A hidden leak in solids

10 September 2026 at 01:00

Solid electrolytes have long been treated as materials that block electronic conduction while enabling fast lithium-ion transport. Two studies now show that residual electronic conductivity can drive self-discharge in solid-state batteries at open circuit, particularly in thin practical cells, and identify the limits needed to ensure long shelf life.

Co3O4 dry coating and post-annealing introduces a concentration–structure dual-gradient in high-Ni/low-Co single-crystal NCM. This architecture accelerates electron transport and stabilizes the surface, improving rate capability and durability.
