Competing mechanisms toughen bcc binary and medium-entropy alloys at 20 K

Nature, Published online: 14 October 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-11065-7

The mechanical properties of medium-entropy alloys at 20 K show a plateau in tensile yield strength and fracture toughness as a function of temperature, with no apparent ductile-to-brittle transition.

Built-In Electric Fields and Ir-Cl Motifs at Heterointerfaces Enable Selective and Durable Seawater Electrolysis

Energy Environ. Sci., 2026, Accepted Manuscript
DOI: 10.1039/D6EE02150F, Paper
Yaohai Cai, Di Liu, Dong Liu, Haoqiang Ai, Kai Liu, Xiaotian Wei, Yingwei Qi, Hui Pan, Lei Wang, Zhenbo Wang
Alkaline seawater electrolysis is fundamentally constrained by intrinsic trade-offs among oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, selectivity, and durability, arising from sluggish OER kinetics, parasitic chloride oxidation, and catalyst degradation. Here,...

Critical surface strain regime for stable and active epitaxial platinum oxygen reduction electrocatalysts

Nature Energy, Published online: 02 July 2026; doi:10.1038/s41560-026-02108-4

Manipulating surface strain in epitaxial transition metal films can enhance electrocatalytic activity, yet maintaining long-term performance is challenging due to irreversible strain relaxation. Here the authors identify a thickness-dependent critical strain in epitaxial Pt/Ir films that optimizes stability and activity for the oxygen reduction reaction.
