Tesla’s China business is flipping: sales down 12%, exports double

13 October 2026 at 15:57

Tesla sold 381,088 cars to Chinese buyers through the first nine months of 2026, down 11.9% from last year, according to CPCA data. Over the same period, Giga Shanghai’s exports more than doubled to 361,972 vehicles.

Nearly half of what Tesla builds in China now leaves China. And Beijing just announced it will cut the tax rebate on EV exports next year.

Tesla pauses Model 3 orders in Canada amid China EV quota

13 October 2026 at 15:07

Tesla has stopped taking orders for the Model 3 Premium in Canada, the Shanghai-built trim that brought the electric sedan down to $39,490 CAD. The automaker says it has used up its import quota for Chinese-made EVs and doesn’t expect to reopen orders until March 2027.

But the Canadian government’s own tracker tells a different story: 33,069 of the 49,000 permits for China-made EVs in the current quota year are still available.

Tesla Model 3 and Model Y can finally power your home

6 October 2026 at 17:57

Tesla has turned on Powershare Home Backup for the Model 3 and Model Y, which means its two volume cars can now send power back into a house during an outage. Until today, the Cybertruck was the only Tesla that could do it.

There are limits. You need a Powerwall 3, and Tesla only guarantees the feature on cars ordered since October 1. For years, Ford and GM have been selling EVs that can back up a home.

UK EV sales surge 36% to record high in September

2 October 2026 at 18:17

UK EV sales hit a new all-time record in September. The country registered 99,199 battery-electric cars last month, up 36.3% from a year ago and good for 28.3% of the market, according to preliminary data released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Tesla’s Model 3 was the best-selling EV and the second best-selling car overall. And yet the auto industry’s own lobby group is using the record month to argue that the UK’s EV targets are too hard.

Tesla Model 3 gets range and performance boost, plus a new 16-inch screen in US

2 October 2026 at 01:54

Tesla is now putting its larger 16-inch center touchscreen in every Model 3 sold in the US, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, a day after it rolled out the same upgrade in China.

The Model 3 Performance also gets a black headliner, 316 miles of range, and 528 hp, while the Premium AWD now does 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. But there’s still no word on the US Model 3 getting vehicle-to-load.

Tesla upgrades China Model 3 with 16-inch screen and V2L, US left out

1 October 2026 at 05:49

Update: A day after this article was published, Tesla brought the 16-inch screen to every Model 3 in the US. Here’s what changed, and what the US Model 3 still doesn’t get.

Tesla China is upgrading every Model 3 it sells with a larger 16-inch touchscreen and a new light gray interior option, and it’s turning on up to 2.2 kW of AC power export across its entire Model 3 and Model Y lineup in the country.

The US Model 3 gets none of it. Tesla’s American Model 3 still has a 15.4-inch display, and it’s shut out of the vehicle-to-load feature Tesla launched stateside in August.

NHTSA probes 1.2M Tesla Model 3, Model Y over suspension failures

31 July 2026 at 16:57

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into roughly 1.2 million Tesla vehicles after receiving 156 complaints of a front suspension component detaching while driving.

The probe covers 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2021-2023 Model Y vehicles, and it centers on the front lower lateral link separating from the car.

NHTSA denies Tesla door-release defect petition, opens new door rules

24 July 2026 at 14:16

NHTSA has denied a petition asking it to open a defect investigation into the hidden manual door releases on the Tesla Model 3. But in the same decision, the agency agreed to start writing new door-safety rules for the entire auto industry.

The denial, published today, covers 179,031 model year 2022 Model 3 vehicles. NHTSA said it found exactly one complaint matching the petition’s allegation — and it came from the same owner who filed it.

Tesla launches in Latvia and Uruguay, expanding on two continents

17 July 2026 at 14:34

Tesla opened two new markets in less than 24 hours, launching in Latvia and Uruguay in back-to-back announcements this week.

The dual entry completes Tesla’s expansion across all three Baltic states and gives the automaker its third market in South America — two very different markets that show how the company is chasing growth wherever it can find it.

Tesla’s LFP battery holds its charge better, study says

15 July 2026 at 18:01

A new analysis of nearly 10,000 real-world EV battery tests found that the same Tesla Model 3 holds up very differently depending on which battery it was built with — and the cheaper LFP version comes out on top.

The Model 3 with CATL’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack averaged 93.3% battery health among cars that had driven more than 62,000 miles, beating every nickel-based version of the car in the dataset.

Tesla moves to guarantee resale value for buyers after price cuts

14 July 2026 at 14:32

Tesla is launching a new “guaranteed future value” (GFV) program that locks in a pre-set resale price for buyers financing a new Model Y or Model 3.

The move directly targets the depreciation fears that have followed Tesla’s own aggressive price cuts over the last two years.

Tesla sued over fatal crash in Texas home that killed 76-year-old woman

24 June 2026 at 14:31

The family of a 76-year-old woman killed when a Tesla Model 3 crashed into her Katy, Texas, home has sued Tesla and the driver, alleging the company’s “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving” systems are defectively designed.

The wrongful death suit lands just days after the crash — and it leans on the same argument that produced last year’s landmark $243 million Autopilot verdict against Tesla in Florida.

Tesla admits FSD was on in fatal Texas crash, blames driver for ‘overriding’ it

23 June 2026 at 16:04

Tesla now confirms that its self-driving system was engaged when a Model 3 left a residential road in Katy, Texas, and killed a 76-year-old woman inside her home — but the company says the driver overrode it by pressing the accelerator to 100%.

Everything points to a pedal misapplication while the car was under “Full Self-Driving.” Does that mean Tesla is not at fault?

NHTSA investigating alleged Tesla Autopilot crash that killed woman in her home

22 June 2026 at 18:10

An elderly Texas woman tragically died Friday after a man who told police he was relying on his Tesla Model 3’s automated driver-assistance mode lost control and crashed his car into her family’s home.

In a statement, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Ars that Michael Butler said that “he was operating with an automated driving-assistance system engaged at the time of the crash.” Police are currently investigating whether the autopilot feature in any way caused the crash but confirmed that Butler was not intoxicated and is cooperating, partly by helping cops understand how Tesla’s Autopilot feature works.

“Butler failed to drive in a single lane, left the roadway, and struck the residence” at a “high rate of speed,” the sheriff’s office said.

4 June 2026 at 12:26

A Quebec Tesla owner has filed a class action request against Tesla over heat pump failures, seeking damages for all Tesla owners in the province after being stuck with a $4,477 repair bill when her Model 3’s heat pump died after just six years.

The lawsuit covers every Tesla model equipped with a heat pump — Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck — and alleges the automaker has been hiding a known defect from buyers.
