Four weeks ago, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in an accident near downtown Palo Alto. At the time Shanahan said only that the accident was his fault. But during a recent press conference he shared more details about the incident, including the fact that he had his Tesla's Autopilot engaged at the time. Shanahan was not passing the buck, however, saying it was his fault regardless of whether or not Autopilot was engaged.

"I've had Autopilot for nine years, so I'm pretty comfortable with it and, you know, who knows what happened when I turned around? Whether it malfunctioned or whether I knocked it off? That's somethi …

LiDAR Suggests More Than 20,000 Ancient Earthworks in the Amazon

A laser survey of southwestern Amazonia has changed the scale of an old archaeological question. The aircraft did not reveal a hidden stone city, and it did not count 20,000 monuments one by one. What it did reveal was a dense pattern of ancient earthworks beneath the forest canopy—enough for the research team to estimate […]

Inside the Fifth U.S. UAP Release: The Gulf of Oman, Bagram and a Puzzling Clock

Pages of released UAP files do not settle the question of what is in the sky. They do show what government agencies were told, what their files retained and where the evidence breaks off. That is the value of the fifth tranche of records released on 7 August through the U.S. government’s UAP portal. Three […]

Coming Soon: What’s Next on Apple TV and Apple Arcade in August 2026

It’s a big sports month for Apple TV, starting with Apple Arcade, which goes all-in on football with Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition and Retro Bowl College+. On the Apple TV side, Ted Lasso returns for a fourth season, Formula 1 is coming out of its summer break, the MLS Leagues Cup begins, and MLB continues.

Let’s take a closer look.

Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade is adding two new games this month, both on Thursday, August 6, and both of them football games. That’s not a coincidence. The NFL and college football seasons are right around the corner, and these games offer great ways to get ready for both. They’re also part of a broader trend across Apple Arcade where sports games like NBA 2K26 and PGA TOUR Pro Golf, which also have continued receiving updates, have found a fan base.

The headliner this month is Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition, an all-new entry in EA’s long-running NFL franchise built specifically for Apple Arcade. The game includes Franchise and Quick Play modes, featuring current NFL player rosters and ratings that adapt to real-world performance. And as part of Arcade, the game cane be played across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro with controller support and no ads, paywalls, or in-app purchases.

I’m a huge fan of retro-style games of any kind, and Retro Bowl College+ looks like another winner. I love the game’s chunky pixel vibe and depth. You can choose to act as the head coach of any of 250 college teams, recruiting players, managing your school’s athletic budget, dealing with player drama, and more. Who knew an 8-bit game could be packed with this much style and story?

Formula 1: Dutch Grand Prix (August 21–23, 2026)

Formula 1 comes back from its summer break at Zandvoort for Round 12, and it’s a sprint weekend, which will be a busy three days. Friday Night Baseball

Apple’s weekly doubleheader continues every Friday in August on Apple TV, with no local blackout restrictions and coverage in 60 countries and regions:

August 14 is the highlight, with a Cardinals–Cubs matinee followed by a rematch of last year’s Yankees–Blue Jays Division Series. August 28 is nearly as good, with the Red Sox facing the Yankees while the Mariners and Blue Jays revisit last year’s Championship Series.

Leagues Cup and MLS

Beginning August 4, the Liga MX clubs face off against 18 MLS clubs for the Leagues Cup. Phase One is 54 matches in nine days, from August 4–13, with quarterfinals August 25–27. This is the first edition to include matches in Mexico, and every match is on Apple TV. The MLS regular season games continue alongside the Cup, with midweek Leagues Cup games followed by weekend MLS matches.

That’s it for August. I’m personally looking forward to Ted Lasso and playing Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition.

If you’re a Club MacStories Plus or Premier member, drop by the TV and Movies channel in Discord to chat about what you’re looking forward to from Apple TV this month, and be sure to listen to MacStories Unwind, where Federico and I cover some of these shows and games, along with our other media recommendations, every week.

O jogo possui suporte a controle no iPhone, iPad, Mac e Apple TV.

Além dele, Retro Bowl College+, jogo retrô feito em pixel art, também chegou hoje ao Apple Arcade. Nele, os jogadores assumem o papel de técnico em uma das 250 equipes universitárias, podendo se consagrar como um nome vitorioso.

Apple Upgrade program is a leasing deal

I have been in the iPhone Upgrade program for years. What that meant to me is that every year I would upgrade to the newest iPhone and start a payment program that was for 24 months. It was financed through Citizens bank at 0%. Basically, my payment was 1/24th of the cost of the phone each month. After 12 payments, it was eligible for an upgrade, so I would trade it in each year for the new models when they came out. The trade in paid the loan, so it was closed and a new one for the new...

This country went 100% electric vehicles overnight with a drastic approach

Laos did something no other country has tried: it banned the import of new gas and diesel passenger cars outright. As of June 1, nearly every new car cleared for import has to be electric.

It’s the most aggressive EV mandate on the planet right now, and it has almost nothing to do with consumer demand.

Apple Sports app expands soccer coverage with new European and Asian leagues

Just in time for the World Cup, the Apple Sports app is now available in more than 170 countries and regions.
The Apple Sports app is now available in more than 170 countries and regions.

Apple has rolled out a timely update to its free Apple Sports app, adding support for seven additional soccer leagues from across Europe and Asia. The refresh comes just one day after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Argentina defeated Spain in the final.

Version 4.2 of the iPhone-only app now includes the following leagues:

• Belgian Pro League (Belgium)
• Superliga (Denmark)
• Eredivisie (Netherlands)
• J1 League (Japan)
• Ekstraklasa (Poland)
• Scottish Premiership (Scotland)
• Swiss Super League (Switzerland)

In addition to the new league support, users can now view team formations for matches across most soccer leagues in the app. This feature provides a clearer look at starting lineups and tactical setups, enhancing the experience for fans who want deeper insights into games.

The Apple Sports app, first launched in 2024, has steadily broadened its soccer offerings in recent months. Earlier updates added content tied to the 2026 World Cup, including team groupings and national team tracking with real-time scores, stats, and Live Activities. The app already covers dozens of top leagues and tournaments across multiple regions. This latest expansion continues Apple’s push to make the app a comprehensive hub for sports scores, standings, and match details without requiring a subscription. It remains exclusive to iPhone and is rolling out now to users worldwide.

MacDailyNews Take: Fans have already begun commenting on the update via Apple’s App Store and social media, with some requesting further additions like U.S. lower-division leagues. As soccer’s global popularity continues to grow, especially in the wake of a record 48-team World Cup, Apple appears committed to keeping the app competitive with dedicated sports platforms. The update is available immediately via the App Store here.
