How to watch Spanish Grand Prix 2026: Live stream F1 race from anywhere

11 September 2026 at 09:30

Watch the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix live streams to see F1's newest circuit, Madrid's “Madring,” in action. The Mad-Ring produced 19 red flags across two days of F3 testing last month, with 10 different drivers finding the walls. Why so? Well, the 5.4km circuit has 22 corners – the most on the F1 calendar this season – with plenty of fast, flowing sections, blind spots and walls that leave very little room for error.

And then there's La Monumental. The 270-degree Turn 12 stretches for around 550 meters, its 24% banking the most significant on the F1 calendar. With so many of the track's braking zones at an angle, overtaking is expected to be very difficult – much like at Monaco, qualifying could prove vital.

Kimi Antonelli arrives in Madrid after producing one of the finest drives in F1 history, taking the top step from 19th on the grid to become the first Italian to win at Monza since 1966. George Russell, who started on the front row, finished second, but is now 66 points behind his Mercedes team-mate in the Drivers' Championship.

Elsewhere, Ferrari will be one to watch, particularly after the chaos at Monza. Charles Leclerc pushed Lewis Hamilton wide at Turn 2 on the opening lap before crashing into the barriers at the Parabolica on Lap 2. And despite Ferrari bringing upgrades to its home race, Hamilton could only finish sixth.

Max Verstappen grabbed a podium in Italy but is still waiting for his first win of the season. McLaren, meanwhile, will be hoping to return to the podium as they continue to fight at the top, but reigning champion Lando Norris is 96 points adrift of Antonelli.

Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal 2026 - Previews

First up of the brace of races is the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, which runs over 206 km on the 12 km city-centre circuit that includes the signature short ascent of Côte de la Montagne. The traditionally attritional race was last year won by Julian Alaphilippe, but the Frenchman won’t be back to defend his crown as he has recently retired. The big names on the start list to keep an eye on read like a who’s who of the current cycling elite, with Remco Evenepoel, Thomas Pidcock, Isaac del Toro and Paul Seixas all down to ride. The key big name missing, of course, is Tadej Pogačar after he crashed out of the Vuelta a España.

Two days later, the same stellar cast will take to the streets of Montreal for a dress rehearsal of the World Championships, which will be held on the same roads on September 27. Covering 214 km over 16 laps, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal is the harder of the two races, and each lap features the tough Côte Camilien-Houde. The big names will all want to know the circuit inside out before coming back to fight for the rainbow bands two weeks later, but will they go for the win or keep their cards close to their chest?

How to watch Fremantle vs Geelong for FREE: Live streams & TV channels for AFL 2026 Semi-Final

11 September 2026 at 08:10

Watch Fremantle vs Geelong live streams from the Optus Stadium as the minor premiers try to avoid an AFL 2026 exit at the earliest opportunity, against the visiting Cats. The Semi-Final winner goes through to the Preliminary Final next week, the loser is out.

The Dockers had enjoyed a club-record 19 home-and-away wins in the regular season but defeat last weekend by Hawthorn was a stunning first home reverse of the season in Perth. Justin Longmuir's side must now go the long way round to reach a first Preliminary Final since 2015 after the minor premiers lost their third match from four. Josh Treacy endured a bit of a shocker last week – failing to take a mark for just the second time in his 104-game career – but the key forward is determined to prove his elite smarts and bounce back in this crunch clash.

The Cats finished fifth in the ladder and now seek their 12th prelim since coach Chris Scott took the reins in 2011. Geelong are full of experience and last weekend won seven straights games by an average of 35 points. Against the in-form Carlton, last year's runners-up really stepped and they will want to quieten the crowd early in Perth and put pressure on a Fremantle side that seemed to wilt last time out. Captain Patrick Dangerfield is a big-game player, much-needed too as Max Holmes and Jeremy Cameron have fitness concerns.

The winner goes through to face Hawthorn.

Read on as we explain how to watch Fremantle vs Geelong for free in the AFL 2026 Semi-Final.

How to watch NRL Qualifying and Elimination Finals 2026: FREE streams, TV channels for Rabbitohs vs Knights

11 September 2026 at 07:50

Watch NRL Qualifying and Elimination Finals 2026 as the Finals Series gets underway in the build-up to the Grand Final in October. The teams ranked first to fourth in the ladder (Panthers vs Roosters and Warriors vs Dolphins) meet to decide who advances straight to the Preliminary Finals, while fifth to eighth (Sharks vs Cowboys and Rabbitohs vs Knights) meet in the elimination matches – winners advance to next week's semi-finals, losers are out.

We begin on Friday with the Rabbitohs (6) vs Knights (7) at Sydney's Allianz Stadium. South Sydney are back in the finals for the first time since 2022 and in good form after walloping the Roosters 50-20 with Latrell Mitchell looking good. The Knights have done well to get this far after propping up the ladder last year and Kalyn Ponga, Bradman Best and Fletcher Sharpe have been in fine form.

On Saturday, ladder runners-up the New Zealand Warriors take on the third-place Dolphins in the first Qualifying Final. The Go Media Stadium hosts a first playoffs game since 2023 and Wahs Nation will be all over this.

That's followed by the Sharks (5) vs Cowboys (8) back at Allianz Stadium in an eliminator. Cronulla-Sutherland have lost four of their past five outings, while North Queensland have been inconsistent all season. Braydon Trindall returns as playmaker for the Sharks, while Griffin Neame, Jeremiah Nanai and Zac Laybutt are all fit again for the Cowboys.

On Sunday, we close with minor premiers the Panthers facing the Roosters at CommBank Stadium. Penrith topped the ladder on the final day and welcome back skipper Isaah Yeo to the lineup. The Roosters went down 26-12 to the Dolphins last time out after challenging for the minor title, and lost star man Sam Walker to injury for the rest of the season.

Solheim Cup 2026 live stream: how to watch Europe vs USA anywhere, schedule, preview

11 September 2026 at 03:00

Watch Solheim Cup 2026 live streams as Angela Stanford's Team USA attempt to win the title on European soil for the first time in more than a decade, while Anna Nordqvist's Europeans try to wrestle back the trophy they held for three consecutive editions until they were beaten in Gainesville two years ago.

It was beginning to feel like the US may never win a Solheim Cup again until captain Stacy Lewis finally got the job done by a three-point margin at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club – Lilia Vu holding her nerve and holing a two-foot putt to seal things. She misses out this year after struggling with injuries, but the US team includes the sport's biggest star. World No.1 Nelly Korda has had a season to remember, winning the US Women's Open and Chevron Championship. Lauren Coughlin, Angel Yin and rookie Auston Kim have also shown good form in the lead-up.

Team Europe's charge will be led by two English players in Charley Hull and debutant Lottie Woad, both ranked in the world's top 10. Hull and Spaniard Carlota Ciganda are by far the most experienced players heading to the Bernardus Golf Club, with seven Solheim Cup appearances apiece. Nordqvist will hope that makes up for the relative inexperience of other team members, with four rookies including 21-year-old captain's pick Nastasia Nadaud.

It's a race to 14.5 points to win, 14 is enough for the US to retain the cup. We begin on Friday morning with the foursomes.

Here's where to watch Solheim Cup 2026 live streams online from anywhere, together with a schedule and full team lists.

Man Utd vs Sabah FREE streams: How to watch Champions League 2026/27 fixture online from anywhere

10 September 2026 at 17:00
  • Man Utd vs Sabah: Thursday, September 10 at 8pm BST / 3pm ET
  • Free Stream: RTE Player (Ireland)
  • Away from home? Use NordVPN to unblock your live stream

Watch Man Utd vs Sabah live streams as Michael Carrick leads the Red Devils back into the Champions League against an Azerbaijani outfit making their debut in the competition.

Man Utd have won this tournament three times in the past, yet they have not made much of an impact in recent years. In the last four seasons, they have only appeared in the Champions League once. That was in 2023/24, when they crashed out in the group stage after finishing behind Bayern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

Carrick's side have made a mixed start to the Premier League campaign, collecting four points from their first three games against Hull, Ipswich and Everton. They could do with a pick-me-up ahead of a crunch clash with Man City this weekend.

Victory should not be taken for granted here, but it goes without saying that this fixture represents a kind start to Man Utd's continental campaign. Anything less than a comfortable win would be a disappointing outcome for the Red Devils.

Here's how to watch Man Utd vs Sabah in the 2026/27 Champions League from anywhere in the world.

There’s a Huge Economic Problem With Tesla’s Cybercabs

10 September 2026 at 16:08

Tesla’s flashy unveiling of its Cybercab robotaxi in 2024 left some glaring questions unanswered.

The sleek, gold-colored coupé impressed with a futuristic design, but baffled onlookers with its cramped two-seat interior, lack of a charging port, and a dubious, far-too-good-to-be-true $30,000 price tag.

Just under two years later, the first Cybercabs are starting to hit the streets in Austin, Texas — and Tesla is just itching to sell you one. Last week, the EV maker started handing out a “Robotaxi interest form,” as Electrek reported at the time, in an apparent effort attract would-be entrepreneurs willing to buy an entire fleet of the unusual vehicles.

Put simply, the idea is to share revenue from ride income with Tesla while the vehicles operate on the carmaker’s network, using its self-driving tech.

It’s part of a much broader plan. For many years, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised that its Full Self-Driving-enabled vehicles, including the Cybercab, could effectively turn into an appreciating money-printing machine, allowing owners to sit on their couch and magically watch the money roll in.

As early as 2018, Musk promised investors that he saw the “future as kind of a shared electric autonomy, so that you’d be able to do ride-hailing or share the car any way,” likening it to “some combination of like Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb.”

But there are plenty of reasons businesspeople should hesitate before takeing Tesla up on the offer of operating a Robotaxi fleet, as Electrek‘s Fred Lambert argued in a compelling essay this week.

Basically, he pointed out, “if running a fleet of Cybercabs were actually profitable, Tesla wouldn’t sell you a single one.” It’s like claiming you’ve found an infinite money glitch — and then instead of quietly profiting off it, selling a get-rich-quick book on how to do it yourself.

There are also looming technical questions. Musk’s lofty promises of a vehicle that completes ride-hailing requests autonomously while also appreciating in value has little, if any, bearing with reality in 2026. To the contrary, the EV maker’s offerings are among some of the fastest depreciating vehicles on the market today.

Then there’s the questionable value proposition. Tesla controls the entire network, the self-driving software, and prices. It even “sets the split,” as Lambert argues. Instead, fleet owners are stuck eating the “capital cost and the depreciation, while Tesla keeps the software margin and its cut of every fare.”

In other words, “you don’t own a business in that arrangement. You own the downside.”

It’s a dubious business opportunity closely reminiscent of Tesla’s infamous FSD advanced driver assistance software. Owners once shelled out a massive $15,000 — before it became exclusively a $99 a month subscription — to access a feature that’s still a complete disaster, leading to fatal collisions and terrifying close calls even after many years of development.

Not only are they spending the equivalent of a small car on faulty software, they’re willing to shoulder the risk as well. Tesla has a long track record of trying to wriggle out of lawsuits arising from these accidents, arguing it was the driver’s fault for engaging the software and not paying attention.

Much like its regular lineup of FSD-enabled vehicles, Tesla’s Cybercab relies entirely on a camera-based autonomous driving system, an approach that experts say is fundamentally flawed.

Nonetheless, as the Austin American-Statesman reports, local investors in Austin are chomping at the opportunity to run their own Cybercab fleet.

Meanwhile, regulators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are watching closely. The agency opened a probe into the Tesla, questioning that its new Cybercab “meets all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.”

How to watch Patriots vs Seahawks: Free Streams & TV Channels for 2026 NFL Kickoff Game

9 September 2026 at 22:00

The Patriots famously didn't show up for the 2026 Super Bowl, so here's hoping they know this season's NFL Kickoff Game is taking place a day earlier than usual.

The Seahawks tore the Pats apart in February's showpiece. Honours were even in the touchdown count, with each team scoring twice, but Seattle's points haul was fleshed out by five field goals. New England scored none, had two interceptions and a fumble, and allowed Drake Maye to be sacked a staggering – literally – six times.

It's been an interesting summer to say the least for Mike Vrabel, who cheered himself up by getting three-time all-Pro receiver AJ Brown on board. The return of offensive lineman Will Campbell can only be good news for Maye too. However, after drawing a favourable schedule last season, they've been handed a stinker this term, with their first four fixtures dripping with danger.

For all of the terrifying brilliance of "The Dark Side", the Hawks have been largely overlooked by the NFL fortune-tellers. Losing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III and offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak was far from ideal, but it's worth remembering the reigning champions put together one of the most dominant campaigns in National Football League history. Mike Macdonald has had his first team-talk done for him.

Read on as we explain how to watch Patriots vs Seahawks for free.

Tesla’s Glitchy Cybercab Accidentally Lets Passengers Access Controls to Manually Drive the Car Using Virtual Joystick on In-Vehicle Screen

9 September 2026 at 20:14

One of the selling points of Tesla’s much-hyped Cybercab — its purpose-built robotaxi — is that it doesn’t need manual controls. That’s why it doesn’t even come with a steering wheel or pedals.

But an early passenger who got to ride one of the self-driving cars after they launched in Austin last week discovered that they secretly have manual controls hidden in a touchscreen — the most practical way to control a car, as everyone knows — after its software glitched out and accidentally revealed them.

The passenger, Matthew Skrzypczak, wrote on X over the weekend that when he got in his Cybercab to take it for a spin, the display, instead of showing an interface to let him start his ride, showed a “virtual joystick for manual driving.”

“I have a feeling I wasn’t supposed to see this,” he wrote.

In a video he uploaded, the display shows a splitscreen view of various camera angles and an area that lets you control several of the car’s functions. Crucially, there’s also a touchscreen joystick for shifting the car into gear, which says “forward” at the top and “reverse” at the bottom.

Skrzypczak was able to close the door and honk the horn successfully, but when he tries to move the car it doesn’t budge — which is probably for the best, since there were pedestrians nearby — though this may be because he was simply using the joystick wrong.

This feature is almost certainly intended for Tesla employees, and it’s unclear why a passenger like Skrzypczak, and at least one other who noted the issue, was able to access it. To be clear, manual controls are obviously necessary in case an employee or emergency workers needs to move the vehicle when it’s malfunctioning. But putting it behind a slippery touchscreen is also far less practical than an old-fashioned steering wheel and pedal, which is all being done so CEO Elon Musk can have bragging rights.

The workaround hasn’t proved amusing to regulators. Shortly after Tesla launched Cybercab rides in Austin, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an audit into how Tesla self-certified that the vehicles were safe for the road despite their lack of conventional manual controls.

How to watch NFL 2026 for FREE: Live Streams & TV Channels for Week 1

9 September 2026 at 20:00

Watch NFL 2026 live streams as as the 32 franchises of the AFC and NFC fight it out for a chance to play at Super Bowl LXI on February 14. Below we have all the info on how to watch NFL football from anywhere in the world with details on worldwide TV channels, broadcasters and free streams.

After head coach Mike Macdonald and inspirational QB Sam Darnold swept them to the franchise's second Vince Lombardi Trophy, the Seattle Seahawks will now be looking to assert themselves as a dynastic team. Despite failing to win a preseason game, they come into the 2026 campaign with all their major stars fit and firing. While Drake Maye and co of the new England Patriots will hope their encouraging summer preparation will catapult them to go one better than Super Bowl losers last time out.

Outside of last year's two finalists, the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills and Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs look like the strongest sides in the AFC, while the LA Rams (with fresh out of retirement Aaron Donald), Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions are all expected to go deep in the playoffs come January. The Las Vegas Raiders will just be hoping and praying that their Heisman Trophy-winning no. 1 draft pick Fernando Mendoza will change their fortunes.

It all begins again with Week 1 and a very familiar looking matchup... a repeat of February's Super Bowl LX between the Seahawks and Patriots at Lumen Field on Wednesday! The season goes international early this year, with the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia hosting 49ers vs Rams as the country's first ever regular season game. Back in the States, Bills vs Texans, Cowboys vs Giants and Broncos vs Chiefs all standout as much-watch games this week.

Here's where to watch NFL 2026 live streams online from anywhere – starting with FREE options.

And in New Zealand, three matches per week will show on its free-to-air TVNZ 1 and Duke channels and online TVNZ+ platform, plus all playoff matches and Super Bowl LXI live and for free. They'll also show the first game of the season and that big game across the Tasman Sea in Melbourne.

In Ireland, Virgin Media will broadcast at least 22 games this season on TV and its Virgin Media Play platform. That has been confirmed to include 18 Sunday games, three playoff games and the Super Bowl.

Watch Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid live streams as Reds head coach Andoni Iraola takes charge of his first European match in a potential Champions League 2026/27 classic at Anfield.

The Basque boss recorded his first win as Liverpool boss last Friday, a 2-0 win at Ipswich after worryingly topsy-turvy 2-2 draws with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Alexander Isak's early brace at Portman Road was a positive sign that the Swede is coming back into form after a tough first season on Merseyside, while Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo added solidity to a hitherto creaking defense at right-back. Bradley Barcola, recently signed from PSG, is pushing for a start.

Atleti slipped up at the weekend, losing 3-0 to Iraola's alma mater Athletic Bilbao after opening La Liga with seven points from their opening three games. The three-time beaten finalists are desperate to go one better this year and was why Diego Simeone dug in his heels to prevent Argentine compatriot Julian Alvarez from joining Barcelona this summer. The 26-year-old forward is being reintegrated into the squad after agitating for the move, while Colchonero captain Koke, now 34, will make his 150th Champions League appearance if he features tonight.

How to watch Napoli vs Arsenal: Free Streams & TV Channels for Champions League 2026/27

9 September 2026 at 17:00

Watch Napoli vs Arsenal live streams as last season’s beaten finalists visit the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona hoping to start the Champions League 2026/27 league phase with a victory.

After the heartbreak of losing on penalties to PSG in the Champions League final, Arsenal have rebuilt strongly this summer. Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis have added plenty of quality, with the trio all featuring in recent weeks as the reigning Premier League champions have begun the domestic campaign with three straight victories. After the weekend's 2-1 come-from-behind win against Chelsea, the Gunners will hope to carry that form into Europe and inflict a third successive defeat on Max Allegri’s side.

Napoli failed to make it out of the league phase last season and come into this year’s competition on the back of two disappointing results. Beaten 2-1 by Como, the Little Donkeys then threw away a two-goal lead on Saturday to lose 3-2 to reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan. The one positive for the Italian side is the form of Rasmus Hojlund, who bagged in both defeats, but they must do without Scott McTominay while the Scot undergoes a minor heart operation for a mild benign arrhythmia.

Amazon Cargo Jet Crashes Just Feet From Parking Lot Full of Tesla Cybercabs, Killing Five

8 September 2026 at 18:45

An Amazon Prime Air cargo jet ripped right past the landing zone at the Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, struggling to stop itself in time before overrunning the runway and crashing into a cleaning crew and a nearby SUV.

It was a tragic incident, killing five innocent people.

The Boeing 767-300 also barreled right through a chain-link fence that was protecting a highly unusual lot of vehicles: photographs of the scene show the dented nose of the airliner just a few dozen feet away from a kennel of parked Tesla Cybercabs.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has banked the future success of his EV maker on the gold-colored self-driving vehicles, which are too small to fit more than two passengers and lack both steering wheels or pedals. Their sudden appearance in a story about a deadly airliner disaster had the billionaire taken aback. However, instead of offering his condolences after the tragedy, Musk simply tweeted the word “Weird” in response.

The peculiar cameo also led to plenty of questions over Tesla’s plans to roll out the cars outside of Austin. Just last week, the Cybercabs were deployed for the first time in the Texas city, but the company has yet to announce any imminent launches in Miami.

Regulators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration watched closely following last week’s deployment, which comes just shy of two years after Tesla first showed off its Cybercab. As Bloomberg notes, the light on details event was “uncharacteristically low-key,” offering no livestream or media coverage.

The “Cybercab event was largely a bust,” tweeted Future Fund Advisors co-founder Gary Black. “The launch offered little detail and key questions remained unanswered.”

Indeed, regulatory approval is hazy for vehicles without any traditional driver controls, a topic that’s especially pertinent to Tesla. Musk has bet the company’s entire future on the success of its Cybercabs and its humanoid robot, dubbed Optimus.

With neither showing any signs of a significant public rollout any time soon, Wall Street is bound to keep asking some tough questions.

It Turns Out That Drivers Absolutely Detest Those Giant Touchscreens They Put in Cars Now

6 September 2026 at 13:01

Automakers are having an increasingly difficult time convincing their customers that more in-car screens — and the often dodgy software that accompanies them — are a compelling reason to pay a major premium.

Virtually every major car company is now installing increasingly enormous screens into the dashboards of its cars, frequently stretching far beyond the driver’s seat and into the passenger area as well.

But what’s becoming more and more clear is that practically nobody actually wants any of those purported luxuries in their ride. As a new survey by consumer research firm JD Power goes to show, owners of 2026 model-year vehicles are being actively put off by the enormous displays.

Out of the 68,000 owners JD Power surveyed, over a third of them said that they never even tried to use passenger screens, while only six percent said they use them every time they get in the car. Worse yet, in its own investigation, JD Power found that the larger screens were more prone to infotainment system problems as well.

The survey made clear that the most popular consumer-facing car technologies, out of the 40 examined, were the ones that were the most easily ignored, such as smart ignition or smart HVAC. The lowest on the entire list, tellingly, were passenger console touchscreens — which have previously been linked to severe driving safety issues that were absent for traditional knobs and buttons.

“The technology customers value most is often the technology they barely notice because it simply works,” said JD Power director of customer success Doron Hikry in an accompanying press release. “Smart ignition and smart climate control make everyday driving easier without demanding the driver’s attention, while more automation and additional screens don’t necessarily translate into a better experience.”

Beyond wasted space for giant screens, owners also weren’t impressed with Level 2 Plus driver assistance systems, which allow them to drive without having to keep their hands on the wheel on certain roads, such as Tesla’s infamous Full Self-Driving feature. In its survey, JD Power found that owners preferred Level 2 systems in terms of both design and quality of experience.

“The results indicate that owners may currently be more comfortable with systems that clearly assist the driver rather than those that introduce a greater degree of automation,” Hikry added.

It’s an already familiar trend, with consumers growing frustrated with every feature getting buried in convoluted touchscreen interfaces. Some automakers have caught on to the widespread frustration, opting to fall back on easier-to-use and less distracting tactile controls for car interiors.

The People Maintaining Waymo’s Self-Driving Cars Are Being Treated Horribly, Insider Claims

4 September 2026 at 19:58

As work conditions go, the transition from licensed taxi cabs to the rideshare model represented a significant step backwards for drivers in the US. Stable wage jobs became “side gigs,” while human managers were replaced by labyrinthine algorithms. And forget fleet maintenance — under the new model, disenfranchised drivers were now responsible for their own vehicle’s upkeep, and all the financial burdens that come with it.

Yet with robotaxis from brands like Waymo and Tesla spreading through US cities like wildfire, even the Uber-fied gig economy is starting to become untenable for workers. Rising in its place is the “robotaxi handling” industry, bring with it contract jobs that are somehow even more grueling than the rideshare gigs they’re replacing.

A startling interview with an anonymous Waymo contractor by Bay Area Current details precisely how degrading these jobs can be. The worker, identified only as a “Robotaxi Handler,” outlines a poorly organized jobsite where incognito enforcers routinely snitch on undertrained contractors on behalf of management. Oh, and there’s poop to clean — lots of poop.

Starting off, the handler clarifies that although their work is for Waymo vehicles, they actually report to a third-party company called Transdev US, which handles the messy logistics behind the autonomous cabs. (Neither company commented on Bay Area Current‘s interview.)

Per the worker, Transdev’s hiring process amounts to a kind of Soylent Green approach to human resources, in which dozens of contractors are rounded up sight unseen, onboarded en masse, and then culled from the herd when they inevitably fall behind.

“There’s no interview process,” the worker explained. “They weed people out over time based on whether or not you can keep up with that process and adapt really quickly.”

After that rapid-fire orientation, workers can be assigned to various Waymo facilities all over their home city, with job duties rotating on a daily basis.

“Who gets placed in those specific jobs gets decided by managers the day of,” the robotaxi handler told Bay Area Current. “So your job changes every day depending on how much experience you have, how long you’ve been there, and how friendly you are with the managers.”

Sometimes those roles involve troubleshooting — updating software, cleaning sensors, and uploading Waymo data to company servers. It also includes unsticking Waymos when they clog up traffic, which is becoming a frequent occurrence in San Francisco. That can put workers in a precarious situation in which they have to choose whether to follow company orders not to interfere with a piece of tech still in its infancy.

“The policy for Transdev and Waymo is actually to let [the car] sit there and figure it out, because if we disengage it whenever there’s an issue, then the cars don’t have a chance to figure out the issue itself,” the worker explained. “But when it gets really bad, then we have to — what are you going to do? There’s 50 cars all stuck and people off the street yelling at us and threatening us.”

Other times, handlers can be assigned to cleaning tasks. This becomes especially unpleasant near the end of the week, when weekend revelers leave all kinds of nasty surprises for handlers to mop up.

“Typically that’s when there’s the most throw-up, the most disgusting things in the back,” the handler told Bay Area Current. “Even poop, there’s a lot of cleaning up poop. Way more than you think.”

“One time there were two pig heads in the backseat of the car and the cleaner had to clean it up,” the worker continued. “I assume they just went to the market to make a stew or something, but they forgot their pig heads. They were just rolling around in the back of the car.”

This worker’s arduous experience wrangling Waymos in San Francisco may just a taste of things to come as robotaxis hit the streets across the US.

Uber Abruptly Ends Operations in Africa, Abandoning Drivers and Riders Mid-Trip

4 September 2026 at 13:32

Uber drivers and their passengers across Nigeria and Uganda were shocked on Wednesday when the platform abruptly ceased operations in the middle of the day — and, in some cases, even mid-trip.

According to reporting by the Register, the “Uber rapture,” as it’s come to be known, came with little warning — an email notice sent on the very same day.

“We are writing to share some difficult news,” Uber’s email to Nigerian users went, per a screenshot obtained by the outlet TechCabal. “After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September, 2026.”

Of course, the deluge of corporate communiques delivered via email in this day and age means an important memo like this could be easily ignored, if not relegated to the spam folder automatically.

Case in point, the same-day memo did little to prepare drivers or riders for the deactivation, prompting waves of outrage on social media when the Uber app was shut off, seemingly out of nowhere.

“The Uber rapture is wild! Drivers and riders were mid-trip when it happened,” wrote Nigerian journalist Anita Eboigbe in a post on social media. “Insane!”

Another commentator wrote that a “friend of mine said they were on a ride when they got the message. She told the driver and he said ‘it’s a lie!’ The drivers who depend on it for livelihood had absolutely no idea.”

“The app shut down mid-trip,” another account located in Nigeria explained in a comment on X-formerly-Twitter. “They never gave a heads-up or hinted at them leaving the landscape. I had done a delivery that same morning and about an hour later, we all got emails saying they were leaving immediately.”

It’s a dramatic step for Uber, which had been operating in Nigeria since 2014, and Uganda’s capital city of Kampala since 2016.

“This decision is limited strictly to these two markets and does not impact our operations across the rest of the continent,” the rideshare company said in a statement to the Register. “Uber remains deeply committed to sub-Saharan Africa, where we continue to see robust growth and long-term opportunity.”

Tesla Driver Killed After Self-Driving Mode Stops in the Middle of a Highway

3 September 2026 at 13:49

A Tesla running one of its self-driving modes was rear-ended after stopping in the middle of a Arizona highway, Electrek reports, with the driver found dead at the scene. Grimly, it’s not the first accident of its kind.

The crash occurred on October 31, 2025. According to local reports at the time, the 2020 Tesla Model 3 was struck by an F-350 pickup around 3 AM on the eastbound Loop 202 in Mesa, Arizona. None of the contemporaneous reports made note of whether the Tesla had one of its driver-assist systems engaged.

Electrek, however, managed to match the collision to a redacted crash report that Tesla provided in its filings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These were shared under a Standing General Order that requires automakers to report crashes involving a driver-assist system that’s considered to have an SAE Level 2 of automation or higher, meaning that it can partially drive itself under the right conditions and with constant supervision.

The report states that an automated driving system — either Autopilot or Full Self-Driving — was “verified engaged” during the accident. The vehicle’s “pre-crash movement” is listed as “stopped – 0 mph,” indicating it stopped in the middle of the road. None of these details were shared publicly at the time of the accident.

Electrek says that this is the second time that a Tesla Model 3 with a driver-assist system engaged apparently stopped in a highway before a crash that killed its driver; it also happened in Florida, just weeks before the second one.

What happened is unclear. Tesla’s self-driving software has a well-known “phantom braking” problem that causes the cars to brake unexpectedly, but this is typically to slow the vehicle down, not stop it completely. Going from highway speeds to a grinding halt would be an extraordinary, if not unprecedented, example. It’s also possible that the driver fell asleep behind the wheel or experienced some kind of medical episode that rendered them unable to respond.

The upshot is that we’re more or less being kept in the dark. These details, and whether the car was running the now-obsolete Autopilot or its more advanced successor FSD is impossible to know, because Tesla censored that section of the crash report. It has long redacted crucial information in these reports reports under the guise of protecting “confidential business information,” a practice that is legal but rarely used to the extent that Tesla does. It has gotten in trouble with regulators for how it reports crashes, though. Last year, the NHTSA launched an investigation into Tesla for repeatedly failing to report crashes in time.

Researchers Alarmed as GPS Readings Suddenly Veer Off by 33 Feet, Enough to Crash Self-Driving Cars

1 September 2026 at 21:09

In November of last year, scientists warned of a “severe” solar storm, the strongest in over two decades, colliding with the Earth.

Solar storms are the result of a surge in solar activity, with the Sun unleashing a barrage of charged particles that can trigger spectacular auroras — and wreak havoc with communications satellites and radio signals — when they reach the Earth’s magnetosphere.

Beyond being ferocious enough to delay the launch of a Mars-bound NASA spacecraft, the storm wreaked absolute havoc with GPS systems back on the ground for hours at a time. As detailed in a new paper published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a team of scientists found that global navigation satellite systems experienced “significant positioning errors” of over 33 feet during the superstorm, “large enough to disrupt precision agriculture and autonomous transportation industries” across the continental United States.

That’s enough risk to warrant a careful study on these types of events can impact human activity on Earth.

“The results underscore the importance of accurate understanding of various space weather phenomena to enhance our predictive capabilities through coordinated observations and physics‐based modeling and ultimately reducing disruptions to RF applications during space weather events,” the paper reads.

The researchers analyzed observations from several scientific instruments spread out across the US to watch the chaos unfold last November. The Aurora Oval, a ring-shaped area of pronounced activity around the Earth’s geomagnetic north pole where auroras conventionally occur, was pushed south toward the equator. This triggered a “horizontally extended band of intense density gradients” in the upper atmosphere, causing fluctuations in how long signals take to travel through it.

The result: “significant positioning errors at mid-latitudes,” the researchers noted.

The researchers also found that as the auroras became brighter, the observed irregularities became more intense, deteriorating GPS accuracy accordingly.

Fortunately, while farming equipment like GPS-equipped tractors would’ve likely been affected, the November storm occurred long after the farming season concluded.

However, that wasn’t the case for the May 2024 superstorm, which scientists estimate cost farmers half a billion dollars in damages.

“Had the November superstorm occurred during the farming season in the American sector, it could have caused significant economic losses for the American farming industry, in addition to affecting the autonomous transportation industry,” the paper reads.

Airline Defends Decision to Fly Two Full Sized Passenger Jets So Close to a Packed Stadium That They Nearly Grazed the Roof

1 September 2026 at 14:05

The South African airline Airlink is defending its dramatic flyover of two full sized passenger jets that passed just yards above a packed stadium in Cape Town.

Footage of the ambitious stunt consumed social media, with multiple angles showing how closely the aircraft — two Embraer SA passenger jets — passed within the rooftop of the 55,000 capacity venue. It was a tight enough call that many saw it as a near-crash rather than a piece of precision maneuvering.

In response to the backlash, Airlink, which is backed by Qatar Airways, is reassuring that the flyover was super carefully planned and as safe as it could be.

“Airlink notes the concerns,” its statement began, in near perfect parody of corporate non-apologies.

“The two aircraft were flown by highly-experienced crew, with each comprised of three senior captains operating in the roles of commander, co-pilot and safety/technical officer,” it added, per multiple reports.

It insisted that the stunt “demanded careful planning and rehearsal” because of the low altitude and speed, stressing that it was approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority and the Air Traffic Navigation Services.

look how low this flyover looked. two airlink passenger jets just flew over dhl stadium in cape town ahead of the springboks vs. all blacks match. pic.twitter.com/5r5nB1j9ti

— Michael Rusch (@weeddude) August 29, 2026

Be that as it may, aviation experts were aghast at what they saw. The flight tracking platform Flightradar24 calculated that one of the planes flew within less than 50 feet of the stadium’s rooftop, where a rugby match between South Africa and New Zealand was being hosted. One of the planes also appeared to be flying much lower than the other, which could cut against the airline’s claims of how tightly controlled the stunt was.

“Hundreds of professional aviators around the world have looked at those images and expressed concern,” wrote Scott Bateman, a professional aviator and author, on X. He added that while the stunt may have been carefully planned, a “mature safety culture” should still be capable of admitting that “perhaps the margins were tighter than they needed to be.”

Keith Tonkin, an Australian aviation consultant, said that the Embraer SA passenger jets weren’t designed to fly that low.

“The bigger picture is that a benchmark has been established and others may expect to do something similar, and that’s not going to end well,” Tonkin told  The Associated Press. Unexpected turbulence or a bird strike, he warned, could’ve been disastrous.
