Water locked in 1-nanometer channels could enable safer energy storage

9 June 2026 at 21:40
Can pure water store electrical energy? A research team led by Dr. Vasily Artemov within the Cluster of Excellence "BlueMatβ€”Water-Driven Materials" at Hamburg University of Technology has now shown that it can. By confining water within nanometer-sized channels in clay minerals, the researchers created a supercapacitor capable of efficiently storing and transporting electrical charge.

How do jet fuel changes actually affect airfares?

9 June 2026 at 19:20
As concerns grow over global fuel supplies and the cost of flying, new research from the University of Adelaide shows the relationship between jet fuel prices and airfares is not as simple as passengers might think. The study found that different types of jet fuel price shocks have very different effects on Australian domestic airfares, with some shocks leading to higher ticket prices, some having little effect, and others pushing fares in different directions across fare classes.

Microbial fuel cells turn waste into electricity while cleaning water, review finds

9 June 2026 at 19:00
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which use microorganisms to generate electricity from organic waste, are emerging as a tool in the transition to cleaner energy systems and for the treatment of wastewater, according to a review of recent research published in the International Journal of Environment and Waste Management.

Self-testing quantum chip generates certified random numbers while checking its hardware in real time

9 June 2026 at 18:40
Randomness forms a crucial backbone of modern society, where every encryption key, secure transaction and digital signature depends on random numbers that no adversary can predict. But every random number generator ever deployed, classical or quantum, has asked its users to take the hardware's honesty on faith.

Monolayer WSeβ‚‚ unlocks high-performance p-type transistors that could change how future chips balance speed and power

9 June 2026 at 17:07
Transistors, small devices that can amplify or switch electrical signals, are central components of all modern computer chips and digital devices. There are two main types of transistors, known as n-type and p-type transistors.

'Technostress': Why many older people feel shut out by the digital world

9 June 2026 at 16:00
From personal health portals to AI assistants that draft emails, the digital age has simplified endless everyday tasks. But for many older New Zealanders, the rapid march of technology has helped build a wall rather than open doors. Navigating online forms, changing apps, disappearing face-to-face services, and the constant threat of scams can be daunting.

Artificial eyes could bring human-like sight to self-driving cars and robots

9 June 2026 at 10:00
Although self-driving cars and sophisticated robots use advanced cameras, computer algorithms and artificial intelligence to perceive their surroundings, these artificial eyes struggle to remain reliable in mixed lighting conditions. A team of researchers, co-led by an engineer from Penn State, has proposed a solution that mimics the mechanics of the human eye to adapt from bright to dark light in seconds.
