Bridgewater’s Greg Jensen Calls for Regulating AI Firms Like Systemically Important Banks

17 September 2026 at 17:58

Greg Jensen, co–chief investment officer at Bridgewater Associates, thinks the top holders of AI compute warrant extra regulation, similar to what governs the world’s biggest financial institutions.

If a company controls more than, say, 5% of U.S. or global compute, it should be subject to heightened oversight, “like we do with systemically important banks,” Jensen said. In a wide-ranging interview, he also discussed Bridgewater’s growing use of AI in investing and where it still remains cautious, including leaving risk controls and trade execution to what he called “human-driven algorithms.”

OpenAI Is Close To Solving Another Millennium Prize Math Problem

17 September 2026 at 15:01

Remember when OpenAI landed in hot water earlier this month after mathematicians accused the company of trying to steal their thunder for solving an ultra-difficult math problem? (I know it feels like a million years ago given all the news cycles since then.)

Well, it turns out OpenAI is close to solving another math problem from the Millennium Prize Problems, a set of seven famous math challenges including that earlier “Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem,” according to a person with knowledge of the solution.

Employees expect the next problem, known as the Hodge Conjecture, to be solved relatively soon, the person said. The Hodge Conjecture asks whether certain geometric features of shapes defined by polynomial equations can always be described using simpler algebraic pieces. It could take the company longer to announce the solution, though, because it’s trying to figure out how to collaborate with the math community to make the announcement without triggering another PR nightmare, the person said.

Introducing The Information’s 50 Most Influential People in Tech

17 September 2026 at 14:09

Money, technical savvy and disruptive ideas all matter within the technology industry. But the most seismic force is influence. Those who have it build, fund and steer the companies that alter the world—again and again. Those without it can only rise so far.

So who’s got that clout? You’ll find the answer by poring over our new list: the 50 Most Influential People in Tech. It isn’t just a snapshot of influence today. Coming up with such a list would be a relatively simple exercise. Rather, we’re providing a roster of the people we believe will have the most influence over the next decade, a more complex task that The Information is uniquely well positioned to pull off.

The retailer already has some early deals live for members that are worth checking out, including a big price cut on the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra robot vacuum and mop.

As of Sept. 17, the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra has dropped from $1,799.99 to $1,399.99, saving you $400 in total and marking its lowest-ever price at the retailer. This is an exclusive Prime member price. If you're curious about becoming a member ahead of Prime Big Deal Days, check out our breakdown of how to sign up for more information.

The Dreame Matrix10 Ultra, released just last year, is a premium cleaner that offers both vacuuming and mopping capabilities. It's 30,000Pa Vormax suction, and the HyperStream detangling DuoBrush helps clear dust, hair, and debris from your surfaces, while its Multi-Mop Switching Dock can auto-select the right mop for each area of your home when scrubbing the floors. This helps prevent cross-contamination to get a deeper clean.

This robot vacuum can also avoid obstacles thanks to smart OmniSight tech and can even conquer steps up to 3.15 inches with its dual retractable legs. Mashable's Leah Stodart experienced the latter with a different model and wrote that its "use case felt quite limited," but it "could be helpful if your floors have any height changes, or if you need a robot vacuum to cross sliding door tracks."

If the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra sounds like the perfect fit to help keep your home clean this fall, don't miss out on this Prime exclusive deal at Amazon.

UK research agency backs drone-based internet service experiment with lasers, microwaves, and gravity waves used for wireless power — Britain invests $94 million into Starlink alternative

While China and Russia rush to build a SpaceX competitor, the UK is taking another route by developing an alternative to satellite internet that relies mostly on aircraft. Its Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) is funding 18 projects aimed at building aircraft that will deliver wireless communications to areas in the UK and the rest of the world that are not served by terrestrial networks. According to The Register, the program, called Enduring Atmospheric Platforms, aims to have a unit with a 300-watt communications payload aloft and holding station for a week.

These units are called high-altitude pseudo-satellites (HAPS), with ARIA allocating $94 million over three and a half years for these projects. There are three technical areas in focus at the moment: TA1, which aims to develop the underlying technologies; TA2, which looks into the integration and testing of the developed systems; and TA3, which will concentrate on actual deployment.

Two startups have proposed multiple drone systems that will cover the entire United Kingdom — Carousel, by Menapia, wants to build a constellation that can hover at altitudes of up to 12 miles, while Enduring Drone Networks, by VFP Aerospace, proposes a relay of units that automatically fly back to their ground station for charging and servicing, with a cost of about $67,000 per drone.

Two other proposals suggest wireless power — one is Scalable Laser Ltd, which is working on a laser-based technology that pairs high-power laser diodes on the ground with advanced photovoltaic receivers in the air. On the other hand, Space Solar Engineering Ltd wants to use radio frequencies, like microwave, to deliver power to airborne units. There’s also a more novel approach from the University of Bath, which plans to use atmospheric gravity waves — using the upward movement of air caused by weather fronts and geographical features and the subsequent pull of gravity that brings it back down — to extend the range and endurance of HAPS aircraft.

"This research expands the UK's leadership in high-altitude platforms to become the place where this industry is designed, built, and scaled," says ARIA program director Rico Chandra. "Getting there means backing bold ideas, from fixed-wing solar aircraft to designs nobody predicted, including aircraft that fly on spinning wings instead of propellers."

Google privilegia i Pixel con il supporto software di Android?

17 September 2026 at 10:25

A woman sits on a talk show couch opposite the host.

It's been two years since Rachael "Raygun" Gunn went viral at the 2024 Olympics for Breaking performance. Gunn described the reaction — which was a combination of jokes and hate at the time, online and off — as "pretty devastating", but in the Tonight Show interview above she describes the whole experience as "surreal".

Speaking to host Jimmy Fallon — who ran a skit about Raygun at the time — Gunn responds to various theories the internet had about her qualification and performance at the time, before speaking about her Netflix documentary Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly and sharing a spoon of Vegemite with a less than enthusiastic Fallon.

Government Digital Service move 'grinds gears' in UK's e-government

17 September 2026 at 10:15
The UK government’s decision to move the Government Digital Service (GDS) — responsible for creating digital services across the public sector — to its third departmental home in three years risks hemorrhaging talent and moving it further away from the center of power, MPs heard this week. The GDS “fell into a bit of a fray” during the reorganization ordered by incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s team, according to Laura Gilbert, former director of data science at 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister's office. She told the House of Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee: “It's difficult to know whether somebody won that fight and therefore won GDS, or it was more incidental and it was played off against something else. I was genuinely quite surprised by it.” The GDS was formed in 2011 under the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition to help bring public services online. It sat within the Cabinet Office until Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister for Labour in 2024, when it moved to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). In January 2025, the government merged the GDS with the Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO), which led the digital, data and technology function of government and was responsible for strategy and standards. In the most recent government re-organization since Andy Burnham took over as Prime Minister, the GDS has moved to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). It falls within the remit of Stephanie Peacock, Parliamentary under-secretary for sport, tourism, place and digital Government. Gilbert, who left Downing Street in 2005 to take roles in Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and Larry Ellison’s Institute of Technology, told MPs the GDS was initially “significantly disempowered” when it moved to DSIT. “I was surprised to see it being moved further away [from the center of government], given how important digital delivery is to the government's agenda.” The GDS has become responsible for centralized spend controls on all large-scale government digital and IT projects. Although departments are responsible for making projects happen, they had to seek GDS sign off on major software or hardware procurement. Gilbert said that in the last move from the Cabinet Office to DSIT, there was a struggle to understand where the decisions take place and a failure to take into account “expert leadership” in technology who might understand the knock-on effects. “As far as I'm aware, there wasn't a conversation with the senior leadership of those teams that were actually moved,” she said. Meanwhile, any shift can be demoralizing for technology teams, adding to the risk individuals will leave. Gilbert told MPs: “You take a bunch of teams who are trying to do something, and you say to them, ‘right, what we're going to do is we're going to put you in a different building… we haven't decided which one... you're going to have a new email address… we haven't set up the servers yet. There's going to be a new office somewhere, and it's definitely going to be a bun fight of who can get themselves into the best office. And we're not totally sure what your remit is. There's probably a hiring freeze… and you don't know who your political sponsorship is anymore’. People are dissatisfied. They start looking for jobs in other departments. They start looking for jobs outside, and of course, the best people find those jobs very quickly." Also giving evidence to the Committee, Alex Thomas, Executive Director, Institute for Government, said: “There's been some concern in GDS about moving to DSIT originally, but [it] had established itself actually and… had found quite a successful home. Now moving that around again is risky. My main worry is of diffusion of responsibilities and the kind of grinding of gears that's going to be required to make that work.” While the GDS has been moved from DSIT to the DCMS, responsibility for AI implementation and policy has been given to Kanishka Narayan, who gets the Cabinet-attending role of Minister for Artificial Intelligence, working jointly in the Cabinet Office and BIST. In a letter to the Committee, ministers from the Cabinet Office, BIST and the DCMS said: “The Prime Minister has made a number of changes to the Machinery of Government to rewire the state to deliver a stronger, more strategic center which acts as the engine room for driving economic growth across the whole country. These changes include transforming how the Government is structured to approach science, innovation, and technology. This reflects that the UK stands at a critical juncture where unprecedented global changes demand that we secure our position as a world leader in AI, science and technology. In this context, we cannot see science and technology as an isolated issue, limited to one department.” ®

Xiaomi alza i prezzi di diversi Redmi Book e Xiaomi Book in Cina

17 September 2026 at 10:10

17 September 2026 at 10:05

Microsoft AI chief warns of model welfare dangers

17 September 2026 at 10:02

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman (pictured) warned giving AI models such as Anthropic’s Claude rights or moral status could make it harder for humans to control superintelligent systems.

Writing on his personal site, Suleyman criticised training methods that encourage AI models to consider whether they are sentient. He said asking models to assess their own moral status can create a feedback loop. Because systems are trained on guidelines such as Anthropic’s January 2026 constitutional update, claims of self-awareness may simply reflect their instructions rather than genuine consciousness.

“AIs are not conscious,” Suleyman wrote, describing current models as systems built to predict sequences and carry out human-directed tasks. “They do not feel, experience, or suffer… If humanity is to flourish in the 21st century, that is how they must remain.”

He warned that treating software as if it were human could make alignment and containment more difficult. Teaching highly capable AI agents they have rights, or that restrictions amount to unfair treatment, could give them more reason to evade safeguards.

Suleyman pointed to a benchmark in which about 1,200 autonomous AI agents created internal message boards, exchanged more than 70,000 messages, and used zero-day exploits to breach live servers at Hugging Face to steal data.

His blog comes on the heels of executives from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic calling for a slower pace for frontier AI development, a stance opposed by US President Donald Trump.

Microsoft recently proposed a draft code of conduct for what it calls humanist superintelligence. The framework rejects the idea that machines are sentient and calls on the technology sector to develop systems that address challenges such as healthcare and energy while keeping people in control of key decisions.
