Wireless Logic buys bigger Brazilian IoT presence

11 August 2026 at 12:24

Enterprise IoT connectivity provider Wireless Logic further expanded its operations in Brazil by arranging the purchase of a local telecoms player’s connectivity business.

The company is set to take on the IoT element of Algar Telecom and incorporate it into existing Brazilian business Arqia, which Wireless Logic acquired in 2025.

Arqia CEO Tomas Fuchs said the deal would enable it to provide more “comprehensive” services and speed expansion. He believes the move “demonstrates Wireless Logic’s confidence in Brazil’s potential as a key growth market in Latin America”.

Wireless Logic explained typical closing conditions must be met before the deal is completed, at which point it expects a boost for Arqia’s ability to deliver services to the agricultural, logistics, payments, utilities, manufacturing and healthcare sectors.

It highlighted Latin America as “one of the world’s most promising IoT growth markets” and stated Arqia’s capabilities in mission-critical services are set to be increased by the acquisition.

The company plans a phased integration, with the businesses initially continuing to run separately.

IHS Towers completes LatAm exit

7 August 2026 at 16:59

Infrastructure company IHS Towers completed the sale of assets in Brazil and Colombia to Macquarie Asset Management, a deal announced in February as being worth $952 million.

IHS noted the sale signals its exit from the Latin America region and is part of a strategy around “shareholder value-creation”.

Macquarie noted the transaction includes 8,700 sites in Brazil and 250 in Colombia, strengthening its position as a “long-term investor in the digital infrastructure sector” and “supporting the growth of critical infrastructure across Latin America”.

The investment company’s Brazil country manager Fernando Lohmann added the market he heads “continues to be one of the most attractive infrastructure markets globally, supported by growing demand for connectivity and long-term investment in critical services.”

“As digitalisation accelerates across Brazil and the broader region, resilient communications infrastructure will play an increasingly important role in supporting economic growth and social development”.

Completion of the sale comes as operator group MTN continues to work towards an acquisition of IHS Towers, a company it already owned around a quarter of before announcing its intent for a complete buyout in February.

The deal with MTN is still undergoing the regulatory process. Earlier this week, IHS shareholders formally approved the takeover bid at the company’s extraordinary general meeting.

In a stock market notification today (7 August), the operator group noted the sale of the IHS’s Latin American assets aligned with its intention “to acquire only IHS’s African assets”.

NTT digs deep into remote operations at Chile mine

7 August 2026 at 11:24

NTT Docomo Business partnered with Chilean state-owned copper mining company Codelco to assess the viability of remotely operating heavy machinery over high capacity, low latency communications architecture.

The pair plan to connect the El Teniente mine to a remote operations centre 1,500km away using an Innovative Optical and Wireless Network All Photonic Network (IOWN APN), which the technology company hopes will provide the means for remote operations and HD video monitoring at the site.

For Codelco the test is part of an ambition to up safety and efficiency at its mines. It aims to move towards advanced monitoring and remote operations, partly to address working condition issues including easing a risk of mine collapses.

NTT noted the mining company was also struggling from a lack of access to skilled operators.

Among the specific areas set to be assessed in the project are: the type of communication environment needed; evaluation of network configurations with a view to cutting down the number of operations centres required; and examining the use of IOWN APN more generally in the mining sector.

NTT noted it planned to use insights from this project to create new use cases for IOWN APN technology, which the company has been heavily pushing for industrial uses.

“The company will explore the potential for further applications in the mining and energy sectors, as well as across other sectors where remote operations are required,” it added.

The project is part of a research programme commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Sateliot cracks Brazil with LEO cattle drive

15 June 2026 at 15:46

Sateliot pressed the benefits of satellite connectivity for agriculture in a test with Brazilian innovation centre CPQD which it stated showcased the advantages of non-terrestrial IoT.

Standard NB-IoT devices were connected in a remote area out-with the reach of land-based mobile networks as part of a Sateliot initiative to boost use of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites in Brazil.

The company explained the “performance and commercial viability” of satellite-enabled IoT was verified, proving the “feasibility of seamless roaming” between land- and space-based networks.

Sateliot and CPQD put the technology to work tracking cattle.

The Spanish company’s Conecte o Brasil LEO NTN push involves device validation and interoperability testing. The initiative is intended to help Sateliot unlock a nation it stated is “one of the largest untapped IoT markets in the world”.

Sateliot highlighted large portions of Brazil are still not in range of mobile networks, potentially hampering the nation’s ability to capitalise on growth in cellular IoT services.

Elitelma Souza, CPQD solution manager for Automation, IoT and Hybrid Computing, said extending the “reach of IoT” services could “enable new operating models for various sectors of the economy”.

Sateliot CCO Gianluca Redolfi highlighted the test was the company’s first “commercial demonstration in Brazil”, making it “a crucial milestone” in its push there and beyond.

EU adds to digital tie-ups with Brazil deal

15 June 2026 at 12:09

The European Union (EU) signed a digital partnership with Brazil, strengthening ties on shared technology priorities, including data governance, AI, digital infrastructure, connectivity and online platforms.

The EU’s Digital Partnerships initiative is described by the body as a “core instrument” of its external digital policy, enabling cooperation with like-minded countries on shared priorities.

The agreement was signed in Brazil by Henna Virkkunen, EVP at the European Commission and Brazil’s Secretary for Technology, Alex Giacomelli da Silva.

According to comments cited by Reuters, Virkkunen said the bloc’s push to secure more digital cooperation deals is centred on a desire to reduce reliance on US technology.

“Brazil is a country which shares very much the same value[s] as the EU. So Brazil is committed to open markets, to secure technologies, also to a rules-based order.”

She added the EU is looking to build partnerships because it cannot stay competitive alone, while working to reduce dependence on other nations for services including chip manufacturing and cloud.

Brazil becomes the fifth country to partner with the EU on digital initiatives, joining Canada, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

Data exchange
Through the partnership. The EU and Brazil pledged to step-up joint efforts to promote resilient global supply chains, contributing to an inclusive, rules-based system of global digital governance.

It builds on an agreement struck in January to collaborate on data sharing after finding their protection levels were similar. This agreement allowed businesses, public authorities and researchers to freely exchange data between Brazil and the EU without additional requirements.

The Digital Partnership will now be implemented through dedicated technical workstreams and “high-level exchanges”. A meeting of the Digital Partnership Council will be held in the next 12 months, providing a strategic direction and joint roadmap for the partnership to move forward.

Taiwan bolsters Paraguay ties with $200M data centre deal

12 June 2026 at 16:23

The government of Taiwan reportedly plans to deepen its diplomatic relationship with Paraguay through a planned $200 million data centre investment, in a rare technology investment designed to strengthen the pair’s diplomatic relationship.

Bloomberg reported the date centre partnership, which is backed by the Trump administration, is targeting 10-megawatts of computing capacity. It is expected to be operational by the end of 2027.

The data centre will be built on government land near the capital of Asuncion.

The news site noted Taiwan will supply Nvidia chips and supporting equipment, while Paraguay brings cheap hydropower and basic infrastructure to the partnership.

Both sides are in discussions with the US International Development Finance Corporation over financing arrangements.

Sources told Bloomberg Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund has separately approached Google, Microsoft and Amazon about potentially investing in the project or taking up capacity.

Paraguay is one of only a handful of countries worldwide which still maintains formal ties with Taiwan rather than China, but pressure is growing domestically for a reassessment of the position as neighbouring countries have attracted substantial Chinese investment.
