NASAโsย X-59ย Aircraftย Flies Supersonic for First Time

NASAโsย experimentalย X-59ย aircraftย markedย a major milestoneย Friday,ย Juneย 5,ย when itย flew faster than the speed of sound for the first time,ย setting the stage forย demonstratingย its quiet supersonic capabilitiesย later this year.ย
NASA test pilot Jim โClueโ Lessย took offย and landedย at Edwards Air Force Baseย in California, reaching a top speed ofย approximatelyย Machย 1.1ย (713ย mph)ย and altitude ofย 43,400 feet.ย Theย X-59โsย flight began atย 11:08ย a.m.ย PDTย and lasted 81ย minutes,ย withย the team focusing on flying qualitiesย atย both subsonic and then supersonic speeds.ย ย
In the coming days, we expect to take the next step and push to Mach 1.4

โX-59 is getting ready for its quiet supersonic debut. Since the aircraftโs first flight on Oct. 28, 2025, the team has made tremendous progress,ย flyingย 16ย timesย in the last 90 days and getting into a steady test rhythm. In the coming days, we expect to take the next step and push to Mach 1.4,โ said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman โIโm grateful to the NASA team and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works for their help getting us to this point, and I hope this is the first of many collaborations as we rebuild NASAโs X-plane portfolio.โย
The X-59 is designed to flyย atย supersonicย speedsย while creating only a quiet thump instead of a loud sonic boom.ย For this flight, aย NASA Fโ15 chase plane flew nearby toย monitorย the Xโ59.ย Theย loud sonic booms fromย the F-15ย obscuredย any sound made by the X-59.ย ย
โThe X-59โs first supersonic flight is a testament to Americaโs enduring leadership in science, engineering, and aerospace innovation,โ said Michael Kratsios,ย Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy.ย โThis achievement comes as the Trump Administration continues work to unleash supersonic flight and enable American ingenuity.โย
Thisย first supersonicย flight isย aย significantย milestone, butย anย eventย evenย more critical toย the mission is upcoming. In just days, theย aircraftย is expected to makeย its firstย โmission conditionsโ flight, reaching aย cruising speed of Mach 1.4 (925 mph) and altitude of approximately 55,000 feet. The X-59ย alsoย will beย accompanied by a chase planeย for this flight.ย ย

Thisย speed andย altitudeย areย theย baseย conditions for the X-59 when it will eventually fly over several U.S. communities enabling NASA to gather data about how peopleย mayย perceive itsย quiet thump.ย NASA will share this dataย with U.S. and international regulators to helpย establishย newย data-driven noise standardsย toย enable a futureย viableย market forย supersonic commercial flight over land.ย
For the last several months, theย X-59ย has beenย participatingย in an ongoing series of flights where the plane has beenย flying at a wide range of speeds and altitudesย โย a process known as envelope expansion.ย These tests are the firstย phase of the X-59โs flight testing. They areย focused on performanceย and involve chase plane monitoring.ย Whenย theย aircraftย completes thisย phaseย it will enter another,ย focused on its sound profileย in orderย toย verifyย its quietย thump capability.ย ย
The X-59 is the centerpiece of NASAโsย Quesst mission, which aims toย demonstrateย quiet supersonic flightย and help enable commercial supersonic flight over land worldwide.ย These advancements will helpย travelersย reach their preferred destinations faster,ย spending less time in the air.ย
Throughย Quesstโsย development of the X-59, NASAย alsoย willย deliver design tools and technology for quiet supersonic airliners that will achieve the high speedsย desiredย by commercial operators withoutย disturbingย people on the ground. NASA willย validateย design tools through ground and flight testing,ย providingย U.S.ย aircraftย manufacturers the ability to explore new quiet supersonic concepts,ย andย provide them withย confidence that their resultingย designsย will meetย quiet flightย requirements.ย ย
