BloombergNEF’s South Africa Transition Factbook: Power-Market Reform and Private Investments Drive Energy Transition

7 September 2026 at 04:01
South Africa’s energy system is undergoing a major transition as the nation has moved beyond the worst of its power crisis, according to BloombergNEF's (BNEF) South Africa Transition Factbook 2026. Persistent load shedding has ended after coal power plants returned to service and private-sector participation increased.

States Put Data Centers on Pause: Analyst Reaction

3 September 2026 at 19:08
America’s data center boom is running into political resistance. Texas, New York and Pennsylvania are moving to slow or pause new projects amid concerns over electricity costs, infrastructure and local impacts. Texas alone accounts for around 20% of the US pipeline, meaning even short delays could cost developers billions. The pushback is increasingly bipartisan, as politicians respond to growing opposition from local communities and overloaded power grids. The result is new uncertainty for developers racing to secure electricity and bring projects online. So has America’s data center boom finally hit the brakes? And what happens next? On today’s show, Kamala Schelling is joined by BloombergNEF’s senior associate for North American policy, Derrick Flakoll, to discuss his recent notes “Texas’ Data Center Pause Could Cost Projects Billions” and “Pennsylvania’s Data Center Pushback Raises Pipeline Risk.”

Six Months In: The Iran War’s Global Impact

28 August 2026 at 08:13
ARTICLE On Feb. 28, the US and Israel launched missile strikes on Iran. Within days, Iran responded militarily, then economically by dramatically clogging the flow of oil, gas and other goods through the Strait of Hormuz. Given the interconnectedness of the global economy, the Iran war’s impacts have been felt in most corners of the…

Gas Is Letting Data Centers Grow Beyond the Grid

29 July 2026 at 19:28
Artificial intelligence is heating up the race to build data centers, and with BloombergNEF projecting 194 gigawatts of demand by 2035, the biggest challenge isn't computing power…. It's electricity. Faced with years-long grid connection delays, developers are turning to on-site gas generation to bring projects online faster, creating a rapidly expanding market for turbines, engines, fuel cells and battery storage. Choosing the right technology is a trade-off between speed, cost, efficiency and emissions. And while on-site generation is often seen as a temporary bridge, developers are also weighing what role those assets could play once permanent grid connections become available.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel Price Outlook: Leveling Off

16 July 2026 at 15:50
Prices of sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, are rising as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupts global fuel markets. Higher oil-product prices are increasing demand for biofuels, particularly for road transport, as governments seek to soften the impact of elevated fuel costs. Prices in Northwest Europe, the largest SAF consumption hub, are set to remain elevated over the next year according to BloombergNEF analysis, averaging $2,746 per metric ton.

Solar Set to Rule World’s Power Supply: Three Things to Know

8 July 2026 at 19:21
Solar is set to oust coal as the leading generator of electricity within six years, BloombergNEF finds in its latest energy transition outlook, despite a first ever slight dip in installations in 2026. “Solar is the cheapest source of power in many countries, and is proving the easiest and fastest to deploy,” said Jenny Chase, BNEF’s clean power specialist. “Its role in the global energy mix will be substantial, ushering in a new age where power is cheap whenever the sun shines.”

Energy Transition Impacts: Sector and Country Impacts from a Demand-Driven Model

25 June 2026 at 14:23
The global economy has reached the “messy middle” of the energy transition where renewable energy and electric vehicles are prevalent enough to affect the demand for fossil fuels without entirely displacing them. This introduces new tensions and volatilities to established industries from energy to transport and countries from Canada to Indonesia.

Competitiveness, Cost and Climate: Five Themes From the BNEF Summit Amsterdam

19 June 2026 at 13:27
The US energy landscape is changing quickly. Demand for artificial intelligence is driving up power demand while electric vehicle (EV) adoption slows down and enters a more complex phase. Together, these trends are reshaping how utilities, policymakers, financiers and automakers respond to emerging challenges in the energy sector.
