Google Nest Cam with floodlight (wired)
A Google Nest Cam attached to two bright, adjustable floodlights, this camera has free video recording, powerful lights, and on-device processing of smart alerts for people, vehicles, and animals. Thereβs no siren, but there is 24/7 recording and facial recognition. Read our review.
Even without a subscription, the camera can store the past three hours of video, and offers notifications when it detects motion from people, vehicles, or animals. You can enable continuous recording and 30 or more days of saved video with a Google Home Premium plan, starting at $10 per month. While the field of view isnβt as wide as some competitors, the Nest Cam with Floodlight shoots clear video, even in the dark thanks to its color night vision.Β
You can easily adjust the camera and floodlight behavior from the Google Home app, including settings for different timing and motion-sensing responses, and incorporate them into your smart home routines for when youβre home or away. Even if the power goes out, its backup battery will let the camera keep recording, and it has enough internal storage to log up to one hour of events.
Smart lighting manufacturer Govee is apologizing after a pair of books showing only the words βwhite supremacyβ were featured in a marketing image on its website.
The books were visible in an image (shown above) on Goveeβs US website for bedroom lighting. Disturbingly, the books sat under toy animals on a shelf just above a childβs bed. Only the booksβ spines were visible.
The Verge was the first to report on the controversy after a reader contacted the publication. The publication reported that it contacted Govee, which subsequently removed the image but didnβt respond to the site's queries before it published its initial report.
AcuRite must kill its customersβ favorite companion app due to βobsolete technology," VP of product development Jeff Bovee tells Ars Technica.
AcuRite, which makes smart weather-monitoring devices, announced this month that the My AcuRite iOS and Android app that has been around since 2016 wonβt be available after May 30. After that date, device owners must use AcuRite NOW, which AcuRite released in June 2025, to control their gadgets.
The announcement has frustrated long-time AcuRite users, largely because the new app lacks some of its predecessors' capabilities. For example, AcuRite NOW doesnβt allow renaming multiple temperature sensors, organizing on-screen sensors, or reporting temperatures as anything other than whole numbers (AcuRite says it's working on adding some of these features).
