Microsoft agreed to a set of safety and privacy principles for AI in schools a week after two major school systems announced a ban on student-facing AI.

In a new agreement with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the second-largest teachers union in the US, and its New York City affiliate the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), Microsoft committed to ten principles that can be contractually enforced by school districts that adopt them. The terms include pledging not to train AI models on student or educator data, limiting the amount of data Microsoft collects in the first place and disclosing to families how its tools work in plain …

Apple’s John Ternus era begins: ‘It is great to be here’

9 September 2026 at 18:02

Apple's latest product event began with something the company hasn't seen in more than a decade: a new CEO at the helm. And he got a standing ovation.

"First of all, thank you, it is great to be here," John Ternus said as he opened Wednesday's event excited about Apple's future in what is his first product launch since succeeding Tim Cook as chief executive. "I think you're gonna like what you're gonna see," he said.

The remarks offer an early glimpse at how Ternus plans to present himself as he settles into a role long defined by his predecessor and steers one of the world's most closely watched companies.

Ocarina of Time remake physical preorders are $10 off at Walmart

Nintendo announced a variety of new titles at its September livestream, but among the most talked-about is the remastered The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2. Walmart has the physical copy of the upcoming game available for preorder for just $59.88, which is $10 lower than the physical price elsewhere, and the same as the digital price. The game officially releases on November 5th, 2026, and should ship in time to reach you on launch day.

The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (Switch 2)

Where to Buy:

The remastered title has been completely overhauled graphically, with all the shadows, details, and improved physics you would expect from a modern title. There are new quality of life improvements too, like a free camera for getting a better look at those revamped environments, and a mechanic called “Threads of Time” that helps you find your next objective. Perhaps the most shocking addition is that Link now has a dedicated jump button. In the original game, there was no way to make Link jump, outside of automatically leaping when you run off a ledge.

Other deals to consider

  • The Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite is on sale for $49.99 at Amazon, $40 lower than the list price. This wired gaming mouse features a grid of 12 buttons on the left side, which can slide to fit different hand sizes. The extra buttons are great for MMO players in particular, though it’s also worthwhile for other games that have a lot of key bindings you’d prefer to more easily access. I have a similar gaming mouse and use it to keep all of my spells close at hand while playing World of Warcraft.
  • Amazon and Walmart have the JBL Live Beam 3 discounted to $129.99, an $80 discount from their list price, and close to their all-time low from Prime Day. These unique earbuds feature a 1.45-inch touchscreen on the charging case, letting you quickly check connectivity and battery level at a glance, or adjust your equalizer profile without pulling out your phone. They also have active noise cancelation, which isn’t always a given at this price point.
  • You can save a few bucks on the Olight Sphere C at Amazon, bringing the price down to just $12.59. This compact tabletop lamp has a magnetic base, letting it attach to many different surfaces. It also has over 20 lighting modes to choose from, including RGB options, and can run for up to 40 hours on a single charge.

Early users of Dyson's CameraJet are reporting that water is getting into the battery compartment of the newly launched $499.99 electric toothbrush. One user posted on the r/Dyson subreddit that their model "broke within 30 seconds."

The problem appears to stem from the device getting wet, which is a big issue for a toothbrush. In a post earlier this week, a Reddit user in the UK wrote that his unit appeared faulty and then discovered water in the battery compartment. Several responses to both posts indicate the issue is affecting multiple units.

"… a small number of early batches of Dyson CameraJet products may have experienced a componen …

Ternus was previously Apple’s head of hardware engineering, and he spotlighted upcoming hardware launches in his first staff memo as CEO. All eyes will be on Ternus for a big first announcement to kick off the new leadership era at Apple.

Aside from new iPhones, the September 9th event could also include new Apple Watches and AirPods, and we’re keeping our eyes peeled for other possible surprises, like an updated Apple TV or new smart home hardware.

It's not just time for any old Apple event, but one that's expected to usher in a new era for the company. This is the first iPhone keynote to be led by Apple's newly anointed CEO John Ternus, and all signs and rumors have been pointing to it being the one that also debuts a foldable iPhone. Ternus has already billed this as "a huge launch . . . that's going to be phenomenal." What bigger and flashier way to step into the limelight than with a new halo product of an iPhone?

We're also likely to hear about OS updates, Apple Watches, and possibly some AirPods. But this might be an unconventional event in more ways than one. It's also possible …

9 September 2026 at 16:36

In a "rare, positive update" amid the ongoing component shortage, Framework is lowering its RAM prices for some buyers of the Laptop 13 Pro - at least, for now. After increasing the laptop's memory pricing in July, Framework says it "secured a limited quantity of Micron 32GB and 64GB LPCAMM2 memory modules at lower cost," and plans to share the savings:

We are committed to passing on savings whenever we can and keeping computers as accessible as possible in the current environment, so we are rolling out price reductions across both already shipped and a subset of currently pending pre-orders. While these new costs remain above our origina …

Why your Amazon order confirmation emails have become so unhelpful

11 August 2026 at 14:27

Earlier this summer, Amazon customers began noticing that emails related to their online orders looked sparse: Order confirmation emails didn't name specific items anymore, and instead listed only item categories.

"Your Beauty item is confirmed!" an email about my retainer cleaning tablets read. Shoppers have posted other iterations of the redacted emails as well: "Ordered: 1 Hardware item," "Your Drugstore, Shoes, and other items are here!" and "1 Nutrition & Wellness, 1 Wireless Accessories," for example. The emails have clip art-style illustrations of general product categories, and a shopper has to exit their email and go to Amazon to …

The GuliKit ES Max wireless controller on a wooden desk next to a laptop.

GuliKit announced its first wireless controller to use an improved version of the anti-drift tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) thumbsticks featured in its budget-friendly ES Pro that debuted nearly a year ago. Available now for $49.99, the new GuliKit ES Max is more expensive than last year's $29.99 ES Pro, but still cheaper than Nintendo's Switch 2 Pro Controller, while offering more features and functionality without the risk of stick drift that plagued the original Switch.

The TMR thumbsticks in the ES Max don't feature a complete reimagining of the technology but measure stick movement in a slightly different way that improves performa …

Bumble was famously built around exclusively giving women the power to initiate messages in heterosexual matches when it first launched in 2014 - but now the times they are a-changin' for the dating app. Today, Bumble has announced a "global evolution to its signature conversation experience": anyone can now send the first message, and the deadline to respond before the match expires has been extended from 24 hours to a 72-hour window.

"While women making the first move was a radical idea, being women-first was never about prescribing just one way to connect. It was about designing an experience with women's needs in mind to create better o …

Spotify says it won’t recommend music from ‘AI Personas’

11 August 2026 at 14:00
An image showing the AI persona badge on Spotify

Spotify will soon label AI artists and remove their music from your recommendations. The change, which will start rolling out in mid-September, means you'll see an "AI Persona" badge on an artist's profile across the app if they do "not represent a real person."

The music streaming platform will allow artists to disclose that they're an AI persona starting today, but it won't rely solely on self-identification. Spotify says it will use human review and AI tools to determine whether someone's profile, including their name and image, "appears to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities." If Spotify determines that an artist's identity …

Claude will apply invisible watermarks to AI text and images

11 August 2026 at 13:22
The Claude logo on a computer screen on an orange background.

Anthropic has pledged to start marking Claude-generated text and images with machine-readable data, in an effort to comply with European rules for AI transparency. "Generated text will carry embedded watermarks, and generated files will include digitally signed provenance metadata where supported," Anthropic says on a new Claude support page. The changes are invisible to human eyes, but will make it easier for people and online platforms to detect if content was generated by Claude models.

These updates are a future commitment rather than something that will go into effect immediately. New AI labeling and transparency obligations under the …

Joby Aviation announced it was acquiring Dayton, Ohio-based defense firm Resonant Sciences in a $500 million deal, in a bid by the electric aircraft company to expand further into the military industrial complex.

Joby says it expects to finance the deal with $450 million in cash and $50 million in equity. After the deal closes, which is expected in early 2027, Resonant will continue its existing work as Joby's dedicated defense division, the company said. The commercial division will remain focused on air taxis, the first of which are expected to launch later this year.

The deal is the latest example of the fledgling electric aviation in …

The AI takeover of mathematics has begun

11 August 2026 at 12:00
Graphing calculator with the OpenAI logo on the screen

Mathematician James Maynard has spent a lot of time this past year "soul searching." A professor at the University of Oxford and winner of the prestigious Fields Medal, Maynard told The Verge he's been grappling with the future of his field as the traditionally slow-moving discipline hurries to adapt to AI.

Days before we spoke, OpenAI revealed it had produced the solutions to 10 long-standing mathematics problems, some of which had confounded academics for decades. Like generative AI used to produce text and images or propose ideas in science and medicine, the technology learns patterns and connections from the vast amount of material it' …

Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t understand how to live

10 August 2026 at 23:00
Mark Zuckerberg wearing sunglasses

Recently, a man I was rock climbing with told me about how he'd used AI to make a motivational poster for himself, which he'd hung on his bedroom wall: a bear, walking a slackline over a canyon, holding a sign that said, "Do cool shit." I made what I hoped was a polite noise. What reaction was this man looking for? He probably hoped someone, maybe me, would say it was cool or inspiring. It seemed I was not the first person he'd told about this poster. "You know, it's funny," he said to me. "No one ever says anything about it."

I have been thinking about this now for several days. There's a sort of turducken of things that I find off-puttin …

Anker’s travel charger works in almost any country and is down to $20

Anker Nano Travel Adapter
Anker’s Nano Travel Adapter can power up to five devices at once. | Image: Anker

If you’ve got international travel coming up, an adapter is essential for keeping your phone, earbuds, power banks, and other gadgets charged. Anker’s Nano Travel Adapter is one of our picks from our guide to the best gadgets for summer travel because it can charge up to five devices at once, yet it’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It’s also available in black for just $19.99 ($6 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and directly from Anker (with code WS7DV2BNB82J) matching its best price to date.

The Nano’s four built-in sets of prongs should keep you covered in “over 200 countries and regions,” according to Anker. It also features two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports, along with an AC outlet for plugging in a standard wall charger. A single USB-C port delivers up to 20W, which should be enough to get an iPhone 17 to 50 percent in less than 30 minutes. That’s not enough power to charge most laptops, making the USB ports better suited for smaller gadgets like phones, tablets, earbuds, and power banks. You can still charge your laptop, however, by plugging its wall charger into the AC outlet.

What’s more, it’s designed to take up as little space as possible. The adapter’s only an inch thick with its prongs folded in and, at 3.8 ounces, weighs less than a smartphone. Just keep in mind that the Nano doesn’t convert voltage, so you’ll want to make sure gadgets like hair dryers and electric razors support the voltage at your destination before plugging them in.

Bluesky now lets you hide reposts from that annoying person you follow

10 August 2026 at 20:26

Bluesky has added a new feature that lets you hide reposts from a specific person in your feeds. The tool might be helpful if you want to stop seeing reposts from that one person who clogs up your feed with reposts of things you don't care about. If you follow me, I may be that person, I'm sorry. I try not to be.

You can hide reposts from individual users by going to their profile, clicking the three dots button, and selecting the option to "Hide reposts in feeds." (X offers a similar toggle.)

Bluesky also says that it's launching a beta feature that will automatically add post numbers to threads. For long threads, it could be a useful w …
