Latest macOS beta: What’s new and should you install it?

16 September 2026 at 19:30

Macworld

Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on September 14, 2026, but development hasn’t stopped. Just two days later on September 16, Apple issued the first developer beta of macOS 27.2, beginning testing of the operating system’s next major point update. Yes, that’s macOS 27.2, not macOS 27.1.

The macOS 27.2 beta gives developers and testers early access to Apple’s latest fixes, refinements and any features that weren’t ready for the initial Golden Gate release.

However, as with any beta software, it may introduce bugs, compatibility problems and poorer battery life so we recommend caution if you wish to install it.

Here’s everything you need to know about the latest macOS beta, including what’s new, when the next public beta is likely to arrive and whether you should install it.

What’s the latest macOS beta?

Apple offers two beta streams: a developer beta and a public beta. The public beta allows enthusiasts and early adopters to test upcoming changes before they are released to everyone. You need to join Apple’s Beta Software Program to access it.

The latest Mac beta is macOS 27.2 beta 1, which Apple released to registered developers on September 16, 2026. It arrived two days after the public release of macOS 27 Golden Gate.

The corresponding macOS 27.2 public beta is expected shortly. Public betas usually follow developer betas, although Apple does not guarantee a particular schedule.

macOS 27 Golden Gate beta version tracker

  • Apple released macOS 27.2 Golden Gate Developer Beta on September 16, 2026.
  • The macOS 27.2 Golden Gate Public Beta should be released sometime the same week; new versions are usually released a day or two after the new developer beta.

macOS 26 Tahoe beta: Apple may continue updating macOS 26 Tahoe with security and maintenance releases, but macOS 27 is now the current operating system and the focus of Apple’s beta program.

Should you install the macOS beta?

macOS 27

Apple

Installing the macOS beta lets you test Apple’s next round of features, fixes and refinements before their public release. Most Mac users should remain on the standard version of macOS 27, particularly if they rely on their Mac for work.

Install if…

  • You need to test apps
  • You want early access to new features
  • You have a secondary Mac available

Wait if…

  • This is your primary work machine
  • You rely on niche or specialist software
  • Stability is critical to your workflow

What are the risks of installing beta software?

Installing pre-release software on a primary device carries several risks.

  • System instability: Performance problems, freezes, crashes, and other unexpected behavior are common during beta testing.
  • App failures: Third-party applications may crash, behave unpredictably, or stop working entirely.
  • Hardware strain: Early beta builds can increase battery drain and cause Macs to run hotter than usual.
  • Data loss: Software bugs may corrupt files, and downgrading to a stable version often requires a complete system reset.

Safety precautions and best practices

If you decide to install the beta, take the following precautions:

  • Use a secondary device: Avoid installing beta software on your primary Mac or on any machine used for critical work.
  • Create a full backup: Use Time Machine to create a complete backup before upgrading so you can restore your Mac if something goes wrong. Note that this needs to be a Time Machine backup from before the beta was installed and you will lose anything saved subsequently.
  • Install on a separate volume: Consider installing the beta on a separate volume or external SSD rather than replacing your main operating system.
  • Check storage space: Make sure you have at least 15GB of free storage available before beginning the installation.

How to install the macOS beta

Get Sonoma Beta

Foundry

The process for installing a macOS beta depends on whether you are seeking the Developer Beta or the Public Beta. Apple simplified this process a few years ago, removing the need for a paid developer account to access early builds.

The first step is to join Apple’s beta testing program. We explain how to do that in a separate article.

You will need to register your account either as a public beta tester or as a developer in order to enable beta updates on your Mac.

To install the beta follow these steps:

  1. Back up your Mac: Before installing any pre-release software, it is critical to prepare your Mac to avoid data loss. Beta software is inherently unstable and can cause crashes or app compatibility issues.
  2. Register your account either as a public beta tester or as a developer in order to enable beta updates on your Mac:
For the Public Beta: Visit the Apple Beta Software Program website, sign in with your Apple ID, and agree to the terms.
For the Developer Beta: Register as an Apple Developer on Apple’s website, download the Apple Developer app from the App Store, sign in with your standard Apple ID, and complete the free registration process.
  3. On the Mac where you wish to install the beta, open System Settings and navigate to General > Software Update.
  4. Click the (i) info button next to Beta Updates.
  5. Enable Beta Updates.
  6. The beta will appear as an available upgrade. Select the macOS beta you want to install (e.g., macOS Public Beta or Developer Beta).
  7. Click Upgrade Now to begin the download and installation.

As long as you are a registered developer or enrolled in the public beta program, when the relevant macOS Beta becomes available, it will also show up on your Mac.

Once you are running the beta, the updates will come through to your Mac automatically; you just need to go to Software Update in System Settings and click to install. See How to install macOS.

How to get a free Apple developer account

If you just want a free Apple Developer account so you can access the beta, you can get this via Xcode or the Apple Developer app in iOS. Here’s how to do it via the Apple Developer app on an iPhone:

  1. Get the Apple Developer App from the App Store.
  2. Open the app on your iPhone.
  3. Tap on Account.
  4. Tap on Sign In.
  5. Sign in using your usual Apple ID.

If you wish to actually publish applications to the App Store or receive support, you’ll need to pay $99/£79 per year for a paid account. You can compare the free and paid accounts here.

FAQ

1.

Who can run the macOS beta?

Anyone can run the macOS beta, but to do so, you do need to register for either the developer beta, the public beta, or both.

Apple offers both developer and public beta programs for macOS, enabling all interested users to test pre-release versions of the operating system. While both betas provide early access to new features, they cater to different user profiles based on technical expertise and risk tolerance. Beta software tends to be buggy so the more stable public beta version may be preferable, but even that will not be bug-free.

In the past, the developer beta was only available to developers who had paid to join Apple’s Developer Program (which costs $99/£79). However, for a couple of years now, Apple has opened up the developer beta to registered developers with free developer accounts. We explain how to get a free developer account below.

If you decide you no longer want to run the beta version of macOS read this: How to remove the macOS beta.

2.

macOS public beta vs developer beta

Since 2023, the Developer Beta has been available to anyone who registers as a developer, even if they aren’t a paid-up member of Apple’s Developer Program. As a result, people with a basic free developer account can download the new macOS developer beta (we show you how to register below).

Whether you should download the developer beta if you aren’t a developer is another question. We don’t recommend you install the developer beta if you aren’t a developer. Instead, our recommendation is to use the public beta (the first version of which usually arrives in July).

There are a few differences between the public and developer betas. The public beta is not the same as the beta that is released through the developer program. The public beta typically launches after the developer beta has undergone initial testing and refinement

Developers get updates to their beta first, and possibly more frequently. But you should keep in mind that betas are by nature not stable, and because the public beta comes after the developer beta it could be a little safer to install.

The most significant difference is probably the motive of the testers: Developers usually have the aim of ensuring their apps work when the updated macOS is released to the general public, while public beta testers are essentially helping Apple detect bugs and offering feedback on the features. Because of this, developers may get to test new features not available in the public beta.

If you want to get the public beta the first thing you need to do, if you haven’t already, is join Apple’s beta programs read this for more information: How to become an Apple beta tester.

3.

Is the macOS beta stable?

By its nature, a beta has the potential to be unstable. Therefore, it’s not advised that you install it on a Mac that you rely on. If you have a second Mac that isn’t mission-critical, then install it there. We strongly recommend that you don’t risk all by putting the macOS beta on your primary Mac, especially not in the early days of the beta development.

If you don’t have a second Mac, there are a couple of ways you could run macOS beta on your Mac without running the risk of losing data or finding your Mac stops working:

We discuss the safety of the macOS beta and the risks you might be taking in more detail in a separate article.

4.

How to prepare your Mac for the beta

Update your software: We recommend you have the latest full version of macOS installed, although Apple says that the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility requires macOS 10.8 or later.

Make space: We’d recommend at least 25-30GB of available space because the macOS betas tend to be very large. If you end up requiring more space, read: How to free up space on Mac. Note that we always recommend that you have at least 10% space free on your Mac at any time, so if you don’t have that, expect problems!

Back up: Before you install a beta on your Mac, you should make a backup of your data and files. You can find out how to use Time Machine to back up your Mac. We also have a round-up of suitable backup solutions.

5.

How to send feedback to Apple

Should you come across an error or a bug, you should use the Feedback Assistant app to provide feedback to Apple. Launch the app and follow the appropriate steps, selecting the area about which you’re providing feedback and then any specific sub-area. Then describe your issue in a single sentence, before providing a more detailed description, including any specific steps that reproduce the issue. You’ll also be able to attach other files.

You’ll also have to give permission for the Feedback Assistant app to collect diagnostic information from your Mac.

It won’t always be obvious whether something is a bug or just not as easy to use as you might have hoped. Either way, if your feedback is that something appears to work in an illogical way, Apple will want to know that.

If you are having trouble with a third-party app, you can let Apple know by reporting it through the 3rd-party Application Compatibility category in the Feedback Assistant. However, we’d suggest that you also provide feedback to the app’s developer, who will no doubt be grateful.

6.

Will I be able to update from macOS beta to the final version?

Beta users can move to the finished release once its build is newer than – or equivalent to – the beta installed. Read: How to leave the macOS beta.

7.

Can I talk about the beta publicly?

According to Apple and the license agreement all beta testers must agree to, the beta is “Apple confidential information”. By accepting those terms, you agree not to discuss your use of the software with anyone who isn’t also in the Beta Software Program. That means you can’t “blog, post screenshots, tweet, or publicly post information about the public beta software.”

However, you can discuss any information that Apple has publicly disclosed; the company says that information is no longer considered confidential.

8.

How to downgrade from the macOS beta

You can always revert to an earlier version of macOS, though depending on how you back up, it’s not necessarily a painless process.

Start by making sure the data on your drive is backed up, then erase the drive and install the latest public version of macOS. When you first start up your Mac, you can use the Migration Assistant to import your data from the backup. Here’s a more detailed tutorial on downgrading from the macOS beta and we also have a tutorial on downgrading to an older version of the Mac OS.

9.

Is the beta free to download?

Yes, the macOS beta is free to download for both developers and the general public. Apple offers two distinct tracks for testing pre-release software: the Developer Beta and the Public Beta, both of which are now accessible without a paid subscription.

10.

Can I go back to the stable version?

Yes, you can go back to the stable version of macOS from a beta, but the complexity of the process depends on whether the final version of that software has been released yet.

If you are running macOS 27.2 beta and want to return to the current public release of macOS 27, simply turning off Beta Updates will stop future beta installations, but it will not immediately downgrade the Mac. To return before Apple releases an equivalent public build, you may need to erase the Mac and reinstall macOS, then restore data from a backup made before installing the beta.

11.

Should I install the beta on my main Mac?

Installing a macOS beta on your primary computer is generally not recommended due to the inherent risks of using unfinished software. While beta programs offer early access to new features, they are designed for testing and often contain significant bugs that can disrupt your daily workflow.

12.

Do I need an Apple Developer account to install the beta?

You do not need a paid Apple Developer account to install the macOS beta. While access to developer betas was previously restricted to those paying a $99/£79 annual fee, Apple changed this policy in 2023 to allow anyone with a free developer account to access these builds. Alternatively, you can join the Public Beta program, which is also free and accessible to anyone with a valid Apple ID.

13.

How often are new beta versions released?

New macOS beta versions are typically released every one to two weeks, with the frequency increasing as the final public release date approaches. The beta updates refine features and address bugs identified by testers.

14.

Is the macOS beta safe to install?

The beta is generally safe to test, but it may contain bugs that cause crashes, poor battery life, app compatibility issues, or data loss. Always back up your Mac before installing.

15.

Will my apps work with the macOS beta?

Many apps will work normally, but some third-party software may crash, perform poorly, or not launch at all until developers release updates.

macOS version history: Every macOS and Mac OS X version and the features it brought

macOS is Apple’s operating system for the Mac, in the same way iOS runs on the iPhone and iPadOS runs on the iPad. It provides the user interface and acts as the link between a Mac’s hardware and its software.

All Macs have run macOS – formerly known as Mac OS X – since its debut in 2001. Before that, Apple computers used Mac OS 9. macOS is based on Unix technology developed at NeXT, the company Steve Jobs founded before returning to Apple.

Since its launch on March 24, 2001, macOS has evolved significantly, gaining tighter integration with iOS devices, cloud services, and productivity features such as Time Machine, Quick Look, Exposé, Spaces, and Desktop Stacks.

Below is a complete overview of macOS versions, showing how Apple’s desktop operating system has developed over time, along with the official names and internal codenames used for each release.

FAQ

1.

Which macOS versions are still supported?

Apple provides regular feature and security updates for the current version of macOS and generally continues to issue security updates for the previous two major versions.

As of September 2026, macOS 27 Golden Gate is the current version. Apple also released security updates for macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 15 Sequoia alongside Golden Gate on September 14, 2026.

With the arrival of Golden Gate, macOS Sonoma appears to have dropped out of Apple’s regular support cycle, with its most recent update released in August 2026.

Occasionally Apple releases updates for much older versions of macOS to address specific problems. For example, in February 2026 it issued updates for Big Sur and Catalina to address a certificate issue affecting FaceTime and Messages.

See: How long do Macs and MacBooks last? We also have a full list of which Macs run which versions of macOS here.

2.

How does Apple choose Mac OS X and macOS names?

As you can see from the list above, with the exception of the first OS X beta, all versions of the Mac operating system from 2001 to 2012 were named after big cats, from Cheetah to Panther to the final release, Mountain Lion. But while the public-facing builds were named after big cats, internally, they were named after wines (aside from OS X 10.6 which had no codename).

Even after Apple switched public-facing code names to places in California back in 2013, it carried on naming them after wines internally until 2014. In 2015, Apple decided to change the theme of internal code names from wines to types of apples.

In 2016, Apple took the plunge to unify the branding of its operating systems by rebranding Mac OS X to macOS, which sits nicely alongside iOS, tvOS, and watchOS and paved the way for macOS 11, the successor to Mac OS X, which arrived twenty years after the first beta of Mac OS X.

In 2025, Apple decided to sync up the numbering system between all its operating systems, moving from macOS 14 to macOS 26 to better reflect the year. macOS 26 Tahoe lived most its lifetime as the most recent version in the year 2026 before being replaced with macOS 27 in September 2026.

3.

How do I check my macOS version?

You can tell which version of macOS you are running by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left and choosing About This Mac.

It will clearly show which version of macOS you are running along with the most recent version that your Mac has installed.

If you are looking for help installing macOS read: How to update macOS and Fixes for Macs that won’t update. We can also help with How to install macOS on an unsupported Mac.

4.

Can I run the macOS beta?

You can install a beta version of macOS and test new features that haven’t yet launched. If you want to install the latest beta of macOS read about joining Apple’s beta program.

5.

How can I install the latest version of macOS?

Some Macs will be set to update macOS automatically. If you want your Mac to update automatically follow these steps:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Click on General.
  3. Click on Software Update.
  4. Click on the “i” beside Automatic Updates and make sure that Check for updates, Download new updates when available, and Install macOS updates are selected. macOS Beta: Golden Gate Release Candidate now available

9 September 2026 at 22:17

Macworld

Following its preview at WWDC on June 8, Apple released the first developer beta of macOS 27 Golden Gate, giving developers and Mac users an early look at the next major version of macOS ahead of its expected public release later this month.

Rather than introducing a dramatic redesign, Golden Gate focuses on improving the experience established by macOS 26 Tahoe. The update brings Siri AI, deeper Apple Intelligence integration, smarter search tools, and a range of performance enhancements, while refining some of the more controversial aspects of Tahoe’s Liquid Glass interface.

As with any beta software, early access comes with risks. Bugs, app compatibility issues, and incomplete features are common, particularly in early developer releases. Before installing the macOS beta, it’s worth understanding what’s new, what issues testers are reporting, and whether it’s stable enough for your Mac.

Here’s everything you need to know about the latest macOS beta, including new features, known issues, release dates, and whether it’s worth installing.

What’s the latest macOS beta?

Apple is currently running two macOS beta tracks for developers: the upcoming macOS 27 Golden Gate and updates for the current release, macOS 26 Tahoe.

Apple also runs a public beta, which allows enthusiasts and early adopters to test new features before the final version launches. You need to register for Apple’s public beta to access it.

macOS 27 Golden Gate beta version tracker

  • Apple released the macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta 6 on August 31.
  • Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate Developer Release Candidate on September 9, 2026.
  • Public Beta RC should be released sometime this week; new versions are usually released a day or two after the new developer beta.

macOS 26 Tahoe beta: Apple continues to develop macOS Tahoe through regular point releases.

The beta introduces several significant upgrades.

Siri AI: Apple has redesigned Siri with personal context awareness and the ability to perform multi-step tasks across apps.

Better performance: One of Golden Gate’s goals is improved responsiveness. Early testers report faster app launches, quicker AirDrop transfers, and a generally snappier experience than Tahoe.

Smarter Search: A rebuilt indexing engine powers Spotlight, Mail, and Photos, delivering faster and more relevant search results.

Safari Automation: Safari gains new AI-powered features, including automatic tab grouping and a new “Notify Me” tool that can monitor webpages for changes.

Design refinements: Following criticism of Tahoe’s Liquid Glass design, Apple has refined the interface with improved transparency controls and more consistent window corners.

More Apple Intelligence features: Apple Intelligence is integrated more deeply throughout the system. Improvements include smarter automation, enhanced password management, and natural-language shortcuts. Users can create Shortcuts using plain English, while Calendar can generate events from written requests. Photos also gains AI-powered editing tools, including Spatial Reframing and enhanced cleanup features.

Xcode 27: Xcode 27 ships with the macOS 27 SDK and includes new AI-assisted development tools, including coding assistance and testing features.

See Apple’s developer website for more information about the beta.

Should you install the macOS beta?

What do people think of the macOS beta?

Golden Gate is focused less on introducing dramatic new features and more on refining the experience introduced in macOS Tahoe. Early feedback has been positive about the ways Apple is addressing many of the complaints users had about 2025’s Liquid Glass redesign while also improving overall performance.

Performance: Reports from beta testers both within our team and across the web suggest that Golden Gate feels faster and more responsive. Some users report that even older Macs feel noticeably quicker when running the beta.

Liquid Glass changes: Early testers appear supportive of the updated design. Apple has refined several Liquid Glass elements and introduced greater control over transparency effects.

Siri AI: The biggest addition in Golden Gate is Siri AI. However, support outside Apple’s own apps remains inconsistent. Some testers find Siri AI genuinely useful, while others report reliability issues.

Note that this need to be a Time Machine backup from before the beta was installed and you will lose anything saved subsequently.

  2. Registered your account either as a public beta tester or as a developer in order to enable beta updates on your Mac:
For the Public Beta: Visit the Apple Beta Software Program website, sign in with your Apple ID, and agree to the terms.
For the Developer Beta: Register as an Apple Developer on Apple’s website, download the Apple Developer app from the App Store, sign in with your standard Apple ID, and complete the free registration process.
  3. On the Mac where you wish to install the beta, open System Settings and navigate to General > Software Update.
  4. Click the (i) info button next to Beta Updates.
  5. Enable Beta Updates.
  6. The beta will appear as an available upgrade. Select the macOS beta you want to instal (e.g., macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta or Developer Beta).

Anyone can run the macOS beta, but to do so, you do need to register for either the developer beta, the pubic beta, or both.

We strongly recommend that you don’t risk all by putting the macOS beta on your primary macOS, especially not in the early days of the beta development.

If you don’t have a second Mac, there are a couple of ways you could run macOS beta on your Mac without running the risk of losing data or finding your Mac stops working:

We discuss the safety of the macOS beta and the risks you might be taking in more detail in a separate article.

If the stability of the beta worries you, then you are probably better off waiting until the final version is out, or at least waiting until testing has been happening for a few months before getting the beta.

4.

How to prepare your Mac for the beta

Update your software: We recommend you have the latest full version of macOS installed, although Apple says that the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility requires macOS 10.8 or later.

Make space: We’d recommend at least 15GB of available space because the macOS betas tend to be very large.

Beta users will be able to install the final build of the OS on release day without needing to reformat or reinstall.

If you are running a beta (such as the macOS 27 Golden Gate beta) and want to return to the current stable version (such as macOS 26 Tahoe) before the new OS officially launches in the fall, you must perform a clean installation. Because this requires wiping your internal drive, a full backup is essential, but you will want a backup made before you installed the macOS beta.

While access to developer betas was previously restricted to those paying a $99/£79 annual fee, Apple changed this policy in 2023 to allow anyone with a free developer account to access these builds .

How to reset an iPhone or iPad

11 August 2026 at 09:45

Macworld

If your iPhone or iPad is misbehaving and initial solutions are not working, a full reset may be necessary. Taking your device back to how it was out of the box can often help resolve issues like constant crashing, freezing or other serious problems.

It’s something of a nuclear option, though, so before you take this route we’d recommend restarting or force-restarting your iPhone or iPad, as that will leave your data and settings intact. Another option is to ensure that the version of iOS or iPadOS on your device is up to date, as the problem might be caused by an issue that has since been patched by Apple. We explain how to do this in our how to update iOS guide.

Of course, if you’re selling your iPhone (or passing it down to a family member or friend) it’s absolutely vital that you delete all the sensitive data stored on it. If not, an unscrupulous buyer could gain access to your social media profiles, financial information and even your personal photos and videos.

As with any activity that deletes data, we’d recommend that you back up your iPhone or iPad before you attempt resetting the device. After your device has been wiped you will be able to download your data from your backup.

How to wipe an iPhone or iPad

We’ll concentrate on iPhone for this tutorial, but the steps will be more or less the same for iPad. There are two ways to erase your iPhone or iPad, one is useful if you just want to erase everything and then recover the data from a backup, the other is useful if you are moving to a new device and selling or passing on the one you are erasing. There’s also a basic Reset option that might be all you need to do in order to fix a troublesome issue.

how to reset an iphone or ipad main

Foundry

To factory-reset an iPhone follow these steps (after backing up your device).

You may need to remove your device from Find My before you begin. You will also need to be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular for this process to work.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Choose Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. You now have the options Prepare for New iPhone, Reset, and Erase All Content and Settings:
    • Choose Reset if you just want to reset your settings. There are also options to reset network settings, reset the keyboard dictionary, reset the home screen layout, and reset location and privacy. These options may be enough to fix a problem with your iPhone without wiping it.
    • Choose Prepare for New iPhone to backup and wipe your iPhone for sale, or so you can pass it on to someone else.
    • Choose Erase All Content and Settings to completely wipe your iPhone and reinstall the operating system and everything else.
  5. The iPhone will alert you to what will be deleted, including Apps and Data and your Apple ID. Find My will no longer be connected to the device, and all your Apple Wallet details will be removed. This is your cue to back up any of this data (if you don’t have a backup we run through how to do that here: How to back up an iPhone or iPad.) You will also find options for backing up this information if you follow the Prepare for New iPhone steps below.
  6. If you are happy that you have a backup, or don’t need the data being referred to, either select Erase All Content and Settings or the Prepare for New iPhone option.
  7. Tap Continue.
  8. Enter the Passcode for the iPhone and the process will begin.

If you want help backing your data up to iCloud and want to make sure you cover all the important steps that you should make when selling your old device, you can make use of the Prepare for New iPhone instructions, which will walk you through the process.

How to reset iPhone or iPad: Erase all content

How to reset an iPhone if you’ve forgotten the password or passcode

During the process for resetting you iPhone your passcode will be requested, you may also need to use the password associated with your Apple ID. This is a problem if you have forgotten it.

There is a workaround if you have forgotten your passcode but remember your Apple ID password:

  1. On the Lock Screen, enter a passcode several times until you get a Security Lockout with a warning to try again later.
  2. You’ll see Erase iPhone (or iPad) at the bottom of the screen. Tap on that.
  3. Tap Erase iPhone/iPad and then tap it again to confirm.
  4. You’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID password to sign out of your Apple ID on this device. This will allow you to reset the device and turn off Activation Lock.
  5. Tap Erase iPhone/iPad when prompted again to permanently delete all your apps and data and reset the device.

After a few minutes, your iPhone or iPad will restart and you’ll be at the setup screen, as if it was a new device you just took out of the box. For obvious security reasons, there’s no way to reset your iPhone after a lost passcode without erasing all your apps and data. It would provide an exploitable loop for bad actors to get around the passcode timeouts and such. But as long as you back up your iPhone regularly (either via iCloud or with a connection to your computer) it shouldn’t be too onerous to start over.

Resetting without a password used to require plugging into a computer via USB, entering iPhone recovery mode…it was a whole process. The good news is, Apple made this a lot easier as of iOS 15.2 (and iPadOS 15.2). So, if your device is running that version or later you can follow the steps below (otherwise click on the link above to reset via a computer). If you have forgotten your Apple ID password read this for help: How to reset Apple ID if you forgot the password.

How to restore an iPhone

If, having erased the content of the phone, you intend to keep using it, you can restore the content to your phone from your backup – assuming you have one, if not check out the section below. Here’s to recover your iPhone or iPad data:

From an iCloud backup

With the factory reset completed you’ll need to go through the setup of your iPhone again from the beginning:

  1. Follow the onscreen instructions until you reach the page with the headings ‘Apps & Data’.
  2. Here you’ll see four different options from which you should select Restore from iCloud Backup.Sign into your iCloud account then select the backup you want to restore.
  3. You may be prompted to sign into various apps that you’ve already purchased, but other than that the process should now be pretty much automatic.
  4. Obviously, this could take a while if you have large backups or a slow internet connection, so don’t attempt this if you’re in a hurry. When the backup is completed your iPhone will reboot, and then it will start the larger job of downloading all of your apps.
How to reset iPhone or iPad: Restore iCloud

From a Finder or iTunes backup

Depending on the version of macOS you’re running, you’ll either be able to use Finder (macOS Mojave and later) or iTunes (macOS Catalina or earlier) to restore a backup.

  1. Connect your iPhone to the Mac or PC.
  2. In the Finder window (or iTunes) you should see your device listed in the left column. Select it, then click on Restore Backup.
  3. Choose the backup you want to use, then click Restore.
  4. The process should now automatically install the backup on your device.

What to do if you didn’t back up your iPhone before you wiped it

If you didn’t backup your iPhone or iPad first, it’s likely that you won’t be able to retrieve data once you have deleted it.

The data on an iOS device is automatically encrypted, and wiping the device destroys the encryption key, making it more or less impossible to get anything back when it’s been fully erased and reset without access to a backup.

In an emergency you could try speaking to someone at an Apple Genius Bar, but it’s a long shot to say the least. (This applies to a full erase/reset, mind you – in other circumstances, such as data corruption, a malfunctioning device and so on, the experts may be able to help.) This also reinforces our frequent advice to back up regularly.

If you’re worried that your iPhone or iPad wasn’t backed up, don’t give up hope: there’s a chance there may be a backup of which you’re unaware.

To find out if you’re backing up to iCloud follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose iCloud.
  4. Now tap on Manage Storage or just Storage, depending on the version of iOS. Here you should see an entry called Backups with the amount of data it’s taking up displayed to the right of the name.
  5. Tap this and you’ll see all of the various backups for your iOS/iPadOS devices.
  6. Find the most recent backup you have and tap on it.

One of the backups should say that it is This iPhone or This iPad. Tap on that and you can see what is, and isn’t being backed up. You can basically turn things on and off so that they don’t take up your full free 5GB iCloud allocation, or you can pay a few dollars/pounds a month for more storage.

How to reset iPhone or iPad: Backups

If you don’t see a backup from the device you were hoping to recover, but you do have backups of other devices (perhaps you have an iPad backup, but not an iPhone backup) you should be able to recover some of your data simply because once you link your iPhone to your iCloud account the shared data should be available on your iPhone.

If you weren’t backing you iPhone up to iCloud we suggest you do! Read How to back up an iPhone or iPad or follow the steps below.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on iCloud.
  3. Find iCloud Backup and tap on it.
  4. Now switch the slider beside iCloud Backup to on (green).
  5. Tap Back Up Now. It may take a while, so bear in mind that your iPhone needs to be plugged in for the whole time.

If the backup is going to take ages you can reduce the amount of data being backed up. For example, you may think that some of the apps don’t need to be backed up; after all, you will be able to download them again from the App Store as you already own them. But note that the data may include saved data for games, and other settings and preferences you would prefer not to lose.

Apple Arcade in August: Four new games added to the service this month

7 August 2026 at 19:04

Macworld

Gaming subscription services are all the rage now, but Apple Arcade isn’t a little different from the likes of PlayStation Plus, EA Play, or Xbox Game Pass. If you’ve got questions about it, we’ve got plenty of answers.

Updated August 7, 2026: There are four new games on the service again this month: Everyday Puzzles: Mini Games+, Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition, Retro Bowl College+, and Water Sort Puzzle: Get Color+.

What is Apple Arcade?

Apple Arcade is a gaming subscription service for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AppleTV that features several hundred games. The games are a mix of genres and styles, and include original games you’ll only find on the service and others that can be found on the regular App Store or even other platforms. Apple Arcade isn’t a streaming service like Xbox Live Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW. Games must be downloaded onto your device in order to be played.

What do I need to run it?

Apple Arcade was made available as part of iOS 13, iPad OS 13, tvOS 13, and macOS Catalina or later. Some of the more visually-intensive games may only run well on newer hardware, though, and some Mac games require macOS 11 (Big Sur).

How much does Apple Arcade cost?

Apple Arcade costs $6.99/£6.99 per month, and you’ll also get a one-month free trial or you can get three months free if you purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac. To claim your free trial click here.

You can get Apple Arcade for less than $6.99 a month if you subscribe for a year upfront. A year of Apple Arcade is $49.99/£49.99 (so $4.16 a month). If you’re currently on the $6.99 month-to-month plan and want to switch to the annual plan and save some money, you can do so on your iPhone or iPad. Open the App Store app, then tap your account icon in the upper right. Tap Subscriptions, then tap the entry for Apple Arcade. Here, you can switch to the annual plan.

Apple Arcade is also included in the Apple One subscription bundles, which range from $20 a month to $38 a month and include access to Apple Music and Apple TV and iCloud storage. There is also a month free trial of Apple One. To claim the trial, or sign up for Apple One, click here.

How do I sign up for Apple Arcade?

There isn’t an Apple Arcade app—it’s built into the App Store. On your iPhone, iPad, or Mac open the App Store and look for the Apple Arcade tab at the bottom of the screen (or in the left column on macOS). A sign-up screen with a Try It Free button will appear. After the trial you’ll be charged either the monthly or annual fee, depending on your selection. When subscribing, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID password or use Touch ID or Face ID to sign in, and you’ll have to confirm your subscription purchase a few times.

Once you’re done with the sign up, the Arcade section of the App Store shows what games are available to you. To access a game, tap on it in the App Store, then tap the Get button. When the game is done installing on your device, the Get button turns into a Play button, and you can tap it to launch the game. The game app icon will also appear on your device’s Home page.

On the Apple TV, there actually is an Arcade app. Open that to see the sign-up offer. You’ll also find an Arcade tab within the App Store.

Does my subscription include family sharing?

Yes. One $6.99 per month subscription can be shared between up to six people (including you).

How do I cancel Apple Arcade?

First off, keep in mind that if you cancel Apple Arcade (either before your free trial is up or after subscribing), you won’t be able to keep playing the games unless you re-subscribe. If you’re okay with that, you can use the same process you use to cancel any other subscription service. Here’s the easiest way to do it on the iPhone and iPad:

  1. Open the App Store app and tap on your profile photo in the upper right.
  2. In the screen that pops up, press Subscriptions near the top of the page.
  3. You’ll then see a list of active subscriptions, and Apple Arcade should be listed there. Tap it.
  4. You’ll either see Cancel Free Trial or Cancel Subscription toward the middle of the page that appears. Tap whatever option is available, then Confirm Cancellation.

And here’s how to cancel Apple Arcade on the Mac:

  1. Open the App Store app and then press the icon with your profile photo in the lower left.
  2. The Account window will appear, and you should then click View Information at the top of the window. Enter your password when/if prompted.
  3. When your Account Information appears, scroll down to the Manage section and click the Manage link to the right of Subscriptions.
  4. When the list of your active subscriptions appears, click Edit to the right of Apple Arcade.
  5. Toward the middle of the page that appears, you’ll see a button that says either Cancel Free Trial or Cancel Subscription. Click it, then click Confirm Cancellation and Confirm.

Do Apple Arcade games have in-app purchases?

No. In Apple’s words, “since every game includes access to the full experience, including all game features, content, and future updates, no additional purchases will be required.” Even games that have in-app purchases on the App Store won’t have any in Apple Arcade.

Do Apple Arcade games have ads?

Also no. On a related note, Apple says Apple Arcade has no ad tracking.

Is Apple Arcade a game streaming service like GeForce NOW or Xbox Game Streaming?

No. All Apple Arcade are downloaded.

Are there demos for Apple Arcade games?

No, and they’re not really necessary. Like App Store apps, games download quickly and can easily be removed if you don’t want to keep it anymore.

Apple partly envisions Apple Arcade as a way of letting players try out games with more freedom than the App Store currently allows (which is basically none). In Apple’s words, “rather than pay upfront for each game, a subscription to Apple Arcade will give players the opportunity to try any game in the service without risk.”

The service has a free trial, though, as we’ve seen with other Apple subscription services.

Am I able to keep playing Apple Arcade games if I cancel my subscription?

No. As with most subscription services, you only have access while you’re a subscriber.

Can I use controllers with Apple Arcade games?

Yes. In additional to traditional MFi (Made for iOS) controllers, you can pair some specific Bluetooth controllers for either PlayStation or Xbox with either your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Since many Apple Arcade games are playable on Mac and Apple TV (where controller support is more common), many games will support them. Some games, especially those that are also available in the broader App Store and only for iPhone or iPad, have no controller support.

rotor riot xbox lookalike

Recently Apple relaxed the requirements for MFi controller certification, which may have grown out of the Apple Arcade negotiations.

How often are new games released?

Games are typically released on the first Friday of each month. There are some rare exceptions.

What games have been released so far?

There are over 200 games available for Apple Arcade, and the list grows all the time.

24 July 2026 at 14:45

2.

3.

Was ist Emulation

Alles, was Sie machen müssen, ist:

  1. Klicken Sie auf die Schaltfläche „Holen Sie sich Windows 11 von Microsoft“.

24 July 2026 at 09:00

Macworld

TL;DR: Get MacMagic Lifetime Upgrades for just $29.99 (reg. $99.99) and add dozens of useful macOS tools—from cache cleaning and PDF editing to file management and hidden system utilities.

Macs are known for being intuitive, but they don’t always expose every useful feature. Some of the most practical tools are buried deep in macOS—or simply aren’t there at all.

But MacMagic changes all of that. For a one-time $29.99, you’ll get lifetime access to an all-in-one utility packed with tools that make everyday Mac tasks faster, easier, and a lot less frustrating.

Need to free up storage? MacMagic can clear oversized caches and logs. Working with PDFs? Merge, compress, and organize documents without switching apps. Managing hundreds of files? Batch rename them in seconds. It even lets you reveal hidden files, force-delete stubborn documents, restart Finder, and access useful macOS utilities that normally take a bit of digging to find.

There’s more packed in, too, including an image converter that supports more than 100 formats, a lightweight text editor, a QR code generator, SQLite and JSON viewers, Wi-Fi management tools, and GPS mapping for compatible photos.

Instead of installing a collection of single-purpose utilities, MacMagic brings them together in one clean interface.

Geekbench 7 is out now with new, modern workloads and better multi-core tests

23 July 2026 at 20:22

Macworld

It’s not easy to make a quick, reliable benchmark that works across architectures and operating systems. There’s a reason Geekbench has been sort of the gold standard for comparing overall CPU performance over the years, and to a lesser degree, GPU compute performance.

On Thursday, around three years after the release of Geekbench 6, Primate Labs is releasing Geekbench 7. To better represent the demands of modern applications, it includes new workload tests, a redesigned multi-core benchmark, and a new GPU benchmark. The benchmarks operate on larger data sets as well, again better representing the demands of modern applications.

New media workloads include encoding screen-sharing video with the AV1 codec, compressing music and speech with the Opus audio codec, and decoding audio and video while using the Whisper speech recognition model to generate live captions. Other new test include Game Physics, an updated Photo editing test, and new Photo library tests that processes JPEG XL and DNG formats.

The multi-core tests are especially changed, redesigned to “better reflect how real applications behave,” according to Primate Labs. Instead of forcing a series of exclusively multi-threaded tasks, which produces a distorted view of performance, the Geekbench 7 tests only include tests in the multi-threaded benchmark if it’s highly multi-threaded in real life.

The example Primate Labs gives is the HTML5 Browser test–web browsers and the tasks they run are typically highly dependent on single-thread performance, so it’s not included in the multi-threaded tests.

The GPU benchmarks are still focused on the compute applications for GPUs rather than on real-time 3D graphics rendering, but the types of applications have evolved. The tests now focus on the content creation and machine learning uses of GPUs, since those dominate GPU compute applications. For example: tracking faces in video, upscaling images using machine learning algorithms, or blurring the background of a video chat.

Here at Macworld, we’ll be using Geekbench 7 to benchmark new Apple hardware moving forward, while still including Geekbench 6 for a while to provide comparisons against older hardware.

Scores are not comparable between versions. We quickly ran Geekbench 7 on an M5 MacBook Air, and got a single-core CPU score of 3,608 and a multi-core score of 17,470. That compares to 4,164 and 16,995 on Geekbench 6.6. The GPU benchmark, using the Metal API, scored 72,514 on Geekbench 7 and 76,377 on Geekbench 6.6.

You can download Geekbench 7 for Mac from Primate Labs’ website, and Geekbench 7 for iPhone and iPad from the App Store. At the time of publishing, the App Store version does not yet appear to be available, but should be coming soon.

20 July 2026 at 14:45

Lesen Sie unseren SuperDuper! Test

Fazit
