An abrupt shift towards a hotter and drier climate regime in the Western Eurasian Steppe

Nature Geoscience, Published online: 12 October 2026; doi:10.1038/s41561-026-02125-8

The Western Eurasian Steppe has undergone an abrupt and persistent transition to a hotter and drier summer climate that exceeds the range of natural variability, driven by external climate forcing and amplified by internal variability and land–atmosphere feedbacks, according to observations and Earth system model simulations.

Structures and inhibition of the Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever virus polymerase

Nature, Published online: 22 July 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10701-6

Structural studies of Crimean–Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) polymerase reveal the structural basis of CCHFV RNA synthesis and highlight druggable sites for designing both nucleoside antivirals and non-nucleoside antivirals.

Rapid changes in global river particulate organic carbon flux

Nature Geoscience, Published online: 29 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41561-026-02034-w

Satellite observations suggest an approximate 20% increase in global riverine particulate organic carbon export to the ocean over the past four decades, driven primarily by tropical deforestation and Arctic permafrost thaw.

A spinel-type FeCoNiCrRu high-entropy oxide is synthesized via an ultrafast thermal shock method. This catalyst overcomes the activity–stability trade-off in OER catalysis through the synergistic AEM–LOM dual-pathway mechanism.
