions using a broader personal context than activity data alone.
A user could ask how sleep duration has changed across several weeks, whether workout frequency declined after a schedule change or how recent laboratory results compare with earlier tests. ChatGPT can also help organize questions before a medical appointment or summarize changes found across connected records.
Information from third-party fitness services can reach ChatGPT through Apple Health when those apps already share their data with the iPhone database. That may include measurements from platforms such as Garmin, Oura, Whoop, Strava and MyFitnessPal, depending on which categories each service makes available.
Not every proprietary score transfers. An app may calculate its own readiness, recovery or sleep score without writing that exact result into Apple Health. ChatGPT can only use the information made available through the connected source and approved by the user.
After synchronization, health information can inform responses throughout ChatGPT rather than remaining limited to conversations opened from the Health tab. The assistant normally asks for permission before using connected information, and users can also add “@Health” to a prompt when they specifically want a response based on their records.

The appeal of the integration comes from turning a large collection of measurements into questions expressed in ordinary language.
Apple Health can already organize trends, highlights, medications, laboratory results and activity records. ChatGPT adds a conversational layer capable of comparing those categories or explaining them in a more personalized format.
Someone preparing for an annual physical could ask for a summary of meaningful changes since the previous appointment. A runner might request a comparison between training volume, sleep and resting heart rate. Another user could ask which information deserves discussion with a clinician after receiving new laboratory results.
That does not make ChatGPT a doctor. OpenAI says the feature is intended to support medical care rather than diagnose conditions or recommend treatment. Urgent symptoms and emergencies still require professional assistance.
The distinction is especially important because health data can appear more conclusive than it is. A change in heart rate, sleep or activity may have several explanations that cannot be determined from an iPhone record alone. Wearables can identify patterns, but they do not automatically reveal the medical cause behind them.
ChatGPT may help users notice relationships and prepare better questions. It should not be treated as the final authority on whether a symptom is harmless, whether medication should change or whether professional care is unnecessary.
The service is also read-only. ChatGPT can examine approved Apple Health information but cannot alter the original records stored on iPhone. It cannot add a diagnosis, change a medication list or write new measurements back into the Health app.
Users retain control over which Apple Health categories are shared. Someone may allow access to steps, workouts and sleep while withholding reproductive health, medications or other sensitive information.
That selective approach may be more appropriate than approving every category simply because the option is available. A useful response does not always require a complete health history.

Connecting Apple Health to ChatGPT creates a different privacy relationship from using health features entirely within the Apple ecosystem.
Apple designs the Health app around on-device protections and user-controlled permissions. ChatGPT Health requires selected information to synchronize with OpenAI systems so the company can analyze it and generate personalized responses.
OpenAI says connected Apple Health data, medical records and conversations using that information are not used to train its foundation models or target advertising. The company also applies additional encryption and isolation protections to health information.
Users can disconnect Apple Health at any time. OpenAI says synchronized data from the disconnected source will be deleted from its systems within 30 days.
Previous conversations are handled separately. Information already included in ChatGPT conversation history remains until those chats are deleted, even after the Apple Health connection is removed.
Memory introduces another consideration. Conversations using Health can create memories when ChatGPT memory is enabled, although OpenAI says memories are not generated directly from synchronized health data. Temporary Chat or separate project memory can reduce how much personal context continues across future conversations.
The new Health experience should also not be confused with the existing ChatGPT integration inside Apple Intelligence. Siri and Writing Tools can use ChatGPT for certain requests without requiring the dedicated ChatGPT app or a connected account.
ChatGPT Health is a separate OpenAI service with its own account, permissions, privacy controls and health-data connections. Using ChatGPT through Siri does not automatically give OpenAI access to Apple Health.
That separation gives users a meaningful choice. They can continue keeping health information inside Apple apps, share only selected categories with ChatGPT or connect medical records for a more comprehensive view.
The expanded rollout makes one of the most personal databases on iPhone available to conversational AI. Its usefulness will depend not only on the quality of the answers, but also on whether users understand exactly which information they are sharing and where it goes after leaving the device.

MacBook Air Flexgate is an unofficial name increasingly used for screen problems that appear when the laptop lid reaches a particular angle. The display may flicker, lose its backlight, show colored lines or turn completely black even though the computer continues running.
The term can be misleading. The original Flexgate controversy involved certain 13-inch MacBook Pro models from 2016, not MacBook Air. Apple later created a display backlight service program for eligible MacBook Pro units after determining that a small percentage could develop uneven lighting or lose the backlight entirely.
No equivalent MacBook Air repair program currently appears among Apple active service programs. Individual Air models can still experience failures involving display cables, connectors, backlight components or the LCD panel, but that does not establish one confirmed defect affecting every generation.
Owners therefore need to identify the symptom before assuming the screen has the same problem associated with the earlier MacBook Pro.
MacBook Air Flexgate usually refers to damage or wear affecting the thin cables carrying display information and power between the computer body and the screen.
These cables must flex every time the lid opens or closes. When a cable, connector or bonded section begins failing, the problem may initially appear only at certain screen angles. Moving the lid can restore the image temporarily, followed by another blackout when the display opens farther.
The original MacBook Pro issue became associated with a short backlight cable integrated into the display assembly. Repeated movement could place stress on the cable, producing a stage-light effect along the bottom of the screen before the backlight eventually stopped working.
MacBook Air designs also use compact display connections routed through the hinge area, but the internal construction differs across generations. A cable-related Air failure should not automatically be treated as evidence that Apple reused the exact defective MacBook Pro component.
The distinction matters during repair. A technician may use “Flexgate” as convenient shorthand, while the written diagnosis may identify a damaged display cable, backlight circuit, panel connection or complete display assembly.
Customers should ask which component has failed and how the conclusion was reached rather than accepting the nickname as the diagnosis.

Reports of angle-dependent MacBook Air display failures most commonly involve Retina models introduced from 2018 onward.
The 2018 and 2019 Intel MacBook Air share a thin Retina design with display connections running through the hinge area. The early 2020 Intel version and late 2020 M1 MacBook Air use closely related chassis designs, making symptoms across these machines look similar even when the failed component is not identical.
Owners describe displays that work when opened slightly but flicker, develop lines or turn black when moved toward a normal viewing position. Some units recover after the lid is partly closed, strongly suggesting a physical connection affected by movement.
The M1 MacBook Air receives particular attention because it sold in large numbers and remained available for several years. A greater number of public complaints does not necessarily mean it has a higher failure rate, but many of these computers are now old enough for wear, accidental pressure and repeated hinge movement to become relevant.
The redesigned M2 MacBook Air introduced in 2022 uses a different enclosure and display assembly. M3 and later versions continue that flatter design. Individual screen and cable failures can occur, but there is no established evidence of a single Flexgate defect covering those generations.
Older wedge-shaped MacBook Air models released before the 2018 Retina redesign can also develop display cable problems. They are not normally included in the Flexgate discussion because their screen architecture predates the MacBook Pro controversy and their failures follow different repair patterns.
Apple menu > About This Mac
The model year and screen size are more useful than the date the Mac was purchased. Retailers may sell an earlier generation long after its original release.
A strong Flexgate-style symptom is a display that changes immediately when the lid moves.
The screen may operate normally below a particular angle, then flicker or disappear as it opens farther. Returning the lid to the previous position restores the picture without restarting the Mac.
Uneven illumination along the bottom edge can point toward a backlight connection. Several bright or dark patches resembling stage lights are especially associated with cable or backlight distribution problems.
A completely dark screen may still contain a faint image. Shining a flashlight toward the display in a dark room can sometimes reveal the desktop beneath the failed backlight. This test should be performed gently without pressing against the panel.
Colored vertical lines, black bands or duplicated images can involve the display data connection, but they may also indicate panel damage. Lines that remain unchanged at every lid angle are less characteristic of a flex-related failure.
Cracks do not always appear on the outer glass. Pressure from a webcam cover, keyboard protector, plug, pen or other object left between the keyboard and display can damage the internal LCD while leaving the surface relatively smooth.
Liquid exposure may create lines, discoloration or intermittent operation around the hinge and display connectors. In those cases, repeatedly opening the lid can spread contamination or worsen damaged connections.
An external monitor provides one of the most useful tests. When the external image remains normal while the built-in screen fails, the graphics processor is probably still generating the picture correctly. Attention then moves toward the internal display assembly, cable or connector.
A screenshot can provide another distinction. Capture the screen while the fault is visible, then inspect the file on another device or external monitor. When the screenshot looks normal, the problem is likely occurring after macOS generates the image.
![]()
Back up the Mac as soon as an intermittent display problem begins. A screen that works at one angle today may become completely unusable after another cable movement.
Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the lid to demonstrate the fault. Each movement can place further stress on an already damaged connection.
Record a short video showing the display at different angles. Intermittent failures can disappear when a Mac reaches a repair counter, and clear documentation helps the technician reproduce the condition.
Apple Diagnostics may identify some hardware problems, although a clean result does not rule out a damaged display cable. Testing in macOS Recovery or during startup can help exclude an ordinary application problem.
Apple and authorized providers commonly replace the complete display assembly when the cable is integrated with the screen. That approach can make an out-of-warranty repair expensive even when the visible fault involves a small cable.
Independent repair specialists may offer component-level cable work for certain models. The quality and durability of those repairs vary considerably, and newer Air displays can require specialized equipment, adhesives and calibration.
Before authorizing work, request a written estimate identifying the model, suspected component, warranty on the repair and whether the replacement display is new, used, refurbished or genuine.
AppleCare+ may reduce the cost when coverage remains active, particularly if the screen shows accidental damage. Standard warranty coverage depends on the diagnosis and whether Apple determines that impact, liquid or external pressure caused the failure.
The current Apple service-program list should also be checked before paying. A MacBook Air display program could be introduced or changed later, while consumer-protection laws may provide additional rights in some countries even after the limited warranty ends.
Owners using the Mac with an external monitor can often continue working while evaluating repair options. FileVault credentials, backups and any essential recovery codes should be confirmed before service because a technician may need to erase, reset or retain the computer during inspection.

CarPlay apps have grown far beyond maps, music and basic messaging. More than 120 popular iPhone apps now offer some form of support for Apple’s in-car platform, giving drivers access to navigation, podcasts, audiobooks, sports, communication, electric vehicle charging, parking, food ordering and newer AI assistants.
Not every compatible app places its full iPhone interface on the dashboard. CarPlay uses simplified layouts, voice controls and restricted features designed to reduce distractions. Some apps show lists and buttons, while others operate mainly through Siri or audio playback.
The larger catalog nevertheless changes what CarPlay can do. It is becoming a controlled extension of the iPhone rather than a small collection of driving utilities.
The first generations of CarPlay concentrated on a small set of familiar activities: choosing a route, making a call, sending a message and playing audio. Those functions remain central, but Apple has gradually opened additional categories to developers.
CarPlay apps can now help drivers find parking, locate fuel, identify EV charging stations, order food for collection and complete certain driving-related tasks. Automakers can also build apps that control supported vehicle features without forcing the driver to leave the CarPlay interface.
Apple continues to limit which app categories qualify. A social network, game or ordinary shopping app cannot simply reproduce its iPhone screen on the dashboard. Developers must use Apple’s CarPlay frameworks and present only functions considered suitable for the car.
The approach explains why the available catalog can feel both extensive and restrained. More than 120 apps may be compatible, but the dashboard does not become a crowded copy of the App Store.

Apple Maps is built directly into CarPlay and provides turn-by-turn guidance, traffic information, estimated arrival times and destination suggestions based on information from the iPhone.
Drivers can also choose popular alternatives including Google Maps and Waze. Each service brings a different combination of traffic data, route preferences, incident reporting and familiar saved locations.
Other navigation and travel options include HERE WeGo, TomTom GO Navigation, Sygic GPS Navigation, Gaia GPS and specialist apps designed for trucks, motorcycles or outdoor routes.
The strongest choice usually comes down to habit and regional coverage. A driver already using Google Maps or Waze on iPhone can continue using saved destinations and preferences inside the car. Apple Maps benefits from tighter system integration, including Siri requests, Calendar suggestions and Apple Watch directions.
CarPlay allows several navigation apps to appear in the Dashboard layout, where mapping can share the screen with media controls and other useful information.
Audio remains the largest CarPlay app category because it suits an environment where users should spend as little time as possible looking at the screen.
Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, Tidal and Pandora provide access to large music libraries. Radio services such as TuneIn, iHeartRadio and SiriusXM add live stations, news, sports and talk programming.
Podcast listeners can use Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Castro and Spotify. Audiobook options include Apple Books, Audible, Audiobooks.com and Bookmate.
The CarPlay versions usually emphasize large buttons, recent listening, saved libraries and voice search. More detailed account management remains on the iPhone.
Siri can start playback without requiring users to browse through several menus. The experience is safer and often faster when the request includes the service and content, such as asking Siri to play a specific playlist through Apple Music or Spotify.
![]()
Messages has long allowed CarPlay users to hear incoming texts and dictate replies through Siri. Third-party messaging services have expanded the same general idea.
WhatsApp now offers a fuller CarPlay experience that can display recent chats, calls and favorite contacts while keeping message composition centered on voice. Other supported communication apps include Telegram and selected business messaging services, depending on region and app version.
CarPlay does not display long text conversations like an iPhone. Siri reads messages aloud, and users can dictate a response. Visual elements remain limited so the dashboard does not become a scrolling chat screen.
Phone and supported calling apps also provide simplified access to contacts, recent calls and favorites. Meeting services can support audio participation, but video remains unavailable while driving.
AI assistants represent one of the newest CarPlay app categories. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok have introduced CarPlay support, allowing drivers to interact through voice without handling the iPhone.
These apps can answer general questions, explain subjects, brainstorm ideas or continue voice conversations. Their usefulness in a car is different from navigation or music. They provide a hands-free knowledge interface during a commute or long trip.
Google Meet and other communication apps have also expanded their in-car presence, emphasizing audio conversations rather than video.
AI responses should not replace directions, emergency information or vehicle warnings. They can also produce inaccurate answers, particularly when asked about rapidly changing road conditions. Apple Maps, official traffic services and the vehicle’s own systems remain the appropriate sources for driving decisions.
The arrival of AI assistants still marks a meaningful expansion. CarPlay is no longer limited to commands with predefined outcomes. Drivers can now hold longer spoken interactions through supported services.
Practical travel apps can reduce the need to handle an iPhone after arriving near a destination.
Parking services can help locate garages, compare availability or start a parking session. Availability varies by city, but apps from services such as SpotHero, EasyPark and ParkWhiz may offer CarPlay functions in supported markets.
Fueling apps can guide drivers to compatible stations and, in some cases, prepare or authorize payments. EV charging apps can locate chargers, show connector availability and begin navigation to a selected station.
ChargePoint, PlugShare, Electrify America and other charging networks provide different levels of CarPlay integration. Drivers should confirm that their preferred service supports the platform in their country and app version.
Food-ordering support is more restricted. Compatible apps are designed around quick pickup tasks rather than browsing complete menus while the vehicle is moving.
![]()
Sports apps are also finding a place in the car. Apple Sports and selected third-party services can provide scores or spoken updates without requiring drivers to follow a live visual feed.
Audio broadcasters already make sports a major part of CarPlay through radio and podcast services. Dedicated sports support makes it easier to reach a favorite team or competition directly.
Driving-task apps can handle functions such as recording mileage, managing road trips or communicating with fleet systems. These experiences are generally built for narrow purposes and use simplified controls.
Automaker apps form another category. Depending on the vehicle, they can expose controls for radio stations, climate functions, drive modes or other systems through CarPlay. Support is determined by the manufacturer and may differ between models.
Compatible apps installed on the iPhone normally appear in CarPlay automatically. Users can decide which ones remain visible and change their order.
Settings > General > CarPlay > select the vehicle > Customize
Apps can be added, removed or rearranged from this screen. Removing an app from the CarPlay layout does not uninstall it from the iPhone.
An app may not appear when its developer has not enabled CarPlay support, the feature is unavailable in the region or the app needs to be updated. Some services also require an active subscription or account.
The safest layout keeps frequently used navigation and audio apps near the first page. Less essential services can remain farther back or be removed to reduce dashboard clutter.
The value of 120 CarPlay apps is not having 120 icons inside the car. It is having a useful service available when a particular trip requires it.
A daily commute may involve only Maps, Music and Messages. A road trip may add charging, parking, audiobooks and weather information. A workday could involve audio meetings and mileage tracking.
CarPlay’s restrictions remain part of its appeal. Apps are expected to simplify their interfaces, support voice interaction and limit detailed visual tasks. The system should reduce the temptation to use the iPhone rather than reproduce every distraction on a larger screen.
As iOS 27 expands capabilities for audio, communication, navigation and driving-task apps, the catalog is likely to keep growing. The more useful evolution will be deeper integration with the Dashboard, Siri and vehicle controls—not simply another row of icons.

Acapulco Imagen Awards recognition has given Apple TV’s bilingual comedy one more victory after its fourth and final season. The series leads the 41st Annual Imagen Awards with 13 nominations, placing its cast, directors, music team and production among the year’s most celebrated examples of Latino creative work.
The Imagen Foundation announced the nominations Thursday as part of its annual program recognizing Latino talent and representation across film, television, music, documentaries and digital media. Acapulco received more nominations than any other series, including recognition for Best Comedy Series and multiple acting and directing performances.
The awards organization also announced that actor, filmmaker, producer and musician Andy Garcia will receive its Lifetime Achievement Award. Garcia is separately nominated for his supporting performance in Landman, giving the ceremony another connection between a career-spanning honor and current screen work.
For Apple TV, the nominations extend the life of a series that completed its run in September 2025. Acapulco may have checked out of Las Colinas, but the Imagen Awards are giving the resort one more crowded week.
The 13 nominations show how widely the Imagen Foundation recognized the series rather than concentrating only on its lead actors.
Acapulco is nominated for Best Comedy Series, while Oscar Almengor and Santiago Limón both received Best Director nominations. Javier Nuño and Joe Rodríguez were recognized for Best Music Supervision for Film or Television.
Enrique Arrizon and Camila Perez are both nominated in the Best Actor — Comedy category. Although the category name uses “Actor,” the Imagen Foundation placed performers of different genders together in the 2026 comedy field.
The supporting categories gave Acapulco an especially strong presence. Eugenio Derbez, Fernando Carsa, Carlos Corona and Cristo Fernández received Best Supporting Actor — Comedy nominations. Vanessa Bauche and Keyla Monterroso Mejia are nominated for Best Supporting Actress — Comedy.
That distribution reflects the ensemble structure that allowed Acapulco to run for four seasons. The series used Máximo Gallardo’s memories as its entry point, but Las Colinas worked because the hotel was filled with characters whose ambitions, friendships and disasters could carry stories of their own.
The show’s visual identity often received attention first. Its bright colors, resort setting and polished 1980s design made it easy to recognize within seconds. The Imagen nominations reach beyond that appearance and recognize the performances, direction and music that gave the setting its emotional rhythm.

The fourth season returned to Las Colinas with two connected timelines. In the present day, Máximo worked to restore the hotel before its reopening. In 1986, his younger self tried to protect Las Colinas after a competing resort claimed the top position in Acapulco’s annual hotel rankings.
That structure allowed the series to close the distance between the ambitious young employee played by Arrizon and the successful older man played by Derbez. The final episodes had to complete character relationships, resolve the hotel’s future and explain how youthful choices shaped the life Máximo later built.
The Imagen nominations suggest the final season avoided becoming a farewell built only around nostalgia. Its actors remained competitive across several categories, and both nominated directors received recognition for guiding individual parts of the closing chapter.
Acapulco also maintained its bilingual identity throughout the run. English and Spanish were not treated as occasional flavor or a translation exercise. They reflected the characters, workplace and cultural setting. That helped the series reach an international audience without removing the Mexican identity at its center.
For Apple TV, that combination provided a comedy that could travel globally while remaining tied to a specific place and community.
Acapulco delivered Apple TV’s largest Imagen Awards presence, but it was not the service’s only nominated production.
Pluribus received a nomination for Best Drama Series, while Carlos-Manuel Vesga was nominated for Best Supporting Actor — Drama. The Morning Show earned nominations for director Miguel Arteta and supporting actor Nestor Carbonell.
Peter Dager of Stick joined Carbonell in the supporting comedy category, while Mariana Treviño received a Best Supporting Actress — Comedy nomination for the same series. Isabella Gomez was recognized for Shrinking, and Aimee Carrero received a nomination for Your Friends & Neighbors.
Apple’s animated series also appeared in the youth category, with WondLa and Wonder Pets: In the City both nominated for Best Youth Programming. Harvey Guillén received a Best Voice-Over Actor nomination for Shape Island.
The broader list reinforces Apple TV’s ability to attract Latino performers and creators across genres rather than through one designated cultural title. Drama, workplace comedy, animation and mystery all contributed to the service’s presence.
Acapulco remains the centerpiece because its 13 nominations represent recognition of an entire production, not a single breakout performance.

Andy Garcia’s Lifetime Achievement Award gives the ceremony a different scale. His career has moved through major studio films, independent productions, television, directing, producing and music over several decades.
Garcia became widely known through films including The Untouchables, Internal Affairs, The Godfather Part III and Ocean’s Eleven. His performance as Vincent Mancini in The Godfather Part III earned him an Academy Award nomination, while later roles allowed him to move between crime drama, comedy, family stories and television.
His Imagen recognition also reflects a career shaped by Cuban American identity without limiting him to one type of role. Garcia has frequently spoken about cultural representation, creative ownership and the difficulty of bringing Latino-centered stories through the traditional Hollywood system.
The Lifetime Achievement Award arrives while Garcia remains active rather than functioning as a retirement tribute. His nomination for Landman places him directly inside the current awards field he is being asked to help represent.
That combination suits the Imagen Foundation’s mission. The honor recognizes longevity, but it also connects Garcia’s career with the actors, directors and producers building the next generation of Latino entertainment.
Acapulco ended after four seasons, which makes the scale of its Imagen recognition especially satisfying. The series did not need a fifth season announcement to extend its cultural presence. Its final production year generated enough work to lead an entire awards field.
The show also leaves Apple TV with a useful model for international programming. Acapulco was local without being narrow, bilingual without turning language into a gimmick and colorful without allowing its visual style to replace character development.
Its 13 nominations cover the exact areas that sustained that model: acting, direction, music and the series as a whole. The result is less like one last souvenir from Las Colinas and more like a full luggage cart.
Winners of the 41st Annual Imagen Awards will be announced during the ceremony in August. Acapulco will arrive with the largest number of chances, while Andy Garcia receives an honor that extends far beyond one performance or season.
The hotel may have closed its final television chapter, but the Imagen Awards have found 13 reasons to reopen the doors.
