The People v Gorilla Grodd is the only DCU TV show in active development
HBO's boss recently confirmed as much at the 2026 Emmys
His comments have got me fearing for Lanterns' future
The boss of HBO has revealed that only one DC Universe (DCU) TV show is officially in the works β and now I'm afraid for the future of Lanterns.
Speaking to Deadline, Casey Bloys confirmed that The People v Gorilla Grodd (TPvGG), aka the recently announced Superman TV spin-off, is the only TV series in active development at DC Studios.
Asked for a status update on DC's myriad television productions, Bloys replied: "People read about development, and they assume that those are greenlit shows and they're [already in] development. And everybody knows that development is just that β you're trying things, you take big swings, [and] not everything comes through.
"I would say our track record in DC, from Watchmen to Peacemaker to Penguin and now Lanterns, is pretty good. We're very selective. We're careful about what we do, nothing has changed. You'll read about development, but focus on what we're greenlighting."
Pressed on whether any other show was in active development, Bloys added: "No, not right now, obviously you've got[The People v] Gorilla Grodd, which I'm very happy about, [they're] doing something different, and I think it's a really fun idea. They just started shooting."
Why I'm fearing the worst for the fate of HBO's Green Lantern TV show
Fans have fallen in love with the abrasive Hal Jordan since Lanterns premiered in mid-August (Image credit: DC Studios/HBO Max)
For fans who've immersed themselves in the DCU since day one, Bloys' comments will be of concern.
Since then, four more series have been added to the list of potential TV candidates, but only one β The People v Gorilla Grodd β has been greenlit. Meanwhile, some shows that were named as part of Gunn's initial announcement, including Waller and Paradise Lost, have reportedly been shelved. Others, such as Booster Gold, have been trapped in development hell.
John Stewart has also won a whole new army of fans in HBO's Green Lanterns TV show (Image credit: HBO)
With Bloys outright confirming TPvGG is all that DC Studios' TV division is actively working on, it's not surprising that fans β myself included β are fearing for Lanterns' future.
The Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler-led sci-fi crime drama, which has seen its audience share seemingly grow week-on-week amid positive word of mouth, is one of the most popular shows on television right now. With three more episodes of its debut season yet to air (at the time of publication, anyway), I'm convinced that its viewership will increase in the weeks to come, too.
Considering that HBO's Green Lantern TV show has been such a hit, it's inevitable that a second season will be made, right? Not if we believe Bloys. After all, there are numerous examples of hugely successful shows β on HBO, HBO Max, and otherwise β that haven't returned for another round. There's no guarantee, then, that Lanterns season 2 will be a thing.
That said, DC Studios has assembled a writers room for Lanterns season 2 to kick around potential story ideas. That doesn't mean DC and HBO have pledged to make another season of the DCU Chapter One program, but it does offer hope that, if the right story angle can be found, another eight-part installment might be *ahem* constructed.
As I said at the start of this article, though, I am worried for Lanterns' fate. Bloys is likely playing it coy, but I'm of the opinion that he would've had something positive to say about Lanterns' future if a sophomore season was more likely to happen than not. Right now, then, I'm reluctantly confident that it'll be a one and done scenario.
If, and it's a big if, we get a big-screen Lanterns follow-up to the hit comic book-inspired show, you certainly won't hear me complaining about the decision not to make a second season.
Marvel has seemingly cast a Gen V alumnus as Angel in its new X-Men movie
Asa Germann is said to have signed on to play the winged mutant
For the most part, MCU fans have reacted positively to the news
Marvel has reportedly tapped Asa Germann to play Angel in its new X-Men movie.
The Hollywood Reporter (THR) first broke the news, with the trade publication's sources claiming that the former Gen V star has signed on to play the winged mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Interestingly, THR suggests that Germann was a major contender to portray Scott Summer/Cyclops in the forthcoming flick. However, while Marvel decided to hire Kit Connors to play Cyclops in its X-Men reboot, the comic giant's top brass were so impressed by Germann's audition, they offered him the role of Angel instead.
After appearing in The Boys spin-off Gen V, Germann has some superhuman experience under his belt (Image credit: Prime Video)
At 28 years old, Germann is on the older side of the Marvel Phase 7 movie's cast, with many of his fellow stars in the 20 to 25 bracket. Nonetheless, Germann fits the bill as an actor under the age of 30 who, as long as he's signed a multi-picture deal, could feature in numerous X-Men and MCU movies over the next decade.
Real name Warren Worthington III, Angel is a founding member of the X-Men in Marvel Comics. As his mutant alias implies, he's defined by a pair of giant, white feathered wings that protrude from his upper back. Unsurprisingly, these allow him to fly, but Angel also boasts the usual superhuman abilities β super-strength, reflexes, stamina, and durability β that keep him in the fight for longer than ordinary people.
Germann won't be the first actor to embody Angel on the big screen. Indeed, Ben Foster portrayed the Marvel character in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, while Ben Hardy played the same individual 10 years later in 2016 movie X-Men: Apocalypse. For more on those films and other mutant-led flicks, find out how to watch the X-Men movies in order.
What have Marvel fans said about Asa Germann's casting as Angel in the MCU's first X-Men film?
In the main, MCU fans have lauded Germann's casting. Indeed, threads on r/MarvelStudios, r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers, and the ResetEra forums are filled with comments from people excited to see what Germann will bring to the table as part of his portrayal.
While the vast majority are pleased with this hiring β shout out to long-time MCU casting director Sarah Halley Finn for yet another great pick, by the way β a couple of fans are giving themselves a well-earned pat on the back for previously suggesting that Germann would be their top choice for Angel. Not exactly the proven leaks we're used to, but I'll allow it.
DC fans have received their first look at The People v Gorilla Grodd
Multiple images and videos of the Superman spin-off have appeared online
They show The Flash villain attending university and as part of an A Cappella group
The first images and videos for The People v Gorilla Grodd (TPvGG) have appeared online β and they've sparked something of a fierce fan debate over the titular, hyperintelligent ape.
Billed as a mockumentary show, the forthcoming Superman spin-off will see Daily Planet reporter Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) re-examine a case against Grodd (voiced by Jimmy Tatro) to determine whether the latter was wrongly convicted of his father's murder. And, based on the set leaks we've seen thus far, it seems some fans are already convinced that Grodd is innocent.
Their evidence? The numerous behind-the-scenes pictures and footage of the HBO Max TV series shared online yesterday (September 9) that indicate Grodd is nothing more than a popular, intellectual, and fun-loving ladies' man.

But wait, there's more. In images uploaded to the same social media platform, Grodd is also seen graduating from university. A separate shot shows the DC comic book character is pictured wearing a shirt, waist jacket, and trousers (see below), too. It's unclear if this is Grodd wearing his college uniform or if he's dressed smartly for his murder trial.
EXCLUSIVE: First Look at Gorilla Grodd in The People Vs Gorilla Grodd pic.twitter.com/EX2fGv7ANnSeptember 9, 2026
Regardless, it appears that most DC Universe (DCU) fans are happy with what they've seen of Grodd. Various threads on r/DC_Cinematic, r/DCULeaks, and the ResetEra forums are full of comments from people saying they're coming around to the prospect that The People v Gorilla Grodd will actually be good. In fact, some even want the Grodd stand-in to be kept for the final product, rather than see him replaced by a CGI version.
That said, there are those who aren't enamored with how the supervillain looks. Others don't like that he isn't being used in a movie starring his archnemesis in Barry Allen/The Flash, and/or that he's being disrespectfully reduced to a caricature of his comic book counterpart. We'll see how the DCU's portrayal shakes out when TPvGG is finally ready to go.
The first trailer for Neon's Sam Altman biopic Artificial has been revealed
The Andrew Garfield-led movie will be released in late 2026/early 2027
It covers Altman's controversial rise to prominence as OpenAI's co-founder
The first trailer for Artificial, a movie about controversial OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, has been revealed.
Unveiled yesterday (September 8), the teaser for the Neon-distributed film strikes an unusually sinister tone for what's being billed as a biographical comedy-drama.
Indeed, from the gun-laden room that lead star Andrew Garfield, who'll portray Altman, visits, to Garfield's unsettling voiceover that plays over Artificial's publicly-released footage, it's certainly foreboding in nature. I get the feeling, then, that it'll be a dark-comedy dramatization of Altman's rise of prominence, the launch of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, and his brief and somewhat disputable ousting as OpenAI CEO in late 2023.
Artificial will initially debut in US theaters on December 25, 2026, before receiving a wider international rollout in early 2027. UK viewers, for example, will have to wait until January 22, 2027 to catch one of many new movies that'll arrive in the months ahead.
Artificial cast and crew: who's involved?
Garfield (left) will be joined by a whole host of famous faces in Artificial (Image credit: Neon)
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Call Me By Your Name) is on directing duties, while Saturday Night Live writing alumnus Simon Rich has penned its screenplay. Meanwhile, Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has also created original music and songs for Artificial.
Where the movie's cast is concerned, Garfield, who impersonates another Silicon Valley techbro following his portrayal of Eduardo Savarin in The Social Network, aka the 2010 dramatization about Facebook's creation, is arguably its most recognizable star β and based on what little footage we've seen thus far, he appears to have Altman's mannerisms, vernacular, and other unique traits down to a tee.
Here's who else you'll see in Artificial:
Yura Borisov (Anora) as Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's chief scientific officer and co-founder
Monica Barbaro (Crime 101) as Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer
Cooper Hoffman (The Long Walk) as Greg Brockman, OpenAI's chairman
Ike Barinholtz (The Studio) as Elon Musk
Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) as Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called 'Godfather of AI'
Jason Schwartzman (The Grand Budapest Hotel) as TBC
Chris O'Dowd (The IT Crowd) as TBC
What is the plot of Artificial?
Artificial will seemingly focus on a specific period of OpenAI's history (Image credit: Neon)
Here's the official logline for Artifical: "[The movie] chronicles the incredibly consequential days leading up to the sudden firing and reinstatement of Sam Altman, as the fate of who gets to control the technology at the centre of an AI arms race hangs in the balance."
It's unclear how much of Altman's backstory, his various relationships with his OpenAI colleagues, and ChatGPT's launch and subsequent sociopolitical impact will be covered as part of Artificial's story. One thing is for sure, though: given that it dramatizes events concerning Altman and OpenAI, the discourse that will surround Artificial's release will be impossible to ignore.
- Announced in November 2025 - It will be the show's final season - Expected to premiere in 2028 - Filming could begin in early 2027 - No trailer or other footage available yet - Many of the show's cast will return - Some actors won't reprise their roles - Plot will pick up after the season 3 finale - Other story details teased in its source material - No plans for a surprise fifth season
House of the Dragon season 4 has plenty riding on it. With the high-fantasy show's next chapter set to be its final installment, it'll have to deliver a fittingly fiery conclusion to the Targaryen Civil War, and wrap numerous other subplots and character arcs before its final credits sequence rolls.
All of that, and the final season's 2028 launch, feel a long way off at this stage β but that doesn't mean we can't look forward to its eventual release. So, if you want to know more about its possible cast, expected storylines, and more besides, this guide to the Game of Thrones prequel's next chapter is geared towards you.
Hop on, dragonrider, and let's take flight together.
House of the Dragon season 4 release date: what we know
Daemon will return in House of the Dragon's final season (Image credit: HBO Max)
HBO hasn't revealed next season's official launch date yet. However, as part of a multi-show renewal announcement that confirmed House of the Dragon season 4 was in development, the US TV network's boss Casey Bloys said it would premiere sometime in 2028.
Of course, plans can change, but word is that the cameras will start rolling in early 2027. Should that be the case, I'll be more confident that House of the Dragon season 4 will make its HBO Max debut in 2028.
House of the Dragon season 4 trailer: is there one?
Any idea when we'll see next season's first trailer, Alicent? (Image credit: HBO)
Unsurprisingly, no β and we won't see one for a long time yet. Once a trailer for House of the Dragon season 4 is unveiled, I'll update this section.
House of the Dragon season 4 likely cast
We'll see Aegon II and Aemond again next season (Image credit: Ollie Upton/HBO)
Full spoilers follow for House of the Dragon season 3, and Fire and Blood, aka the book the show is based on.
Here's who I expect to see in House of the Dragon season 4:
Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen
Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower
Matt Damon as Daemon Targaryen
Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon
Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II Targaryen
Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen
Bethany Antonio as Baela Targaryen
Phoebe Campbell as Rhaena Targaryen
Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull
Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull
Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria
Kieran Bew as Hugh Hammer
Tom Bennett as Ulf the White
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Daeron Targaryen
Freddie Fox as Gwayne Hightower
Jefferson Hall as Tyland Lannister
Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers
Joplin Sibtain as Jon Roxton
Kyrt Egyiawan as Orwyle
Archie Barnes as Oscar Tully
Annie Shapero as Alysanne Blackwood
Dan Fogler as Torrhen Manderly
Amanda Collin as Jeyne Arryn
Three big names were taken off the proverbial chess board in last season's finale, meaning they won't return for chapter 4.
James Norton's Ormund Hightower and Tommy Flanagan's Roderick Dustin were both gravely injured as part of their Tumbleton duel. The pair were then burned alive by Ulf and his dragon Silverwing in the final throes of said conflict.
Meanwhile, Phia Saban's Helaena committed suicide by throwing herself from a window in Maegar's Holdfast as a way out of being Rhaenyra's perennial prisoner. This trio, then, won't be back for another round.
So long, Helaena (Image credit: HBO Max)
There are bound to be a few returning faces, including Jamie Kenna's Ser Alfred Broome, while individuals like Ser Marston Waters and an unhinged, so-called prophet known simply as The Shepherd, who are yet to appear in House of the Dragon, might also show up.
In Fire and Blood, Broome and Waters play integral roles in the Fall of Dragonstone and/or other late-game events. Meanwhile, The Shepherd is responsible for instigating the Storming of the Dragonpit, a hugely significant event that was teased as part of Helaena's dream sequence in season 3 episode 7. I have a wild theory about the identity of The Shepherd, though, which you can read more about in my season 3 ending explained article in this guide's plot section.
That all said, House of the Dragon has taken some creative liberties with its source material, so there's no guarantee that this triumvirate will be part of proceedings. Hopefully, it won't be too long until HBO confirms season 4's full cast roster, and we can say with certainty that they, plus other returnees and newcomers, will take part.
House of the Dragon season 4 story speculation
Rhaenyra has fully committed to her tyrant queen persona (Image credit: HBO Max)
Full spoilers follow for House of the Dragon season 3. Fire and Blood spoilers are also discussed.
Season 4's story synopsis hasn't been revealed yet, but we've got a good idea of what'll happen next
My House of the Dragon season 3 ending explained piece contains some clues about where things will go from here. Meanwhile, those who've read Fire and Blood will definitely know what's in store for Rhaenyra, Aegon II, and everyone else moving forward.
I'm about to dig into some aspects of the latter, so this is your one and only warning: potentially big spoilers immediately follow for House of the Dragon season 4. Skip to the next section if you don't want any major story beats ruined ahead of time.
What'll become of Corlys Velaryon next season? (Image credit: Theo Whiteman/HBO)
Still here? You'll already know β or want to know β that there are many more deadly events yet to be played out in the Dance of the Dragons.
Indeed, the Fall of Dragonstone and Storming of the Dragonpit notwithstanding, we should also see live-action depictions of the Battle Above the Gods Eye, the Second Battle of Tumbleton, and the final showdown between Rhaenyra and Aegon II.
Other moments, such as the Moon of the Three Kings, Battle of the Kingsroad, the False Dawn, and Hour of the Wolf could also be adapted. However, House of the Dragon season 4 already has plenty of destructive and life-threatening ground to cover, so I'd be surprised if the latter pair are shown in any great capacity, if at all.
There could be further ructions in the Velaryon household in season 4 (Image credit: HBO)
That said, the series could end on an unexpected note. Asked by Business Insider about how he planned on concluding things, Condal replied: "We've talked about this being kind of a World War II movie: There are plenty of World War II movies that exist where you tell the story within this greater war, but the curtain drops at some point in the story, and it's not necessarily with Japan's surrender or Hitler dying in the bunker β these big kind of endpoints where you could say World War II truly ended. You're telling the story within the story.
"So, in no way to comment at all on how we're planning on ending this, but I think that was the trick," he continued. "Because Fire & Blood is a decades-spanning history, the question is really more 'Where do you drop the curtain on this particular story?. We're telling the story of the Dance of the Dragons... at what point do you drop the curtain on this, [in a way] that feels satisfying and like you've told a complete story, but also that leaves certain things open-ended? [By] telling the audience, intentionally, that history marches on."
Ulf White and Hugh Hammer might no longer be affiliated with the Targaryens or Hightowers (Image credit: HBO)
Before things come to an end, there are many subplots and character arcs to tie up. Those include β but aren't limited to β Rhaenyra potentially losing more allies in Baela, Addam, and Corlys; Aegon and Aemond teaming up to tackle Daeron and Rhaenyra; Alyn having to deal with taking the life of the High Septon under Rhaenyra's orders; and Hugh reckoning with Cat's death, and how that'll impact his loyalty to Rhaenyra.
Furthermore, there will be Alicent learning of Helaena's death and Aegon II's return, Mysaria's possible role in instigating a rebellion against Rhanyera, and Ulf being a dragon-wielding wildcard whose no longer loyal to Team Black or Team Green β and that's just dealing with some of the show's expansive ensemble.
Of course, the biggest question of all is: will House of the Dragon be able to give closure to everyone in the eight, 60-minute-long episodes that remain before its final curtain call? That remains to be seen. But, with other popular shows recently failing to stick the landing from a finale standpoint, Condal and company will hope House of the Dragon doesn't become the latest one to under-deliver for its fanbase.
Will there be a fifth season of House of the Dragon?
Who else pulled this face when they realized there won't be a fifth season? (Image credit: HBO Max)
Right now, no. Speaking to Deadline in January, HBO boss Casey Bloys replied "yes, that is the idea" when asked if the show will end with season 4. In a separate chat with Deadline this June, showrunner Ryan Condal also said "I think I have said what I have to say about Westeros" β the implication being that, once House of the Dragon's fourth season has ended, it won't return for another outing.
There's always the prospect of HBO replacing Condal with someone else if it felt that a fifth season was necessary, but it would be bizarre to see another individual helm a single season of it. It would be even weirder if House of the Dragon's story continued after season 4, because the show was only intended to cover the Targaryen Civil War as it's outlined in Fire and Blood.
There's plenty more ground to cover with House Targaryen and Westeros more generally post-The Dance of the Dragons. Those stories are arguably best told in separate Thrones spin-offs, though, rather than being the foundations on which to build a fifth season. In short: don't expect to see House of the Dragon season 5 once the show reaches what's expected to be its natural end with its fourth and final installment.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has spun its way into theaters β and there's something about the Marvel movie's end credits scene that's dominated my thoughts since I left my screening.
I've already written about the post-credits stinger in my Spider-Man: Brand New Day ending explained piece, but I didn't elaborate on what it could be teasing. That's because, based on a new theory I have about this Spider-Man film's end credits scene, I deemed that discussion worthy of its own article.
It goes without saying, but full spoilers immediately follow for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If you haven't seen it yet: bookmark this page, read my Spider-Man: Brand New Day review to see if it's any good, and then watch it at your local theater. Once you've completed those steps, re-open this page β it'll be worth the wait, I promise.
Alright, let's first review what happens in Spider-Man 4's post-credits scene, which centers on the Spidey Tracker app developed by Ned Leeds.
Initially, a flashing marker, accompanied by an automated voice message that says "New Spider-Man sighting", indicates that the titular hero is still in New York City. However, the message soon starts saying "Location unknown", which highlights that Spider-Man's actual whereabouts are, well, unknown. Cue the app zooming out to try to find Peter Parker.
Eventually, the app zooms out far enough that it not only shows us the entire Earth, but also that the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character can't be found. That's until the app moves away from our world, lays down a new pin that indicates Spider-Man is somewhere in space, and ends with the voice message saying "Location found."
Where'd you go, Peter? (Image credit: Sony Pictures/Marvel Entertainment)
What does that mean? The obvious answer is that Spidey is no longer planet-side. I know, shock, horror. What isn't clear, though, is why he's in space. Again, there's an easy answer for this: it's got something to do with Avengers: Doomsday and/or its sequel Avengers: Secret Wars.
That pair, which come out on December 18, 2026 and December 17, 2027, mark the end of Marvel Phase 6 and the divisive Marvel Multiverse Saga. And, while current Spidey star Tom Holland isn't confirmed to appear in Doomsday, the fan-favorite A-lister will, by virtue of his popularity, feature in one or both of the aforementioned films. So, it would make a ton of sense if Brand New Day's end credits stinger is teasing his involvement in Doomsday and/or Secret Wars.
Nonetheless, what if β and I realize this is a huge if β the Spidey Tracker isn't picking up Holland's Spider-Man, but one of his fellow webheads?
All three live-action iterations of Spider-Man joined forces in 2021 MCU movie Spider-Man: No Way Home (Image credit: Sony Pictures/Marvel Entertainment)
Now, I know that's a stretch, but hear me out. After all, everything we learn about the Spidey Tracker in Brand New Day suggests it's tailored specifically to the MCU's Spider-Man, so why would it detect another wallcrawler, such as Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield's, instead?
Well, for one, we don't actually know that the Spidey Tracker has been custom-built for Holland's version. If it hasn't, there's no reason why it wouldn't detect one of his multiversal variants.
That multiversal aspect is perhaps the most crucial part of my theory, too.
The next two Avengers movies will be the culmination β and celebration β of every Marvel Universe we've seen on the big screen. That includes the MCU, the original Fox X-Men franchise, and β based on myriad rumors that have been circulating online for months β the realities inhabited by Maguire and Garfield.
It would be a huge opportunity missed if we don't see Andrew Garfield again before the Multiverse Saga ends (Image credit: Sony Pictures)
Furthermore, Avengers: Doomsday's story synopsis has already confirmed that it'll revolve around the threat posed by Incursions.
These multiversal calamities occur when the barriers between two universes break down, and lead to a collision that permanently destroys one or both worlds. As such, Doomsday will feature heroes from three distinct universes β the MCU, original FoX-Men, and The Fantastic Four β battling to save their realities.
But are these the only universes we'll visit in Avengers 5? It would be a glaring error if Marvel overlooked Maguire and Garfield's worlds in Doomsday and/or Secret Wars, and I don't think anyone believes that the comic giant would.
It's for that very reason, then, that I believe Brand New Day's post-credits scene isn't actually showing us that Holland's Parker has gone off-world. No, I'm convinced that the Spidey Tracker is actually picking up Maguire or Garfield's Spider-Man β and, of the two, it's the former that it's detected.
Think about it. Doomsday's first proper trailer appears to suggest that the FoX-Men have successfully navigated an Incursion. I speculate more on this in my Avengers: Doomsday trailer breakdown article, but essentially, the teaser's first few seconds show Charles Xavier/Professor X shielding his eyes from a humungous, blinding explosion. Of course, this might not be the final moments of the FoX-Men destroying another world to save their own, but what else could cause such a massive and bright blast if not the destruction of an entire universe?
And what's that got to do with Maguire's Spider-Man? Well, maybe it's his reality β aka the Sam Raimi Spider-Verse β that's being annihilated in that scene. If so, it's possible that a giant mega-Incursion involving the MCU, Fantastic Four-Verse, FoX-Men universe, and Raimi-Verse happens at the same time in Doomsday, which results in the FoX-Men proactively destroying the Raimi-Verse because their reality is most at risk of colliding with it.
Should that be the case, it would explain why the Spidey Tracker detects Maguire's Peter Parker instead of Holland's and subsequently backs up my admittedly wild theory.
I wouldn't be shocked if Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker shows up in Avengers: Doomsday
There's the tiniest shred of evidence that I might be onto something, too. During a cute chat with kids on the Celebrity Surprise YouTube channel, Holland was asked if Maguire would appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Holland's reply? "He's not in the movie [Spider-Man 4], but... yeah, I... yeah, careful now."
The implication here is that Holland knows something about when and where Maguire's version of the character could show up next. Holland is famous for having loose lips when it comes to MCU spoilers, too, so the fact that he stops himself here before he reveals something is, in itself, revealing.
Does he know that Maguire will feature in Doomsday and/or Secret Wars? I wouldn't be shocked if he does. After all, Holland, Maguire, and Garfield all shared the screen in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. If they still keep in touch, it's plausible they've discussed their possible involvement in one or both forthcoming Avengers films, with Maguire potentially telling them β in the strictest confidence β that he's in Avengers: Doomsday. For the sake of my offbeat theory, I hope that's the case.
Huzzah, another weekend is upon us β and, amid the lack of new movies landing in theaters today (July 24), you might be inclined to stay at home and check one of the following seven must-see films and TV shows instead.
There are a couple of new releases we couldn't squeeze into this week's streaming round-up β sorry, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 and The Dink. Nevertheless, I'm sure you'll find something to your liking from those we've listed below. So, take a look, load up one of the best streaming services, and sit back and enjoy one or more of them. β Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe (HBO Max)
And what if I said that The Big Bang Theory spinoffStuart Fails to Save the Universe was better than the original series? Nobody was expecting awkward comic book store owner Stuart's story to continue from the main show, but in hindsight, it's a glorious move.
Our titular heroic lead, on-off girlfriend Denise, and friends Kripke and Bert are brought back together when Stuart triggers a multiverse armageddon by accidentally breaking a device built by Sheldon and Leonard.
Has 'King of Sitcoms' Chuck Lorre done it again? You'll need to read my Stuart Fails to Save the Universe review to find out if it's th TV triumph that I never expected. β Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter
It's been 13 years since the gang defeated Lord Ozai and the Fire Nation, and attentions have turned to a new airbender called Tagah. Together, Aang and Tagah embark on a global quest to find the relic before a group called The Denied.
Aang is all grown up in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, but that doesn't mean the original magic has gone anywhere. The movie's understanding of perspective, movement, and detail is absolutely astonishing, moving through the Four Nations with such awe-inspired wonder that you'll want to live in each frame.
Time may have changed how they look, but their goofy and fun-loving personalities definitely haven't... and the animation captures exactly what has been missing from Netflix's live-action adaptation. β JV
In this new Netflix movie, Kevin Hart stars as a 40-year-old who ends up at a three-day bachelor party with strangers, resulting in yet another silly Hart-led venture that's perfect if you need of a laugh this weekend.
How did he end up there, you might ask? Well, he was mistakenly added to a group chat and went along for the ride, traveling from New York to Miami to join in the celebrations. Any excuse to party by the beach, I suppose.
It's not so idyllic though, as the trailer teases trouble with the law and other mishaps, including getting horribly stung by a jellyfish. Rather him than me. β Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer
Flawless victory! Mortal Kombat II is now available to stream on HBO Max, so you can relive the action-packed video game adaptation whenever you'd like.
As far as weekend watches go, you really can't beat an over-the-top, violent thrill ride like this one. If you're a fan of The Boys, Karl Urban's portrayal of Johnny Cage has been widely praised, with some noting it's worth watching just for him. β LB
Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston (Hulu/Disney+)
Think you know the complete story of Pompeii? Hold that thought, because Marvel star Tom Hiddleston sheds new light on this cataclysmic event in one of the more poignant docudramas I've seen in a while.
A three-part National Geographic series, Pompeii: Out of Time follows Hiddleston as he retraces the steps of a trio of individuals caught up in the natural disaster. Armed with fresh archaeological evidence and backed up by a team of experts, Hiddleston explores how these people not only navigated one of the worst humanitarian crises of the ancient world, but who might also have even survived the deadly events of 79 A.D.
Part educational, part moving drama, Pompeii: Out of Time is out now in full on Disney+ and Hulu. β TP
I don't need all of my television to be profound, life-changing, or even that meaningful. Sometimes, I just want to switch my brain off and pretend I live in a picturesque, rural town like Ransom Canyon on the other side of the world where everyone has unrelenting drama except me.
In season 2, the land feud between the Double K and Fuller ranches has become more ferocious, local bar owner Quinn has left for New York despite her on-off relationship with rancher Staten, and mysterious newcomer Yancy has revealed to new love interest Ellie that he has a secret wife.
Season 1 was already a strong outing, but now that the show knows itself a little more, season 2 is easily on par with the strongest seasons ofVirgin River, the streamer's most iconic "cozy drama" IP. β JV
One of numerous mid-2026 film releases that have bombed at the box office, Amazon has hoisted the proverbial white flag on its live-action Masters of the Universe movie's theatrical run. In short: that means you can now watch it on Prime Video.
Based on the Mattel-owned media franchise of the same name, the action fantasy flick tells the tale of Adam, the crown prince of Eternia and owner of an mystical weapon called the Power Sword that, when wielded, turns him into the superhuman known as He-Man. Together with his allies, the previously exiled Adam must realize his potential and overthrow the nefarious Skeletor, who seized control of Adam's home city of Eternos β and its throne β 15 years earlier.

- In development at Marvel Studios - Expected to be MCU 2.0's first film - Release date yet to be announced - Could come out some time in 2028 - No trailer or wider footage available - Plenty of cast rumors circulating online - Story synopsis yet to be publicly unveiled - Nothing to report on possible sequels
The mutants are coming. Indeed, with Marvel hard at work on developing another X-Men movie β one that will officially introduce a new version of the superteam to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) β it won't be long before they return to the big screen. Well, providing you don't consider its potential 2028 launch to be a lengthy wait...
But I digress. With San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2026 almost upon us, and speculation that some sort of X-Men announcement will be made at the fan expo, interest over the next live-action X-Men film couldn't be higher. Read on to discover everything we know so far about the movie that's likely to usher in version 2.0 of the MCU.
X-Men movie release date: what we know
Kevin Feige confirms that Jake Schreier's 'X-MEN' movie comes out after 'AVENGERS: SECRET WARS'"I can't wait for all of you to see 'Avengers: Doomsday', we have a movie after that called 'Avengers: Secret Wars', and after that the mutants are coming and the X-Men are coming and⦠pic.twitter.com/pw9u54BEEBJuly 11, 2026
Marvel is yet to confirm a release date for its X-Men movie. It's still in the early stages of development, after all, so unless a surprise announcement comes at SDCC 2026, it will be some time before we know more.
More recently, Feige hinted (see the X/Twitter post above) that the new X-Men movie will be the first film to arrive after the sixth Avengers installment. With that movie due out in December 2027, we shouldn't expect MCU's first mutant-led project until some time in 2028.
Marvel's X-Men movie trailer: is there one?

Unsurprisingly, no. In fact, assuming Marvel returns to Hall H panel at SDCC 2028, I'd be amazed if we get any official footage before then.
Once a teaser is released, I'll update this section β but you'll be waiting a long time for one!
Marvel's X-Men cast rumors

Possible spoilers follow for Marvel's X-Men movie.
Predictably, nobody has been confirmed to appear in Marvel's X-Men movie yet. However, plenty of rumors have surfaced β and continue to circulate β about who's involved, so let's take a look at some of the biggest ones.
And yet, the vast majority of actors who have been linked with roles in Marvel's mutant-led flick are what I'd consider to be household names.
One such star is Stranger Things alumnus Sadie Sink. After being cast as a mystery character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the long-running rumor is that Sink will play Jean Grey. If that's true β and there's now plenty of evidence to suggest it is β we'll almost certainly see her in this film.

Who else could pop up? Last May, the rumour mill was buzzing with reports about other potential X-Men cast members, including speculation that Bryan Cranston would play Charles Xavier/Professor X, Cynthia Erivo would portray Ororo Munroe/Storm, and recent retiree Daniel Day-Lewis had held talks to take on the role of Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto.
Lastly, Lee Sung Jin, one of this film's co-writers, told Collider that he's a huge fan of Remy LeBeau/Gambit. Don't be surprised, then, if we see a new iteration of the Ragin' Cajun as part of this movie's ensemble.
Marvel's X-Men movie plot rumors
Marvel's new X-Men film will be wildly different to what's come before, according to its creative team (Image credit: 20th Century Fox)
You already know what I'm going to say here, don't you? Surprise, surprise, Marvel's X-Men reboot doesn't have a story synopsis yet.
Thanks to Schreier and Jin, though, we've been given a glimpse into their creative process for the film, including the key inspiration behind the story they want to tell.
Schreier (via Collider) and Jin (via Men's Health) admitted that the literature penned by legendary scribe Chris Claremont, who's best known for working on the Uncanny X-Men comic book series for 16 years between 1975 and 1991, will be a major influence on their X-Men reboot. Jin also revealed (via The Watch podcast) that beloved Saturday morning cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series is also informing the narrative structure by way of its character-first and soap opera-esque elements.
Chatting to Deadline, Jin also explained that Feige wants him, co-writer Joanna Calo, and Schreier to " take a big swing and start anew, [and] not be beholden to any of the movies that have come before".
Expect an entirely new take β in a live-action sense, anyway β of the iconic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby-created supergroup when their next movie lands in theaters.

What does the future hold for the X-Men in the MCU?

In short: we have no idea. Marvel still has to get this movie off the ground, and as Schreier explained during an interview with Collider, it needs to be a major success if the franchise is to continue into Marvel Phase 7 and beyond.
If it succeeds, the X-Men could become one of the cornerstones of the MCU's next era. But if it doesn't? Frankly, that's a scenario that doesn't bear thinking about. The X-Men are one of the most popular superhero teams of all time, so if they can't help support Marvel's cinematic juggernaut in a post-Multiverse Saga world, who can?
