Palantir debuts 'war' data center in a container, full of Nvidia's B300 AI accelerators and open-weight models

2 August 2026 at 20:30
  • Palantir moves AI computing from distant clouds directly into combat zones
  • Containerized data centers process battlefield intelligence without permanent cloud connectivity
  • Nvidia B300 accelerators power deployable AI systems for frontline operations

Palantir Technologies and its infrastructure partner Armada have begun deploying mobile data centers built inside standard shipping containers for combat zones.

Each unit carries its own computing hardware, storage arrays, networking gear, and cooling systems needed to run advanced artificial intelligence models.

The servers run on Nvidia's B300 AI accelerators, while Palantir's modular AIP platform links the models directly into operational workflows and other company tools.

Processing power without a constant cloud link

Chad Wahlquist, a Forward Deployed Architect at Palantir Technologies, appeared inside one containerised data center during the July 2026 announcement introducing the mobile computing platform.

Unlike conventional cloud-based systems, these containerized units can process information without maintaining any constant connection to public cloud infrastructure.

They can also be fully isolated from external networks whenever operational security requirements demand a stricter level of separation at all times.

The outcome is a self-contained computing node able to analyze intelligence and sensor data right at the point where it is collected.

Distributed computing also offers stronger resilience than depending entirely on one single, centralized data center to run every operation across a wide area.

Losing contact with the cloud, or even losing one mobile node entirely, would not necessarily shut down the whole system.

Other units could keep processing information locally, since the entire network does not depend on one central point of failure.

Bringing AI closer to the battlefield

For military users, the concept brings advanced artificial intelligence much closer to sensors, field commanders, and units already deployed on the ground.

This reduces dependence on communications links that remain vulnerable to jamming, interception, or outright physical destruction during active combat operations.

Instead of sending every piece of battlefield data back to a distant cloud, analysis can occur inside a deployable container placed close to the action.

Alex Karp, the billionaire co-founder and chief executive of Palantir, has praised Ukraine's wartime innovation cycle as instructive for allies.

He has argued that the war is exposing a widening gap between military theory and the reality of modern combat.

Karp credited Ukrainian engineers and soldiers with adapting battlefield technology at a pace unmatched by most peacetime institutions worldwide.

He suggested that this rapid development cycle is teaching the United States and Europe lessons unavailable in traditional laboratories or think tanks.

Whether these containerized AI systems truly perform as promised under sustained combat stress remains an open question.

As of the time of writing, there is no public independent verification of the technology's actual battlefield performance by Palantir, Armada, or any military partner.

MacBook Neo Sales: The Story Behind the Numbers

2 August 2026 at 20:29

MacBook Neo sales have given Apple something the Mac rarely achieved through its premium models: immediate access to the enormous market for affordable everyday notebooks.

The new line arrived in March 2026 with a launch price of $599, or $499 through education pricing. That placed a current MacBook within reach of buyers who previously depended on discounted older models, inexpensive Windows laptops or Chromebooks.

Price opened the door, but appearance helped people walk through it. MacBook Neo entered the market in blush, indigo, silver and citrus, avoiding the visual compromises commonly associated with entry-level computers. The aluminum enclosure, color-matched keyboard and 13-inch Liquid Retina display made it look like a deliberate new Mac rather than a reduced MacBook Air.

Those choices changed the conversation around an affordable Apple notebook. Buyers could select a computer according to personality and style before considering processor benchmarks. Students could carry something visibly different from institutional gray and black laptops. Families could distinguish multiple computers by color, while first-time Mac owners received a product with its own identity.

Early shipment estimates suggest that strategy worked. IDC data shared with TechCrunch placed MacBook Neo shipments at approximately 1.1 million units during the March quarter, even though the computer had been available for only about three weeks. Apple does not disclose sales by individual Mac model, so the figure remains an independent market estimate rather than an official unit count.

The pace was nevertheless substantial enough to make MacBook Neo one of the strongest recent Mac introductions. It also pushed the story beyond one successful product launch. Apple had entered a price segment responsible for tens of millions of notebook purchases each year and found customers who had never seriously considered macOS.

MacBook Neo Sales Started With a Missing Price Tier

Apple spent years concentrating the MacBook line above the mainstream notebook market. MacBook Air became the accessible model, but its price still placed it beyond many students, families and buyers in countries where local income and currency conversion make Apple hardware especially expensive.

Discounted older MacBook Air generations partially filled that gap. Retailers could keep M1, M2 or M3 models available after newer versions arrived, offering buyers lower prices without Apple designing a dedicated entry-level computer.

That approach had limitations. Availability depended on remaining inventory, configurations varied among retailers and the product still looked like a previous generation being cleared from the channel. It could attract value-conscious buyers, but it did not establish a permanent starting point for the Mac.

MacBook Neo created that starting point. Apple designed the model around an A18 Pro chip rather than the M-series processors used by MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. The base configuration included 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage, enough for browsing, school assignments, communication, streaming and everyday productivity without competing directly with higher-performance Macs.

The model retained features that buyers encounter every day: an aluminum body, a 13-inch high-resolution display, a Magic Keyboard, a large Multi-Touch trackpad, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera and a fanless design. Apple rated its battery for as long as 16 hours under its testing conditions.

Performance headroom, memory capacity and external-display support remain more limited than on a MacBook Air. Those compromises are easier to accept when the computer is purchased for writing, research, web applications, video calls and media consumption rather than professional video production or complex development work.

IDC estimated that the sub-$700 segment represented about 75 million annual notebook shipments, close to 40% of global notebook volume. Windows and ChromeOS historically controlled more than 95% of that tier. Apple had been competing for a small premium section of the market while a far larger pool of buyers purchased elsewhere.

MacBook Neo sales gave the company a way into that pool without placing an old design or plastic enclosure at the entrance to the Mac line. A buyer comparing computers at similar prices could now choose macOS without first accepting a major premium.

Color Gave the Affordable MacBook an Identity

Low-cost laptops are frequently designed to disappear. Dark plastic, conservative finishes and generic bodies keep manufacturing simple and reduce the risk that one color will remain unsold. MacBook Neo took the opposite approach by making color one of the most recognizable parts of the product.

Silver preserves a familiar Mac appearance, while indigo offers a darker alternative without returning to standard black. Blush gives the line a softer finish, and citrus creates the visual signature that separates Neo from every other MacBook on a table.

The colors do more than decorate an inexpensive computer. They prevent the model from being defined entirely by what it lacks. Instead of asking why it has an A18 Pro rather than an M5, buyers can begin with which finish they want.

That distinction is valuable among younger customers. IDC described reactions from teenagers who focused on the display, weight and appearance rather than memory specifications or processor architecture. Their interest centered on how the computer would look at school compared with the Windows laptops and Chromebooks already around them.

Apple used a similar strategy when color helped turn the original iMac into a cultural object. Later iBook models carried bright finishes into portable computing, while colorful iMac and MacBook designs made personal computers feel less institutional. MacBook Neo revisits that idea for a generation accustomed to selecting colors for phones, headphones, cases and watches.

The approach also avoids making affordability look like punishment. A lower price does not force the buyer into an anonymous product with a visibly cheaper exterior. Neo has limitations, but its design gives owners something exclusive to the line instead of presenting the computer as a substitute for the MacBook they could not afford.

Color alone did not produce MacBook Neo sales. The launch price, battery life, macOS integration and recognizable MacBook construction carried more purchasing weight. Color made those advantages easier to notice and gave stores a product that could attract attention before a salesperson explained its specifications.

Four closed Apple MacBook Neo laptops are arranged in a grid, each in a different color: silver (top left), pink (top right), dark blue (bottom left), and yellow (bottom right), all seen from above.

First-Time Buyers Changed the Mac Equation

Apple said customer response exceeded its expectations and connected the launch with record participation from people buying their first Mac. That audience may prove more valuable than existing owners choosing a less expensive replacement.

A first Mac purchase can introduce a customer to applications and services that become part of daily work. People who already use an iPhone can access Messages, FaceTime, Photos, iCloud, AirDrop and iPhone Mirroring from the computer without rebuilding their digital routines.

That familiarity lowers one of the barriers to changing computer platforms. A person may have used Windows throughout school or work while carrying an iPhone for years. MacBook Neo makes the switch less financially demanding, while the connected features reduce the amount of relearning required after purchase.

MacBook Neo sales also challenge the assumption that low-cost notebook buyers care only about the lowest available price. Many customers are willing to spend more than the cost of an entry Chromebook when the difference provides a better display, metal construction, longer useful life or closer integration with a phone.

The line is therefore competing on perceived value rather than absolute cheapness. A $599 launch price remains expensive beside the least costly education laptops, but it enters the same purchasing discussion as many mainstream Windows models. It no longer requires a buyer to stretch directly toward MacBook Air pricing.

Education represents a particularly large opportunity. Schools and families make purchases around durability, battery life, software management, support requirements and the number of years a computer can remain useful. A lower acquisition price gives the Mac a better chance of surviving the first stage of that calculation.

Small businesses face similar decisions. A company that previously reserved Macs for designers or executives can consider Neo for administrative work, communication and browser-based services. Wider Mac deployment then becomes possible without assigning a premium notebook to every employee.

MacBook Neo sales may also protect Apple from depending entirely on upgrades. Mature computer owners can keep a capable Mac for many years, extending replacement cycles. Bringing new people onto the platform creates additional demand without waiting for an existing MacBook Air or MacBook Pro to become obsolete.

Worldwide Adoption Is the Larger Story

The geographic distribution of the first units shows both progress and unfinished work. IDC estimated that 44% of March-quarter shipments went to the United States. That concentration is unsurprising for an Apple launch, but the larger opportunity sits in markets where Mac adoption has remained limited by price.

India offers an early example. Approximately 18,000 units reportedly shipped there during the short March launch period, while retailers later experienced difficulty obtaining enough inventory. The local starting price of ₹69,900 remained above the direct currency conversion of the U.S. price, yet it sat far below the ₹119,900 entry point reported for MacBook Air at the time.

Older MacBook Air generations had previously generated Indian sales when retailers offered substantial discounts. Neo gives Apple and its partners a current model to promote throughout the year rather than depending on irregular clearance inventory.

Availability timing will influence adoption elsewhere. The computer reached some markets later than the initial launch, including Indonesia in May. Local taxes, currency movements, distribution capacity and supply allocation can produce a very different value proposition from one country to another.

Independent forecasts remain optimistic despite severe pressure across the PC industry. TrendForce projected Apple notebook shipments could grow 7.7% during 2026 and estimated that MacBook Neo could reach between 4 million and 5 million units. IDC later said stronger-than-expected demand from the model contributed to an upward revision of its notebook forecast.

Those gains are occurring while memory shortages and rising component costs are pushing much of the computer industry toward higher prices. IDC expects worldwide PC shipments to contract during 2026, making Apple expansion unusual in a market where many manufacturers are reducing configurations and protecting margins.

Supply control helped Apple enter the lower tier at a difficult moment. The company already designs the A18 Pro, uses a highly standardized configuration and purchases components at enormous scale. That structure gave it more room to assemble a focused notebook without relying on a separate processor vendor for the central chip.

Recent Mac price increases caused by rising memory costs may test how much of the early advantage Apple can preserve. Neo depends on remaining close enough to mainstream notebooks that first-time buyers continue placing it on the same shortlist. A widening price gap would return the Mac to the premium territory the new line was created to escape.

The next evidence will arrive through education purchasing cycles and expansion in price-sensitive countries. A personal citrus or blush MacBook can win attention in a store, but deployments across schools and small businesses will depend on supply, local pricing, management costs and useful life. The first semester filled classrooms with individual Neo buyers; the coming academic year will reveal whether entire institutions are ready to replace rows of gray laptops with macOS.

macOS Hidden Treasures: Quick Look

Startup backed by the world's largest battery maker just launched a supercheap mini PC that competes with Nvidia's $5000 AI DGX Spark PC

2 August 2026 at 19:05
  • Tiny desktop system claims massive language model performance at dramatically lower costs
  • Proprietary G≡LIX 1 chip delivers 700 TOPS for local AI workloads
  • Agent Box runs advanced AI models entirely without relying on cloud services

Singapore-based startup Acrab has unveiled the Agent Box, a mini PC built to run 100 billion parameter language models entirely on local hardware.

The device is powered by a proprietary chip called G≡LIX 1, manufactured using a 5nm process for efficient edge computing.

Acrab claims the system delivers performance close to Nvidia's $5,000 DGX Spark while cutting costs to roughly one-fifth and halving power consumption.

A custom chip built for local AI workloads

The G≡LIX 1 processor combines a 20-core Arm CPU, a GPU rated at 3 TFLOPS, and a multicore neural processing unit tuned specifically for large language model inference.

It draws on 273GB/s of high-bandwidth unified memory alongside an 8MB L1 cache and a 768GB/s L2 cache.

Acrab says the chip reaches 700 TOPS of processing power while keeping the entire system compact enough to sit on a desk.

The NPU is balanced against the general-purpose compute unit, and VAE vector acceleration reportedly speeds up attention processing by up to three times.

Beyond the core processor, the SoC integrates a video DSP cluster, multiple camera input subsystems, and a high-resolution display engine within a single unified architecture.

In internal testing, the company recorded a prefill rate of 1,416.8 tokens per second under a Gemma 26B A4B configuration with a 40K KV cache and a 10K token input.

That compares with 188.9 tokens per second on an Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro, representing a claimed 7.5 times improvement in prefill speed over conventional consumer hardware.

"Generative AI helped people find answers. Agentic AI will help them get things done,” said Dr. Ken Phua, CEO of Acrab.

Software ecosystem expands beyond the hardware

Beyond the hardware specifications, Acrab says Agent Box includes a complete software platform featuring AI runtimes, developer toolchains, operating system capabilities, reference designs, and orchestration software for autonomous agents.

Demonstrations released by the company showed voice commands automatically creating and printing 3D models, operating robotic vacuum cleaners, and interacting with connected devices including smart lights, smart air conditioners, and smart locks.

Acrab says keeping inference on the device can reduce token costs, protect sensitive information locally, maintain operation during limited internet connectivity, and provide persistent memory for personalised AI assistants.

The company also plans to extend its computing platform into AI NAS systems, network-attached storage systems, industrial robots, service robots, and smart vehicles through partnerships with hardware manufacturers.

Although Acrab has disclosed limited corporate information, copyright notices accompanying its announcement reference CATL, the world's largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer.

If that relationship accurately reflects financial backing, the announcement could attract additional attention because of CATL's scale and resources.

“Our goal is to give device makers and developers the foundation to bring agentic intelligence into many different products and environments,” Dr. Phua said.

“Agent Box demonstrates what the technology can do today, while GΞLIX 1 and our full-stack platform are designed to support a much broader ecosystem of devices and applications.”

Could Seagate follow Micron? 90% of its hard drive capacity is going to enterprise, with customers scrambling to secure HDDs in 2029

2 August 2026 at 18:15
  • AI growth keeps enterprise hard drive demand climbing across global cloud infrastructure
  • Cloud providers continue expanding storage despite massive investment in AI accelerators
  • Enterprise storage remains essential as artificial intelligence generates unprecedented data volumes

Enterprise demand for high-capacity hard drives continues accelerating as artificial intelligence generates expanding datasets requiring reliable, affordable storage throughout increasingly complex cloud environments.

That growing appetite for storage has intensified competition among cloud providers building artificial intelligence infrastructure, keeping enterprise hard drives firmly within long-term investment plans.

Seagate's recent fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 financial results indicate continued demand from cloud data center customers despite no disclosure of future HDD allocation commitments.

Enterprise customers continue driving demand for mass-capacity HDDs

AI relies heavily on enormous storage capacity because valuable data must remain available long after computations are done.

As organisations deploy larger AI models, the amount of stored information grows alongside computing requirements.

This significantly increases the dependence on enterprise hard drives for economical long-term retention.

Unfortunately, HDDs are becoming harder to secure, with manufacturers already booking long-term supply commitments years in advance.

Many HDD manufacturers have locked in contracts extending into 2028 and 2029, meaning customers wanting drives that far out may already be shut out of available slots

Seagate said robust cloud data center demand kept driving business growth, tying stronger storage purchases to AI infrastructure expanding across global markets.

"As AI accelerates data generation and its value, we see durable long-term demand for mass capacity storage," said Dave Mosley, Seagate's chair and chief executive officer.

Seagate expects strengthening exabyte demand through its Mozaic platform and differentiated HAMR technology roadmap as enterprise deployments continue expanding worldwide.

While Mosley did not explicitly say customers are reserving Seagate's hard drive production through 2029, his remarks make clear that enterprise demand now sits at the core of the company's strategy.

Financial performance supports the broader storage story

Seagate's latest financial results provide additional evidence supporting enterprise storage demand.

Its annual revenue increased during fiscal 2026, while Q4 performance exceeded company expectations for revenue.

Operating cash flow reached $3.7 billion during fiscal 2026, while free cash flow totalled $3.1 billion after fourth-quarter operating cash flow reached $1.3 billion.

Seagate also reduced total debt by $1.4 billion during fiscal 2026, including $302 million during the fourth quarter, ending with outstanding debt of $3.6 billion.

Cash and cash equivalents reached $1.7 billion, while ordinary shares outstanding totalled 227 million and directors approved a quarterly dividend of $0.74 per share.

Seagate expects first quarter fiscal 2027 revenue near $4.1 billion alongside non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of approximately $7.30, subject to stated variations.

"Seagate's strong fourth quarter exceeded our expectations for revenue and non-GAAP EPS, capping a fiscal 2026 in which we grew,” Mosley said.

“Our performance is being driven by robust cloud data center demand and disciplined execution, and we see the momentum continuing in 2027."

Seagate’s rival, Micron, already made the move that Seagate is currently hinting at. It exited its Crucial consumer RAM businesslin 2025 to redirect supply toward enterprise customers.

Micron said the shift was meant to "improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments," cutting consumer buyers off from a manufacturer they had relied on for years.

Seagate has not gone that far with hard drives, but Mosley's insistence that cloud demand is driving the business suggests it could prioritise enterprise demand if current trends continue.

Apple Podcasts Is a Perfect Match for CarPlay

By: Hannah
2 August 2026 at 17:28

Apple Podcasts runs within CarPlay, Apple’s in-car software platform for accessing compatible iPhone apps through a vehicle’s display and controls. CarPlay provides the driving environment, while Podcasts supplies the programs, episodes, library and playback features available inside it.

That combination suits a part of the day that often feels wasted. A commute may be too fragmented for reading or watching something, but it can provide enough uninterrupted time for a news briefing, interview, documentary series or comedy show.

Podcasts also give each journey a different character. The morning drive can offer information before work, while the return trip can provide lighter entertainment or continue a longer story. Drivers are free to choose whether the time should be useful, relaxing or simply less repetitive.

Apple Podcasts Fits Naturally Inside CarPlay

Apple Podcasts appears alongside other compatible audio apps when an iPhone connects to CarPlay. The vehicle display offers access to available episodes and essential controls without reproducing the complete iPhone interface on the dashboard.

The distinction is simple: Apple Podcasts does not create or power CarPlay. It is an audio app designed to operate within the wider CarPlay experience, which also handles navigation, calls, messages and other supported services.

CarPlay reduces podcast playback to the functions most appropriate in a vehicle. Drivers can use the Now Playing screen, CarPlay Dashboard, steering-wheel controls or buttons provided by the vehicle. Available commands can include playing, pausing, jumping back 15 seconds, moving forward 30 seconds and changing playback speed.

Siri provides another way to manage audio while keeping attention on the road. A driver can request a followed show, pause the current episode or continue listening without searching through the display. Support varies according to the vehicle and its controls, but the app remains connected to the iPhone rather than operating as a separate system installed by the automaker.

The interface is especially suitable for spoken audio. Songs can often continue without intervention, while a podcast listener may want to replay an explanation, skip part of an episode or resume a program interrupted earlier. CarPlay keeps those common controls accessible without placing the full Podcasts app in front of the driver.

Three devices display a talk show: a smartphone and tablet show a woman with long wavy hair speaking into a microphone, while another smartphone streams the apple podcasts video of a man with long hair playing guitar in a studio setting.

The Commute Becomes a Listening Window

A regular route creates a predictable amount of listening time. Someone with a 15-minute drive may prefer concise news, business updates or language lessons. A 40-minute journey provides room for detailed interviews, investigative reporting or serialized fiction.

Apple Podcasts includes programs covering education, technology, culture, history, sports, health and entertainment. The variety allows listeners to build different routines around the same drive rather than depending on one radio schedule or repeatedly hearing familiar music.

A morning episode can provide context for events likely to shape the working day. On the way home, comedy and conversational programs can create distance from work before the listener reaches the front door. Neither choice requires treating every available minute as a productivity exercise.

The format can also make traffic less frustrating. A delayed journey remains inconvenient, but an episode gives the driver something continuous to follow as the arrival time changes. Spoken stories can hold attention without asking the driver to look away from navigation or the road.

Apple Podcasts keeps longer programs useful even when they do not fit into one trip. Listening progress can synchronize across compatible devices using the same Apple Account, allowing an episode started at home to continue in the car or resume later on another device.

Preparation Makes CarPlay Listening Better

The safest podcast decision is usually the one made before the car starts moving. Apple Podcasts allows listeners to follow shows, download episodes and arrange a queue on the iPhone in advance. CarPlay can then concentrate on playback instead of discovery.

A prepared queue is useful when several episodes are planned for one journey. The next selection can begin automatically after the current program ends, removing the temptation to search through categories while driving. Listeners can combine a short briefing with a longer interview or place lighter material after a demanding program.

Downloads make the experience more reliable. Saved episodes can continue playing through areas with weak cellular coverage, including rural roads, tunnels and underground parking structures. Downloading through Wi-Fi can also prevent a long daily routine from consuming unnecessary mobile data.

Automatic downloads can keep recent episodes from followed shows ready for the next drive. Storage still requires attention, especially when subscriptions publish frequently, but played downloads can be removed automatically according to the selected Podcasts settings.

Playback speed provides another form of control. Faster playback can help a listener finish a familiar news format within a shorter trip, while normal or slower speeds may suit technical discussions, unfamiliar accents or narrative programs where delivery forms part of the experience.

Next Generation CarPlay Porsche

Listening Continues After the Car Stops

CarPlay does not create a separate podcast library inside the vehicle. It extends the listening activity already connected to the iPhone, preserving followed shows, saved programs and playback position when the drive ends.

That continuity prevents commute listening from becoming isolated. A listener can discover and prepare episodes on an iPhone, hear part of one through CarPlay and continue later on a Mac or another compatible device. Downloads remain stored on the device that received them, while supported library information and progress can synchronize through the Apple Account.

Commute length can eventually shape a personal programming schedule. A 12-minute daily news show may fit the morning route almost exactly, while a 45-minute interview can cover both directions with the remaining section ready for the following day. The queue can change with the calendar, leaving shorter episodes for busy mornings and deeper programs for the roads that provide enough time to hear them properly.

Origin of Time Tested in Experiment With Mini-Universe

A physicist built a mini-universe out of cold atoms and used it to test where time comes from. It made big headlines a few weeks ago, and I almost skipped it, as most "universe in a lab" stories are nonsense. But then I actually read the paper. Let's take a look.
