Sequential reading of a stepwise-shortened peptide immobilized on nanopore

Nature, Published online: 29 July 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10881-1

A nanopore-based ‘chop and measure’ method sequences peptides at single-amino-acid resolution by using enzymatic digestion to progressively shorten the N terminus one residue at a time, together with repetitive N-terminus re-reading.

Semiconducting and magnetic lanthanide MXenes from intercalated halides

Nature, Published online: 22 July 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10802-2

A bottom-up synthesis strategy creates lanthanide MXenes (Ln2CT2) that combine semiconducting behaviour with ferromagnetism, offering a promising new class of two-dimensional materials for spintronic applications.

Efficient and precise programmable DNA knock-in without double-strand breaks

Nature, Published online: 22 July 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10819-7

Kilobase-scale nickase-targeting (KNIT) editing enables single-nick-based DNA insertion across genomic loci and cell types, supporting insertion of DNA fragments exceeding 10 kb, with high efficiency and minimal unwanted off-target effects.

Mitigation of hydrogen crossover in liquid alkaline water electrolysers using gas recombination catalysts

Nature Energy, Published online: 26 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41560-026-02094-7

Alkaline water electrolysers are being optimized for higher performance, but measures such as advanced electrodes or thinner separators can increase hydrogen crossover and safety risks. Here the authors analyse crossover behaviour and show that a gas recombination catalyst cuts crossover by 95% without affecting electrolyser performance.

Ontong Java Plateau formed by a thermochemical mantle plume

Nature Geoscience, Published online: 11 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41561-026-02019-9

Magmatism induced by a mantle plume bearing a relatively high proportion of dense fusible mantle material may have formed the Ontong Java Plateau, the largest extant oceanic plateau, according to thermodynamic modelling.

Ambient-pressure conversion of plastic waste to jet fuel cycloalkanes by tandem hydropyrolysis and vapour-phase hydrogenation

Nature Energy, Published online: 27 May 2026; doi:10.1038/s41560-026-02078-7

Converting plastic waste into jet fuel could support aviation decarbonization, but current approaches are limited by high-pressure requirements and low efficiency. Here the authors present a tandem hydropyrolysis and vapour-phase hydrogenation strategy that uses a Ru/Co-Al oxide catalyst, achieving promising rates and yields at low pressures.

Stable tin–lead perovskite inks for efficient all-perovskite tandems

Nature Energy, Published online: 26 May 2026; doi:10.1038/s41560-026-02077-8

Low-bandgap tin–lead perovskites can boost solar cell efficiency but degrade quickly due to tin oxidation. Here the authors add proton-scavenging additives that stabilize inks for over 300 days, enabling 24.06% single cells and 29.56% certified tandem efficiency.
