Apple’s glass-centric Twentieth Anniversary iPhone remains on track for 2027, contradicting Jefferies report

Apple is still moving ahead with a major glass-focused redesign of the iPhone to mark the device’s 20th anniversary next year, Mark Gurman reports for Bloomberg News, citing people familiar with the matter. This direct counters a recent Jefferies report that claimed the project had been canceled based on “supply-chain checks.”

The company plans to introduce the new look on its iPhone Pro models in 2027, Gurman reports. Those devices, known internally as V73 and V74, will feature glass on both the front and back that curves into the sides, sandwiching a thin metal band in the middle. The result is a significantly glassier aesthetic than current iPhones.

Apple’s design team had explored an even more ambitious concept that relied on still more glass in place of metal. That version was abandoned early in development after engineers ran into difficulties joining the glass panels and determined the design could not be manufactured reliably at high volumes.

The confirmation comes after Jefferies analyst Edison Lee reported, based on supply-chain checks, that Apple had scrapped the all-glass plans. Bloomberg News’ sources said the overall product roadmap has not changed, and the glass-centric overhaul for the anniversary Pro models remains intact.

The redesign would represent one of the most significant visual updates to the iPhone since the iPhone X, aligning with long-standing rumors of a near “slab of glass” design for the milestone year.

Apple is already looking ahead to its landmark twentieth anniversary iPhone models, and the latest rumors point to a noticeable jump in screen real estate. According to Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, the company is currently sampling two new display panels: one measuring around 6.4 inches that could land on the iPhone 20 Pro, and a roughly 7-inch panel destined for the larger iPhone 20 Pro Max.

These size increases would apply across the entire anniversary lineup while keeping the same aspect ratio as today’s models. Even more striking is the design direction. The leaker claims the phones may feature a fully borderless look with curves on all four edges, matching earlier reports of micro-curved OLED panels and “liquid glass” displays that create a nearly edge-to-edge visual effect.

A move to 6.4 inches would represent a modest, but meaningful step up from the 6.3-inch displays on the current iPhone 17 Pro and the expected iPhone 18 Pro. Apple last enlarged its premium iPhone screens with the iPhone 16 Pro series in 2024, when the Pro grew from 6.1 to 6.3 inches and the Pro Max expanded from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. The new display rumors build on a Bloomberg News report from last month indicating that Apple had accelerated work on two distinct sizes for the anniversary devices.

Beyond the bigger, more immersive screens, the twentieth anniversary iPhones are expected to pack an impressive set of upgrades, including under-display Face ID, a custom Apple image sensor, haptic buttons, the A21 chip, higher-bandwidth memory, and a pure silicon battery.
‎
MacDailyNews Take: If these reports hold true, next year’s iPhones could deliver one of the most significant design evolutions in years — pairing larger, more immersive displays with a sleek, almost bezel-free aesthetic that pushes the visual boundaries of Apple’s iconic, world-changing iPhone.

Apple testing 7-inch display for its largest-ever Twentieth Anniversary iPhone

Apple is internally prototyping a significantly larger smartphone display, pushing the boundaries of iPhone screen size for its highly anticipated 20th anniversary flagship expected in 2027.

According to reliable Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is testing a display that measures approximately 6.96 inches diagonally. If it enters production, the company would likely market it as a full 7-inch panel for the top-tier iPhone 20 Pro Max. The aspect ratio remains consistent with the current iPhone 17 Pro Max, suggesting the increase comes primarily from reduced bezels and possibly advanced curved-edge technology rather than a drastic redesign of the screen proportions.

This development aligns with earlier reports from Bloomberg News indicating that Apple has been ramping up work on multiple size options for the commemorative 20th anniversary iPhone. Rumors have consistently pointed to a near-borderless design featuring micro-curved OLED panels and “liquid glass” edges for an immersive, almost seamless visual experience.

Context on iPhone Screen Evolution

Apple has been gradually increasing the size of its premium iPhones in recent years:

• The iPhone 16 Pro series (2024) introduced 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, up from 6.1 and 6.7 inches on the prior generation, thanks to slimmer bezels.

• The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models are expected to retain the same dimensions as the current 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch lineup.

The potential jump to a 7-inch display for the 2027 model would represent the largest iPhone screen ever, positioning it firmly in phablet territory and emphasizing the anniversary device as a premium, forward-looking showcase of Apple’s display technology.

Whether this prototype ultimately makes it into the final iPhone 20 Pro Max remains uncertain, as Apple frequently tests multiple configurations before committing to production. However, the rumor marks the first concrete report of a screen size increase specifically tied to the anniversary edition.

MacDailyNews Take: Bring it on!

Apple ramps up vapor chamber orders for foldable iPhone Ultra and Twentieth Anniversary iPhone

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max feature a thermal management system that includes an Apple-designed vapor chamber, delivering exceptional performance.

Apple has significantly boosted its orders for vapor chamber cooling systems, primarily to support production of its highly anticipated first foldable iPhone, according to a Chinese supply chain leaker. The move also points to advanced thermal management in the company’s upcoming Twentieth Anniversary iPhone slated for 2027.

The information comes from the Weibo account “Fixed Focus Digital,” a source that has previously shared details about Apple’s foldable device. The increased orders will first go toward manufacturing the book-style foldable iPhone, internally referred to as the “iPhone Ultra,” which is on track for a September 2026 debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

Apple has reportedly instructed suppliers to prepare around 10 million units of the foldable iPhone for 2026, an increase from earlier projections of 7–8 million. This ramp-up signals strong confidence in the device’s production readiness despite the complexities of its folding mechanism.

Advanced Cooling for a Challenging Form Factor

Fixed Focus Digital previously indicated that the foldable iPhone would feature “impressive” vapor chamber cooling, with Apple “going all out” on its thermal design. This makes sense given the device’s expected thin profile when unfolded (rumored around 4.5–5mm) and the space constraints of a foldable chassis, which could limit traditional heat dissipation options.

Apple first introduced vapor chamber technology in the iPhone 17 Pro models last year. The system uses a small amount of deionized water to efficiently transfer heat away from the powerful A-series chip and spread it across the device’s aluminum frame, helping sustain high performance without thermal throttling.

The same cooling approach is now expected to extend to the foldable iPhone Ultra and potentially the 2027 anniversary iPhones, which are rumored to feature dramatic edge-to-edge displays with glass curving around all four sides for a nearly borderless look.

Broader Context and Timeline

The foldable iPhone is expected to include a 7.8-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch cover screen, an A20 chip, and a Touch ID power button, with pricing likely starting near $2,000. Recent reports confirm that mass production is underway, with key components like OLED panels already in production at Samsung Display.

Meanwhile, Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhones are planned for two sizes similar to the iPhone 18 Pro models. These devices could mark a major redesign, potentially returning to an all-glass enclosure.

MacDailyNews Take: This latest leak aligns with Apple’s aggressive push into new form factors while maintaining the performance and reliability standards users expect from its flagship devices. As the September launch approaches, more details on the iPhone Ultra’s final specifications are likely to emerge from the supply chain.
