Three years ago, when the women's World Cup kicked off in Australia and New Zealand, my social feeds were in a strange place. Twitter had just transformed into X, newcomer Threads was seemingly ascendant, and places like Bluesky had yet to garner much momentum. It left me with an odd, and admittedly silly, dilemma: I had nowhere good to post dumb jokes during games. And now, as the next World Cup is set to begin across Canada, the US, and Mexico, not much has changed.

There were a lot of problems with Twitter even when it was at its most popular, but it also introduced a new kind of live experience for many. Its real-time nature and huge au …

In critical infrastructure, its quieter function is often more consequential: it distributes precise time that helps far-flung systems agree on when something happened. That shared time base supports cellular and broadband networks, parts of the electric grid, and regulated timekeeping […]

At about 318 times Earth’s mass and orbiting far beyond Mars, it acts as a gravitational gatekeeper, tugging on asteroids and comets that might otherwise stay put or never reach the inner planets. Remove Jupiter from the picture and Earth’s impact environment would change in complicated ways. It would […]

If Earth Vanishes What Happens to the Moon?

27 February 2026 at 13:17

If Earth disappeared instantaneously, the first thing that would not happen is a crash. The Moon is not β€œhanging” over Earth. It is in constant free fall, moving sideways fast enough that Earth’s gravity bends its path into a closed orbit. The Moon orbits Earth in the prograde direction. It completes one revolution relative to […]

12 October 2025 at 12:58

In 2024, the small chapel at the Protestant church in Lucerne, Switzerland, housed the Deus in Machina installation, where visitors could sit across from an animated β€œAI Jesus” and pose their questions, and the machine had texts from the Bible and writings from Christian theologians at its disposal to answer their questions. Almost 900 people […]
