Cursor Staff Investigated Whether Confidential Data Reached SpaceX for AI Training

In the weeks before SpaceX’s AI unit in August introduced Grok Bot, its version of a personal AI agent, engineers at Cursor discovered a potential problem.

Cursor, the AI coding startup SpaceX was then in the process of acquiring, was developing Grok Bot, and as part of that process, employees across Cursor were using the tool extensively for testing and as a part of their everyday work. In late July, engineers raised concerns that Cursor might have sent data from that internal testingβ€”potentially including confidential information about its customers, suppliers and business partnersβ€”to SpaceX’s AI unit. One of Cursor’s lawyers warned that if word got out that the company was using the data for training, that could cause a β€œhuge trust problem,” according to internal communications viewed by The Information.

Elon Musk once again teased the potential of a merger between Tesla and SpaceX on Monday, saying it was a β€œgreat question” why Tesla and SpaceX were separate companies.

SpaceX Overhauls Data Center Build-Out, Potentially Slowing Expansion

Elon Musk is famous for his β€œmove fast” management philosophy, which he demonstrated most starkly when he built new data centers for his AI startup in record time two years ago. But a new team of rocket engineers Musk recently installed to run his data centers is taking a very different approach.

SpaceX is changing how it builds the giant facilities that house AI servers in a way that might slow the building of new campuses, according to people familiar with the situation. The new management team is looking to install more backup systems for power and cooling, and to more thoroughly test those systems before the data centers start operating, instead of adding them later on, as the AI company was doing, two of the people said. SpaceX also wants to reduce the use of temporary power and cooling systems in its data centers, one person said.

Cursor Maps Out Branding, Other Changes as SpaceX Acquisition Nears

Cursor told staff at an all-hands meeting on Thursday that SpaceX could complete its $60 billion acquisition of the coding startup as soon as the end of next week, and flagged that the Cursor brand name will likely be phased out for new products in the coming months, people familiar with the matter said.

For instance, Cursor’s upcoming general-purpose agent, internally code-named β€œSand”, could be branded as Grok Bot, the people said. Cursor doesn’t have plans to immediately change the name of its existing tools, including its popular Cursor coding assistant, one person said. The exact timing of the deal closing depends on securing regulatory approvals, though it is expected to close by the end of the month at the latest, they said.
