Tesla expands ‘Robotaxi’ to entire Austin metro — but still has only ~20 vehicles

Tesla announced today that its unsupervised “Robotaxi” service now covers the entire Austin metro area, a significant expansion of its geofenced operating zone.

It’s a notable milestone on paper, but the actual fleet serving this massive area remains tiny — just ~20 active unsupervised vehicles, according to the latest data, a number that has actually been shrinking.

From the wreckage of Super Typhoon Sinlaku, Pacific Islanders slowly recover

Katelynn Delos Reyes thought she knew what to expect when Typhoon Sinlaku slammed into Saipan in April. As a lifelong resident of the island, Delos Reyes had survived frequent storms, including Super Typhoon Yutu, the second-strongest in U.S. history. Eight years ago, Yutu’s 274-kmph (about 170-mph) winds devastated her village in the southern end of Saipan. Just three years before that, she survived Typhoon Soudelor. But Sinlaku was different. “At the beginning, it was OK. But later on it wasn’t,” said Delos Reyes, who is Chamorro, Indigenous to the Mariana Islands. A few days before it hit the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or CNMI, on April 14, Sinlaku had tropical-storm winds. That made it what is known in the Marianas as a “banana typhoon” because such storms level banana trees but leave others standing. Then over the weekend, the typhoon rapidly intensified by 120 kmph (75 mph) in just 24 hours before becoming a 298-kmph (about 185-mph) monstrosity and the strongest storm on Earth so far this year. Delos Reyes and her family had done what they could to prepare. They boarded up the windows. They bought gallons of drinking water and filled plastic drums to use in the shower and toilet. Then the storm hit, and Delos Reyes grew scared. The winds, which had weakened to 240 kmph (about 150 mph), ripped the wood from a window. Rainwater gushed through the ceiling and soaked their belongings, including Delos Reyes’ mattress. She and her partner, her mother, her…This article was originally published on Mongabay

A natural depsipeptide antibiotic binds the E-site of the bacterial ribosome

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10589-2

Improved fractionation strategies can identify antibiotics with previously unseen scaffolds and mechanisms, exemplified by manikomycin from Streptomyces rimosus, which acts by targeting the E-site of the bacterial large ribosomal subunit.

Mining triggers extensive additional deforestation in sub-Saharan Africa

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10551-2

Extensive mining activity leads to large-scale deforestation of dense tropical forests across sub-Saharan Africa, driven particularly by key energy transition minerals such as cobalt.

Teosinte alleles enhance nitrogen assimilation and seed protein in maize

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10575-8

Teosinte alleles enhance nitrogen assimilation and seed protein without lowering crop yield when expressed in modern maize, providing a powerful strategy for crop improvement to meet future population demands.

Cell-type-resolved genetic variation shapes inflammatory bowel disease risk

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10627-z

Single-cell mapping of cis-expression quantitative trait loci in inflammatory bowel disease revealed distal, enhancer-enriched variants detected at the cell-type level more frequently co-localize with genome-wide association study loci than those identified at the tissue level.

Analysis of trade-offs of post-sorting plastic packaging

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10606-4

An analysis of post-sorting plastic packaging shows that target polymer purity is similar across source-separation and post-sorting pathways, but post-sorted plastics contain more contaminants that need to be removed before recyclate production.

Spermine is an endogenous iron chelator that inhibits ferroptosis

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10597-2

A non-canonical metabolic route for spermine synthesis mediated by ALDH18A1 limits iron availability and lipid peroxidation in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Commensal-derived acetylcholine enhances mucosal immune education

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10592-7

A diet–microbiome–host axis strengthens mucosal immune defences and reinforces host–microbiota mutualism.

Nuclear shell structure governs short-range nucleon pairing

Nature, Published online: 03 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10616-2

The scattering of high-energy electrons from three different nuclei demonstrated that short-range-correlated pairing depends far more on the specific quantum orbitals occupied by nucleons than predicted by theoretical models.
