Mauritania reports Rift Valley fever case, Additional Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever case

21 October 2026 at 21:45

Rift Valley fever

The Mauritania Ministry of Health reports one confirmed case of Rift Valley fever (RVF) at the end of September in a 20-year-old male student from Tidra, Traza region.

The case presented at the hospital with hemorrhagic fever symptoms and was transferred to the Infectious Disease Department at the National Hospital Center.

Image/Sanjay Rao

On October 8, confirmation for RVF was performed using ELISA and PCR.

He was discharged last week.

Rift Valley Fever is mosquito-borne virus that is endemic in parts of Africa. It primarily infects animals like sheep, cattle and goats and it can have an economic impact on a community due to the loss of livestock.

Subscribe to Outbreak News TV on YouTube

Humans get infected through contact with infected animal blood or organs. Butchering and slaughtering of animals is a primary cause of transmission to humans. Certain occupations are at a higher risk of getting Rift Valley Fever like farmers, herders and veterinarians.

It can also be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites and the bites of blood-sucking flies.

Animal Viruses and Humans, a Narrow Divide: How Lethal Zoonotic Viruses Spill Over and Threaten Us

Most cases of Rift Valley Fever are mild and symptoms include fever, headaches and muscle pain. However, a small percentage of people can get serious disease which includes retinitis, encephalitis and a hemorrhagic fever. Fatalities happen in less than 1 percent of those infected.

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever

Health officials also reported a confirmed Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) also from the Traza region. This is the second CCHF case reported this year, and one death reported this year from the Traza region.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is a widespread disease caused by a tick-borne virus (Nairovirus) of the Bunyaviridae family. The CCHF virus causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks, with a case fatality rate of 10–40%.

Animals become infected by the bite of infected ticks and the virus remains in their bloodstream for about one week after infection, allowing the tick-animal-tick cycle to continue when another tick bites. Although a number of tick genera are capable of becoming infected with CCHF virus, ticks of the genus Hyalomma are the principal vector.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever 101

The CCHF virus is transmitted to people either by tick bites or through contact with infected animal blood or tissues during and immediately after slaughter. The majority of cases have occurred in people involved in the livestock industry, such as agricultural workers, slaughterhouse workers and veterinarians. Human-to-human transmission is possible.

Italy mosquito borne diseases: Dengue, chikungunya & West Nile virus

20 October 2026 at 22:42

In Italy, from January 1 to October 13, 2026, the national surveillance system coordinated by the ISS has recorded the following:

  • 357 confirmed cases of dengue: 70 of these are autochthonous, while all other cases are associated with travel abroad (52% with exposure in the Maldives), no deaths. The autochthonous cases are attributable to 5 local transmission outbreaks and 1 additional case which, at the current state of investigations, does not appear to be epidemiologically linked to other cases.

  • 30 confirmed cases of chikungunya: 1 of these cases has been identified as autochthonous, while all the others are associated with travel abroad (34% with exposure in the Seychelles), no deaths.

  • 4 cases of Zika virus: all associated with travel abroad, no deaths.

  • The weekly bulletin for West Nile virus records 770 confirmed cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in humans (754 in the previous report), of which 411 were neuroinvasive (including 5 imported cases: 1 from the Maldives, 1 from France, 1 from Belgium, 1 from Greece, and 1 from the Netherlands), 96 asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors, 257 cases of fever (1 imported case from Burkina Faso), 5 cases with other symptoms, and 1 asymptomatic case.

Of the confirmed cases, 61 deaths have been reported (including one imported case). The case fatality rate, calculated on the autochthonous neuroinvasive forms reported and confirmed so far, is 14.8% (18.8% in the same period in 2025). Last year, in the same period, 767 cases were reported with 69 deaths.

The number of provinces with proven WNV circulation across 20 regions has risen to 88.

  • In the same period, 18 cases of Usutu virus were reported (8 in Lombardy, 1 in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 1 in Emilia-Romagna, 2 in Marche, 3 in Lazio, 1 in Piedmont, and 2 in Veneto).

Peru reports rise in dengue, leptospirosis; health alert issued for increased cases due to El Niño

20 October 2026 at 22:21

The Peru Ministry of Health (MINSA) issued an epidemiological alert regarding the health risks associated with the 2026-2027 El Niño phenomenon, which could cause heavy rains, flooding, and difficulties in accessing safe water—conditions that favor the spread of various diseases in the country.

Image/Robert Herriman

The alert aims to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and the response capacity of public and private health facilities.

Epidemiological data highlight the importance of reinforcing preventive measures due to the increase in dengue fever, leptospirosis, diarrhea, malaria, and measles.

Subscribe to Outbreak News TV

As of epidemiological week 40 of 2026, the country had registered 71,256 cases of dengue fever, a 122% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Additionally, 1,159,363 episodes of acute diarrheal diseases (ADD) were reported, an 11.3% increase compared to the previous year. These diseases can worsen when rains and floods contaminate water sources or disrupt sanitation services.

Leptospirosis, with 13,235 reported cases, represents an 85.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This infection can be transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals, especially rodents. The alert also includes malaria and measles infections.

As part of the alert, MINSA is strengthening disease surveillance, early case detection, laboratory diagnostic capacity, and the availability of medicines, supplies, and trained personnel.

Prevention and control measures for mosquitoes, testing, vaccination promotion, and coordination with regional and local governments to protect at-risk communities will also be reinforced.

MINSA recommends the following measures for the public to reduce the risk of illness:

• Avoid mosquito breeding grounds: eliminate standing water in containers, cover water tanks, and keep living spaces clean.

• Drink safe water: use potable or disinfected water and keep it stored in clean, covered containers.

• Avoid contact with floodwaters: these can contain dangerous microorganisms. If contact is unavoidable, wear protective boots and gloves.

• Maintain good hygiene: wash your hands with safe water and soap, especially before preparing or eating food and after using the toilet.

• Complete vaccinations: Ensure that children and other family members are up to date on their vaccinations. In priority areas, administer the dengue vaccine doses recommended by healthcare professionals. (Ages 10-20: In Tumbes, Piura, Loreto, Ucayali, and Áncash. Ages 10-16: In Lambayeque, La Libertad, San Martín, and Metropolitan Lima (specifically in San Juan de Lurigancho, Huáscar area, at the Huáscar II and Huáscar XV health centers).

• Seek medical attention promptly: If you experience fever, persistent diarrhea, difficulty breathing, or other warning signs.

• Avoid self-medication.

Nigeria: Nearly one quarter of Lassa fever cases died

20 October 2026 at 15:54

From the beginning of the year through October 4, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reports 1,138 confirmed Lassa fever cases in 24 states. This is a 23 percent increase in cases compared to the same period in 2025.

Of these confirmed cases, 268 deaths were recorded. This is a 23.6 percent case fatality rate. It is also an 56 percent increase in deaths compared to the same period last year.

In total for 2026, 24 States have recorded at least one confirmed case across 119 Local Government Areas.

It’s not just COVID-19: Outbreaks of Lassa fever, plague and monkeypox

Eighty-eight percent (88%) of all confirmed Lassa fever cases were reported from 5 states (Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo and Benue) while twelve percent (12%) were reported from 19 states with confirmed Lassa fever cases. Of the 88% confirmed cases, Ondo reported 36%, Bauchi 23%, Taraba 12%, Edo 11% and Benue 6%.

54 cases were reported in healthcare workers.

Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness caused by the Lassa virus, an arenavirus endemic to parts of West Africa (including Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea).

The virus is carried by the Mastomys natalensis (multimammate rat), which sheds the virus in its urine and droppings.

People contract the virus by eating or breathing in dust contaminated with rat urine or droppings, touching contaminated objects, or getting the virus into open cuts.

It can spread between people through direct contact with infected bodily fluids (blood, urine, feces, or semen), most commonly in healthcare settings lacking proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Symptoms typically appear 1 to 3 weeks after infection.

  • Mild Symptoms (about 80% of cases): Slight fever, fatigue, weakness, and headache.

  • Severe Symptoms (about 20% of cases): High fever, vomiting, facial swelling, bleeding from body orifices or gums, chest/back/abdominal pain, respiratory distress, and shock.

Pakistan reports 7th polio case of the year, 1st case in Karachi in nearly 2 years

19 October 2026 at 22:36

Pakistani health officials have confirmed the seventh polio case of 2026 for Pakistan from Karachi East District in Sindh.

The affected child is a six-month-old male from Union Council Jamali Colony of Karachi East.

The last case from Karachi was reported in December 2024.

Of this year’s 7 reported cases, five are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (four from southern KP alone) and two are from Sindh.

Despite an overall decline in wild poliovirus transmission, Karachi has continued to report environmental detections throughout the year, indicating that ongoing transmission remains a real threat for children.

Subscribe to Outbreak News TV on YouTube

In 2026, Pakistan has already implemented four large-scale polio campaigns, protecting more than 45 million children multiple times, alongside smaller targeted oral and injectable vaccination campaigns in high-risk areas. In September, a subnational campaign protected over 29.3 million children across the country, while the next vaccination round is scheduled from November 2-8 to protect nearly 24 million in 97 districts, including all districts of Karachi.

Thanks to polio vaccines—which are safe and effective—Pakistan has reduced polio cases by 99.8 percent, from an estimated 20,000 cases in the early 1990s to 31 in 2025, and 7 so far this year.

Bangladesh battles massive outbreaks of dengue and measles

18 October 2026 at 23:42

Dengue fever

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Dhaka, at least six dengue patients died and 2,088 others were hospitalised in the past 24 hours, bringing the total cases and deaths to 112,400 and 348, respectively.

September has been the deadliest month of the year so far, logging 43,774 hospital admissions and 148 deaths.

Significant outbreaks are hitting the Dhaka area and the Chattogram, Khulna, and Barishal divisions due to high population density and inadequate waste management.

Typically a monsoon-season illness (June to September), dengue transmission in Bangladesh is increasingly shifting and extending into late autumn due to unseasonal rains and climate shifts.

Currently, 6,026 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals across the country.

Bangladesh’s record dengue fever season in 2023 with Dr. Md Rafiul Hasan

Measles

The large measles outbreak in Bangladesh has yet to be contained. Sonce mid-March, the country reported 203,000 suspected measles cases, including 23,000 confirmed cases have been reported.

At least 1,196 people have died, with children under five accounting for 94% of reported deaths.

National routine immunization coverage dropped below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity—falling to about 86% in 2025.

The decline was driven by political instability, administrative overhauls, healthcare disruptions following the end of long-standing political leadership in 2024, and funding challenges.

Intensified nationwide campaigns have been deployed to reach millions of unimmunized children, though overwhelmed hospitals and persistent transmission continue to challenge containment.
