20 October 2026 at 15:36

Software do HomePod 27.2

Sound Glow will work on HomePod mini 1, HomePod mini 2 and HomePod (2nd generation)!

In HomePod Software 27.2 RC, the LightShowCapability check is “productType > 1,” so only the original HomePod is unsupported. https://t.co/KwMrrAx7rf

O Sound Glow funcionará no HomePod mini 1 [sic], HomePod mini 2 e HomePod (segunda geração)!

All HomePod models will support the Lock Controls setting, according to HomePod software 27.2 RC.

You should see the setting in the Home app after updating both HomePod and iPhone. https://t.co/lAPVuRg3av

audioOS 27.2 confirms that Whole Room Audio (Party Mode) is a secondary “diffuse” rendering mode for surround sound, so you’ll need the new Apple TV 4K.

The feature has an interesting implementation: it gives diagonally opposite HomePods the same L/R stereo role.

You’ll get new audio controls when you set up four HomePods with the new Apple TV.

Speaker Mode: Surround Sound or Whole Room Audio.

Specifically for Surround Sound:
• Spatialize Stereo: Control whether to play a spatially processed mix for video and music. As reported in… pic.twitter.com/KDzUeu3VpU

— pdfu (@itspdfu) October 19, 2026

tvOS 27.2 allows you to shuffle through available Screen Savers throughout the day.

You can also set up Memories & Slideshows or Portraits screen savers on iPhone or iPad without sharing your whole library.

The features were announced in the Apple TV 4K press release. pic.twitter.com/1VNsCBzymi

AirPods 5 bring stronger open-ear noise cancellation and smarter listening features

16 September 2026 at 23:51

AirPods 5 bring Active Noise Cancellation to Apple’s most affordable current AirPods while pushing the open-ear design closer to capabilities previously associated with more expensive models. The new generation starts at $129 and uses redesigned acoustics and computational audio to remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation.

Apple is also splitting the range into two versions. The standard $129 AirPods 5 include ANC and USB-C charging, while a $149 model adds a Wireless Charging Case, longer battery life, a case speaker for Find My, and volume adjustment directly from the stems.

Both models are available for preorder ahead of their September 18 release in the U.S. and more than 65 other countries and regions.

The changes make the distinction between Apple’s entry-level AirPods and its more advanced headphones less dependent on headline software features. Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio, Live Translation, and Siri AI are all part of the AirPods 5 experience.

A person wearing a green and white sweater and wireless AirPods 5 sits at a table, focused on something in front of them, with an older man sitting nearby in a sunlit room with green window frames and indoor plants. The noise cancellation of their Apple earbuds allows them to concentrate fully despite the gentle hum of activity around them.

AirPods 5 push open-ear ANC further

Active Noise Cancellation is particularly difficult to implement in an open-ear earbud because there is no silicone tip forming a physical seal inside the ear canal.

Apple has approached that limitation with a new multiport acoustic architecture, revised computational audio algorithms, and the H2 headphone chip. The company says AirPods 5 can cancel up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC.

That improvement does not turn the design into an AirPods Pro-style sealed earbud. AirPods 5 remain open-ear headphones, retaining the fit preferred by people who dislike the pressure or isolation associated with in-ear tips.

The acoustic system has also been redesigned around a wider variety of ear shapes. Next-generation Adaptive EQ continuously adjusts sound based on how each earbud sits, while Apple says the revised architecture produces richer and more detailed playback.

Transparency mode has been updated to reproduce voices and environmental sounds more naturally. Adaptive Audio can move between Transparency and noise cancellation according to surrounding conditions, while Conversation Awareness automatically reduces media volume when the wearer begins speaking to someone nearby.

Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking remains supported for compatible music, movies, and other content.

AirPods 5 are rated IP57 for dust, sweat, and water resistance, making them better suited to workouts and changing weather conditions, although they are not waterproof.

Two AirPods 5 models create a meaningful $20 decision

Apple’s pricing makes the $149 Wireless Charging Case version more than a different charging option.

Standard AirPods 5 provide up to four hours of listening on one charge with ANC enabled and up to 20 hours when the USB-C case is included.

AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case increase those figures to five hours from the earbuds and up to 22 hours with the case while ANC is active.

The upgraded case can charge through USB-C, an Apple Watch charger, or a Qi-certified wireless charger. It also contains a speaker that can assist with locating the case through Find My.

The more expensive model introduces another difference directly on the earbuds. Users can swipe up or down on a stem to adjust volume, bringing a control familiar from AirPods Pro to Apple’s open-ear form factor.

That leaves buyers with a relatively straightforward tradeoff. The $129 version provides the central audio experience, including ANC, without requiring a step up for the main listening features. Spending another $20 adds more convenient charging, slightly longer battery life, Find My assistance from the case speaker, and physical volume adjustment.

Placing either AirPods 5 model in its charging case for five minutes provides about one additional hour of listening.

Two white Apple earbuds, resembling the latest AirPods 5, are shown on a plain light background, displaying their sleek, curved design and black speaker grilles. The earbud on the right has an “R” marking, indicating it is for the right ear. These earbuds feature open-ear noise cancellation for an immersive listening experience.

Siri AI and Live Translation extend the earbuds beyond music

AirPods 5 arrive as Apple makes voice interaction a larger part of the AirPods experience.

When paired with a compatible iPhone, Siri AI can be accessed hands-free. The assistant can work with personal context from information such as messages, emails, and photos, respond to open-ended questions, and perform supported actions in apps.

Head gestures remain part of the experience. Users can nod to accept certain Siri prompts or shake their head to decline them, allowing calls and notifications to be handled without speaking or touching the earbuds.

Live Translation provides another use for the microphones and ANC system.

After compatible languages are downloaded and the feature is configured through Apple’s Translate app, a user can hear another person’s speech translated through AirPods. Translation can be started through Siri, the iPhone Action button, the Translate app, or by pressing and holding both AirPods stems simultaneously.

When two people are each using compatible AirPods and supported iPhones, both participants can hear translated versions of the conversation in their chosen languages.

Live Translation requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro or later, compatible AirPods, current software, and the latest AirPods firmware, with availability varying by language and region. Apple also notes that generated translations can contain errors, making verification appropriate when accuracy is especially significant.

AirPods 5 narrow the gap within the lineup

The fifth-generation model represents a different kind of upgrade from simply adding another listening mode.

ANC is now standard across both AirPods 5 configurations, instead of requiring buyers to choose a separate ANC version as they did with AirPods 4. Apple has then moved the pricing distinction toward charging, battery endurance, Find My hardware, and physical controls.

The earbuds continue to use Bluetooth 5.3 and the H2 chip, with dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, optical in-ear detection, motion and speech accelerometers, and force sensors built into the stems.

Each earbud weighs 4.3 grams, preserving the lightweight character of the open-ear line despite the additional capabilities.

The new acoustic architecture may be the more consequential change over time. Open-ear earbuds cannot rely on a tight seal to block surrounding sound, so gains in ANC depend heavily on microphone placement, acoustic design, fit, and real-time processing. Apple’s claim of up to 50% more noise removal over the previous generation represents a substantial step for that format rather than simply matching the behavior of sealed earbuds.

AirPods 5 start at $129, while AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149. Both reach stores on September 18, giving the open-ear AirPods line a standard feature set that now includes noise cancellation without pushing buyers to a higher-priced model to get it.

A white wireless earbud charging case, designed for Apple earbuds, is shown with a round magnetic charging cable positioned nearby, ready to connect. The background is plain and light-colored, emphasizing the sleek look and advanced features such as noise cancellation.

Adobe Premiere e After Effects ganham novos recursos de IA

9 September 2026 at 16:00

10 August 2026 at 20:12

New in Claude Code: your sessions can now message each other.

Instead of having to re-explain yourself in another session, you can now tell Claude to do it. It sends a summary (not your history or files), and the other session picks it up mid-task. pic.twitter.com/PtNsfXeQXP

— ClaudeDevs (@ClaudeDevs) August 7, 2026

No, Apple won’t turn on any ‘restricted mode’ for missed lease payments

28 July 2026 at 23:35

Apple logo

Apple will not limit the functionality of devices enrolled in its new Upgrade leasing program if customers miss payments or default on the agreement. In an emailed statement to The Verge, Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery said: “There will be no restricted mode and/or there will be no limitations put on device functionality due to missed payments or default with the Apple Upgrade program.”

The clarification follows reporting from 9to5Mac, which identified code in an iOS 27 beta referring to a new “App Managed Features” system. According to that reporting, the system would have allowed financial partners to perform ongoing status checks on a device and enabled Apple’s system services to place it into “Restricted Mode” if the owner was not in good financial standing. Restricted Mode, as described, would have blocked access to most apps while leaving core functions such as Phone, the App Store, Clock, Settings, and Wallet available.

Apple’s statement to The Verge directly addresses those concerns, stating that no such restrictions will be applied under the Upgrade program. The program itself allows customers to lease new iPhones, Macs, iPads, and other devices with the option to upgrade periodically.

The confirmation provides reassurance that leased devices will retain full functionality even in cases of missed payments, distinguishing the Upgrade program from any potential remote management features that had been observed in early iOS 27 code.
‎
MacDailyNews Take: Apple has not explained to The Verge the intended purpose of Restricted Mode. One possibility is that the feature was built for financing programs run by carriers, retailers, or other partners outside the Apple Upgrade program—particularly in markets where device restrictions are already commonly used to enforce installment plans.

Clear and Tinted Icons Are a Hard Pass

16 July 2026 at 20:42

Adam Engst:

Of the TidBITS readers who chose to respond to the poll, only 1% said they use clear icons on the Mac, and no one admitted to using tinted icons. On the iPhone, clear icons were twice as popular—a whopping 2%—and just 1% of respondents said they use tinted icons. Dark icons, which retain color, were slightly more popular, but still couldn’t exceed single digits, with 6% on the Mac and 9% on the iPhone.

Squircle Jail is one thing; redesigning icons to be assembled within Icon Composer is another. The latter makes a lot less sense but for supporting clear and tinted icons.

“Apple Upgrade”: empresa poderá bloquear apps por pagamentos atrasados

22 July 2026 at 13:32

Ainda segundo as informações, o App Managed Features faz parte do app Buscar (Find My), embora o provedor não tenha acesso à localização do dispositivo.

Epigenetic Locking Drives H. pylori Gastric Cancer

24 June 2026 at 12:02

In a groundbreaking study published in Cell Death Discovery, researchers have unveiled a novel mechanism by which Helicobacter pylori, the notorious gastric pathogen, drives the formation and persistence of gastric cancer through a process termed the “hit-and-run” legacy. This research elucidates how transient infection by H. pylori delivers a lasting epigenetic imprint on gastric epithelial cells, effectively locking these cells into a survival mode that fosters oncogenesis. The implications of these findings are profound, offering fresh insights into the molecular interplay between infection-induced epigenetic modification and cancer development, which could pave the way for revolutionary diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Helicobacter pylori has long been established as a principal carcinogen associated with gastric cancer, a malignancy ranking among the world’s deadliest. Traditionally, the carcinogenic potential of H. pylori has been attributed to chronic inflammation and the persistent presence of bacterial virulence factors that continuously disrupt gastric mucosa homeostasis. However, the current study challenges this paradigm by demonstrating that even transient exposure to H. pylori can induce stable, heritable epigenetic alterations that effectively “lock” the cellular genome into an aberrant state, independent of ongoing infection. This “hit-and-run” mechanism underscores the importance of early, possibly even brief, pathogen-host interactions in cancer genesis.

At the heart of this discovery is the concept of epigenetic locking—a process through which transient signals induce durable modifications in DNA methylation and histone patterns, which subsequently enforce gene expression profiles conducive to cell survival and proliferation. The group led by Sun, Hu, and Traub employed state-of-the-art genome-wide methylation profiling alongside chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) to map the intricate epigenetic landscapes shaped by H. pylori infection. Their findings revealed a marked enrichment of repressive histone marks on tumor suppressor gene loci and a reduction in methylation at key oncogenic enhancers, a dual mechanism that effectively enables gastric epithelial cells to bypass apoptosis and adopt a resilient phenotype.

Intriguingly, the authors identified a “survival switch” embedded within the epigenetic circuitry, which perpetuates cell viability in the hostile gastric environment despite the absence of the pathogen. This survival pathway hinges on the modulation of several critical transcription factors and downstream effectors that drive resistance to oxidative stress and immune checkpoint evasion. The persistence of this switch presents a formidable barrier to therapeutic intervention, explaining the often-observed resistance and relapse seen in conventional anti-H. pylori and chemotherapeutic regimes.

The study further explores the timing and sequence of epigenetic alterations following H. pylori infection. Temporal analysis demonstrated that initial infection triggers a wave of epigenetic remodeling within days, with key changes becoming fixed in the genome over weeks, thus confirming the durability of the modifications. This rapid “imprinting” emphasizes the need for early detection and intervention post infection to prevent the establishment of irreversible oncogenic programs.

Mechanistically, the team delved into the role of bacterial virulence factors such as CagA and VacA in orchestrating these epigenetic changes. They postulate that CagA, upon translocation into host cells, interacts with host chromatin modifiers and signaling pathways like NF-kB and STAT3, initiating cascades that culminate in altered chromatin architecture. VacA further modulates cellular metabolism and stress responses, cumulatively fixing the epigenetic landscape conducive to cancer progression.

The implications of the “hit-and-run” model extend beyond H. pylori-induced gastric cancer, provoking reconsideration of how transient infections may contribute to other epigenetically driven malignancies. This paradigm shift advocates for a broader investigation into the long-term impact of infectious insults at the epigenome level, potentially revolutionizing the standard view of tumorigenesis associated with microbial pathogens.

Therapeutically, the study stimulates the development of epigenetic-targeted approaches aimed at “unlocking” these stable aberrations. By reversing methylation patterns or disrupting the survival networks sustained by epigenetic modifications, it may become possible to sensitize tumor cells to existing chemotherapies or to immune-mediated clearance. The prospect of integrating epigenetic therapy into the clinical management of H. pylori-associated gastric cancer represents a promising frontier.

Moreover, diagnostic innovation could also benefit from these findings. Epigenetic biomarkers identified through this research may serve as early indicators of cancer risk in patients with a history of H. pylori infection, enabling stratification and personalized surveillance. The early detection of epigenetic locking signatures in gastric mucosa could dramatically improve prognosis by facilitating timely therapeutic intervention.

The study’s comprehensive exploration of epigenetic changes was bolstered by the use of gastric organoids and in vivo models, which authentically recapitulated the cellular and tissue contexts of H. pylori infection. This multi-faceted experimental design lent robust physiological relevance to the findings and highlighted the dynamic interplay between pathogen factors and host epigenomic machinery.

Collectively, this research not only deciphers the cryptic molecular legacy left by H. pylori but also refines our understanding of infection-associated carcinogenesis. The “hit-and-run” legacy paradigm sheds light on the complex, often covert, mechanisms through which transient pathogen interactions exert long-lasting oncogenic effects, shifting both scientific insight and clinical approach.

In summary, the work by Sun, Hu, Traub, and colleagues heralds a new era in gastric cancer biology, emphasizing the critical role of infection-driven epigenetic programming. As further investigations build upon this foundation, multidisciplinary efforts encompassing microbiology, epigenetics, and cancer therapeutics will be essential to translate these insights into tangible clinical applications.

The future of combatting H. pylori-associated gastric cancer lies not only in eradicating the bacteria but also in decoding and reversing the epigenetic codes it inscribes. This endeavor carries the promise of transforming patient outcomes, potentially mitigating one of the world’s most lethal cancers with strategies born from the understanding of the pathogen’s epigenetic “hit-and-run” legacy.

Intel makes a bid for handheld gaming PCs with new Arc G3 processors

28 May 2026 at 18:10

Most of the Steam Deck imitators on the market right now use AMD silicon, specifically the Ryzen Z-series chips. These are the same chips AMD makes for regular laptops, but with different power settings better suited to a compact handheld system. There are handhelds based on Intel silicon (MSI’s Claw is the main one), but Intel hasn’t yet tried making silicon marketed specifically for that purpose.

Today, the company is throwing its hat in the ring with two Intel Arc G-series processors, which will allow gaming handhelds to leverage the company's genuinely quite good Arc B-series integrated GPUs. Intel says that several Arc G-series handhelds will arrive "starting in June 2026, with broader availability throughout the year." These systems will include a new MSI Claw model, a Predator Atlas 8 from Acer, and a device from OneXPlayer.

Intel normally uses its "Arc" branding for integrated and dedicated GPUs, but in this case, the "Arc" brand encompasses the entire chip, including the CPU, GPU, NPU, and other components.

Ars Asks: Share your shell and show us your tricked-out terminals!

I spend more time today than ever before interacting with terminal windows, which is something I don't think Past Me would have believed in the early '90s. Back then, poor MS-DOS was the staid whipping boy of the industry, and at least on the consumer side, graphical environments like Windows (and maybe even odder creatures like AmigaOS) seemed poised to stamp the command line into oblivion, leaving text interfaces behind as we all blasted into the ooey-GUI future.

As it turns out, though, the command line is still the best tool for some jobs—many jobs, in fact. I read a wise post some years ago (probably on Slashdot) arguing that a mouse-driven point-and-click interface essentially reduces the user to pointing at something on the screen and grunting, "DO! DO THAT!" at the computer. (The rise of right-click context menus adds the ability for the user to also grunt "MORE THINGS!" but doesn't otherwise add vocabulary.)

The command line, by contrast, gives the user the opportunity to precisely tell the computer what they want done, using words instead of one or two gestalts that the computer must interpret based on context.
