Report: Windows users face six times more malware than Mac users

11 August 2026 at 14:14

New data from Surfshark Antivirus shows a striking gap in how malware targets Windows versus macOS users: Windows devices see nearly six times as many detections per user as macOS devices.

However, Gabrielė Sinkevičiūtė, Surfshark’s Head of Product, is saying that the sentiment often echoed on the internet that “Macs are safer” is not entirely accurate.

“Mac users still operate under the assumption that their device is inherently safer, which can make them way more susceptible to social engineering tactics like phishing rather than traditional malware,” he says.

Here are highlights from the Surfshark study:

  • Windows users made up 66% of Surfshark Antivirus’ active user base but accounted for 92% of all malware detections;
  • macOS users made up 34% of the user base but just 8% of detections — meaning Windows users encountered nearly 6x more threats per user;
  • Trojans were the top threat on Windows (46% of detections) vs. 25% on macOS;
  • Phishing hit macOS far harder, ranking 3rd on that platform (15% of detections) vs. just 3% and 6th place on Windows;
  • Riskware accounted for 19% of Windows detections and 17% on macOS;
  • Adware: 4% on Windows, 3% on macOS.

Apple is facing a class action lawsuit for “fraud” over its iCloud Private Relay glitch

11 August 2026 at 12:09

Another day, another lawsuit. Apple is facing a class action lawsuit for “fraud” over its iCloud Private Relay glitch, reports 9to5Mac.

macOS has security measures to prevent malware getting installed on Macs, but last month it was reported that researchers say they have found a way around this.

Researchers Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk said in a blog post that they reported their findings, but Apple is unconcerned. Apple has good reason, but it is still a potential weakness that the researchers believe could and should be fixed.

“A vulnerability in macOS allows an attacker to silently replace the main executable of any application downloaded from the web without requiring elevated privileges,” Bakry and Myst said. “As a result, trusted applications can be made to execute attacker-controlled code without triggering security warnings when relaunched.”

The class action lawsuit accusing Apple of false advertising, misrepresentation, and fraud has now been filed by Clarkson Law Firm, the same lawyers who previously obtained a $250M settlement over the delayed launch of Siri AI, notes 9to5Mac.

Eagle Freedom Alliance Recognizes Apple for Advancing Responsible Mineral Sourcing in East Africa

11 August 2026 at 12:09

Eagle Freedom Alliance, an investor-led coalition advancing corporate accountability through the public markets, has released a shareholder letter recognizing Apple Inc. for “its leadership in advancing responsible mineral sourcing and greater supply chain transparency in East Africa.”

Signed by investors and advisors connected to Apple shareholdings, the letter recognizes Apple’s support for responsible mineral sourcing and highlights Power Resources International as an example of an emerging traceable tantalum supply chain in East Africa. The letter also recognizes Apple’s leadership within the Responsible Minerals Initiative and its broader commitment to responsible sourcing.

“Responsible supply chains do not become industry standards simply because a better model exists,” said Wes Lyons, founder of Eagle Freedom Alliance and general partner at Eagle Venture Fund. “They become standards when market leaders choose to reward transparency, traceability and human dignity. Apple demonstrated how responsible procurement can strengthen supply-chain resilience and long-term shareholder value at the same time.”

Tantalum is a critical mineral used in smartphones, medical devices, aerospace systems, and other advanced technologies. “Supply chains throughout the African Great Lakes region have long faced concerns involving forced labor, conflict financing, and limited traceability,” said Samuel Logan, Founder of Evidencity. Project Tantalus, a research initiative by Eagle Freedom Alliance and Evidencity, has further illustrated how these risks can extend throughout global supply chains, reinforcing the need for transparent, traceable sourcing models that reduce the risk of exploitation.

The shareholder letter highlights the role that market leadership can play in creating commercial demand for responsibly sourced minerals and identifies Apple as an example of how purchasing decisions can encourage greater transparency and accountability throughout global supply chains.

Apple is a member of the Responsible Minerals Initiative, a cross-industry organization that provides standards, assessment processes and reporting tools to support informed mineral-sourcing decisions.

The shareholder letter expresses support for Apple’s continued investment in responsible sourcing and encourages the company to advance scalable solutions that protect workers, strengthen material security and improve accountability across its global supply chain.

“Every purchasing decision sends a market signal,” Lyons said. “Apple demonstrated how a buyer of consequence can help turn a responsible alternative into a model others can follow. That is precisely the kind of measurable corporate leadership Eagle Freedom Alliance exists to elevate.”

This recognition continues Eagle Freedom Alliance’s broader corporate recognition effort, which uses the voice of investors to acknowledge companies taking measurable action to reduce human trafficking, exploitation and related human rights risks. By elevating proven models and constructive corporate leadership, the Alliance seeks to encourage broader adoption of practices that strengthen accountability across industries.

Apple has agreed to pay $150,000 to settle a religious discrimination lawsuit

11 August 2026 at 12:08

Apple has agreed to pay $150,000 to settle a religious discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) last year, reports 9to5Mac.

The EEOC’s suit said a 16-year employee at the Reston, Virginia Apple Store, who worked as an Apple Genius consistently received positive performance reviews. However, beginning in August 2023, shortly after he converted to Judaism, he requested an accommodation for observing his Sabbath by not working Fridays and Saturdays.

The EEOC claims his new store manager rejected the request, claiming Apple’s scheduling policy now prohibited him from having both Friday and Saturday off. Fearing he would lose his job if he did not comply, he worked on the Sabbath, against his religious beliefs.

The EEOC also charged that around this same time, and after requesting his religious reasonable accommodation, Apple began disciplining him for allegedly violating its grooming policies, and shortly after he reminded his supervisor of an upcoming day off for religious reasons, Apple terminated him in January 2024, falsely claiming another violation of its grooming policy.

Such alleged conduct violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employers from failing to accommodate religious practices, absent an undue hardship, and from discriminating against employees based on their religion. Title VII also prohibits retaliation against an employee for complaining about or opposing discrimination. The EEOC filed suit (EEOC v. Apple, Inc., Civil Action No. 1:25-cv-1637) in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process.

From the settlement consent decree (via Law360):

Within thirty (30) days from the date of entry of the Decree, Defendant shall pay Tyler Steele a total of $150,000 in the amounts and forms specified below:

  • a. One payment will be $80,000, which constitutes back pay. This payment will be classified as wages and will be subject to withholdings and payroll taxes. l Defendant’s employer-side taxes and required employer contributions, including those under FICA, are separate from, and shall not be deducted from the back pay payment. Defendant shall report the back pay payment to Mr. Steele and the IRS via an IRS Form W-2, less all legal taxes and withholdings, as issued by Defendant to Mr. Steele.
  • b. The second payment will be $70,000, which constitutes compensatory damages and interest. Mr. Steele must provide to Defendant a W9 for Defendant to have an obligation to process this payment. This payment will be classified as non-wage damages, will not be subject to withholdings, and will be paid in one lump sum. Defendant shall report this non-wage payment to Mr. Steele and the IRS via an IRS Form 1099- MISC.

Under the terms of the settlement, per 9to5Mac, Apple has agreed to, among other things, provide training on religious discrimination and accommodation requirements to certain employees in the relevant Northern Virginia retail market, and report denials of religious accommodation requests and complaints of religious discrimination to the EEOC for the two-year duration of the consent decree.

Finally, the consent decree notes that the settlement does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing by Apple, and explicitly mentions that “Apple denied these allegations but agreed to resolve the lawsuit.”

Analyst: Apple scales back its hardware shipment plans to due DRAM shortages

10 August 2026 at 22:37

Apple is scaling back its hardware shipment plans in 2026 due to DRAM shortages, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says in an X post.

The tech giant plans its processor production at TSMC, a manufacturing partner, at least three months in advance, based on the amount of memory expected to be available, rather than having TSMC build large amounts of WIP (work in progress) ahead of time. This doesn’t mean TSMC never builds WIP in advance and holds it in inventory. But if the bottleneck is not at TSMC, building ahead provides little benefit, so Apple would have little reason to pay TSMC extra for it, according to Kuo.

In other words, tight memory supply is real. But the analyst says his understanding is that there has been no dramatic scenario in which TSMC first built up US$1 billion of WIP and then had to wait for memory to arrive before packaging could proceed. From his report: TSMC and Apple are both known for world-class execution, and such a dramatic development would be unusual given how closely the two companies coordinate their supply chains.

Finally, public information alone offers a useful way to assess this claim. TSMC said on its 2Q26 earnings call that the increase in inventory days was mainly due to the 2nm production ramp. However, that inventory cannot be directly attributed to Apple processor WIP for three reasons:

1. TSMC’s inventory days typically increase when a new advanced node enters its initial production ramp, so this is not unique to this year.

2. TSMC’s definition of inventory includes not only work-in-process, but also finished goods, raw materials, supplies, and spare parts.

3. Apple is not TSMC’s only 2nm customer this year. Other chip designers, including AMD and MediaTek, are also using 2nm.
